The 5 cylinder petrol engine fitted to many Volvo from the early 90s to the late noughties was a fantastic engine. It came as a 2.0, 2.3, and a 2.4 with varying power outputs. But this engine can be ruined by a snapping Timing or Cam Belt. The engine was fitted to many cars such as 850, S70, S60, V70, XC70, S80, XC90 and XC60 among many variants. If you’ve recently bought your car like I have and you’re not entirely sure of the belt history, this video will hopefully demonstrate how easy it is to check the belt yourself at home and save paying for investigative work with a mechanic. Most mechanics (especially if you don’t know them) will charge a minimum of half an hour to do this check, but with a few simple tools, you can do this at home in under ten minutes. My car is a V70 from 2000, fitted with a 2.4 T engine. Now I’ve checked the built, I’m confident that in addition to Volvo having replaced the belt at 90000 miles, it’s had a second belt fitted since. The belt to me appears in good condition and I’m happy it will serve the engine well for the foreseeable future. If I was to keep the car I’d probably replace the belt within the next two years just to be sure, but for now I’m happy with what I’ve seen. I hope you find this video useful. As I type this (July 2021), the car is currently for sale, and here is a link to my video demonstrating the car and how it drives.
I must point out, I’m not a trained mechanic - I’m just someone who has spent a number of years around cars and have picked up a trick or tip here and there. If my knowledge helps you, then I’m happy to be of assistance. This job really is quite simple. If I can do it, anyone can.

Changing the belt is fairly straight forward, it’s moving the steering wheel to the left side that’s more involved

Belt is shiny and old, The print is very faded, Alot of OEM belts are the Gates Power Grip model, Most likely that is the OEM Volvo belt changed at 90k.

m8 its a good vid does what it says on the labe,l dont let all the knockers stop you from doing more in future. You showed everyone exactly how to make there own mind up if they need/want to change there cambelt? .you checked yours and decided you wanted to leave it awhle longer before changing ,.thats fine. Some people need to figure it was obviouse you wasnt asking for a fooking opinon on whether it needed changing or not .,What really pisses me off is these sorts of peeps get to vote.geeez

FYI it's not normally the belt that fails on these cars, it's usually the pulley, tensioner or water pump. Either one of these failing will cause the belt to come off.

Yes, true, but my video is meant to show how easy it is for a novice to check the condition of their cars belt to eliminate any doubt. As with your points, prevention is always better than cure 👍

Is it bad to assume that if the belt was done they took the time to change the pulley, tensioner and water pump? If I remember right, most of the labor is in getting it apart...and while you're in there it's always a good idea to change everything you can. Maybe a bad assumption but thought I'd ask.
@johno9507

@@mrbitstream The belt, pulley and tensioner usually come together in a kit, the water pump is usually sold separately, so I wouldn't assume they changed the pump.

Belt looks old and worn, the writing is barely visible etc. If you don't know exactly when the belt was replaced you should replace it ASAP including all the neccesary pulleys, the tensioner and the water pump. Visually inspecting the timing belt doesn't give you any guarantees!

Yep, looks just like the belt I just took out of my wife's car which was 7 years old and had done almost 100k km. If I did not know for sure when the belt was done I would replace immediately to be honest.
