As always, thanks for the excellent and robust review Thomas!👍. Sorry if someone else has already commented on this, but my man Thomas, the T6 is a Kompressor/supercharger with added turbo, so a “superturbo” engine, thus the supercharger whine at lower RPM’s. The supercharger engages from start, then relays to the turbo just after 3K RPM’s. Add the Polestar Optimization software, to really bring this engine and transmission to life! I just added it to my V90 T6 R-Design, and am very impressed with the much improved engine midrange and higher RPM power with faster upshifts and downshifts. The engine seems more refined, has less distasteful growling over 2,500 RPM’s, with this Polestar flash.

As aways a great review of a great car in the German Autumn. Love those country roads. It was always a joy to drive in the area near Idstein. But I am waiting for the first Volvo fully electric. Or Renault should do a Scenic/ Espace electric version with a 64kWh battery pack.
@mgammeren5 жыл бұрын
@Banksters Paradise That depends on what battery they use 40kWh or 60 or.. When Volkswagen can build a decent electric car for around 30k Euro. That would be the Neo with 2 or 3 different trim levels and battery packs for long range and one for around 300km. That smallest one will be enough for 95% of the use case for people. With the fast chargers around Europe you will be able to do long distance trips as well with a bit of planning and not loose a lot of time. It doesn't have to bee twice as expensive. And I know Volvo is a premium brand. Audi has it's E-tron, although it is expensive, beneath the price of the Model X. And yes the E-tron has a shorter range than the Model X it is sufficient for again 95% of the use case and far more luxury compared to the Tesla.

Do you know in the USA this is a very hard car to find on the streets? And when you do see one, they are stunning. Volvo wagons used to be very popular. Now Volvo's xc90, xc60 SUVs are all over but not so much s90 or s60 or v90 or v60. I feel the sedans and wagons are so more desirable and stylish. Volvo wants to go in a Tesla direction but there's also Polestar. Whatever way they go, they're a nice Euro alternative in their own space.

It's already no longer offered with the t6 supercharger anymore. Not even the Wikipedia page has had time to respond to the update yet. I learned while trying to order one off the Volvo website. They tried to tell me the t6 doesn't even exist. I said "huh, yes it does" and sent them a number of v60 t6 videos including yours. What kind of auto manufacturer goes through the trouble of engineering a car with an engine they only intend to give it for ONE YEAR? (Apparently, the answer is Volvo.)

what would be your favorite estate in mid-price segment? comfort and driving position in focus...
It's a nice car, but as all Volvo's has a huge problem, and that is the price. I don't know about every country in Europe, but where I am Volvo's are insanely expensive. This V60 T6 Inscription without any extra's starts at 64000€ without emissions taxes...so almost 70k € or about 80k USD, and then actually more if you pick any extra equipment, and the extras are really expensive. Like if you want folding electric mirrors on the Inscription model you pay 500€, if you want active cruise control 1000€, if you want an electric glass sunroof almost 2k €, 360 degree parking camera is almost 1k €, heads up display almost 1k €, electrically adjusted front seats over 1k €, even the active LED headlights are 600€ and active suspension is like 800€. So when you pay for all these options that the competition usually has standard in higher trim levels, you can EASILY push the price of the V60 upwards of 80k €, which is just theft for a car in the mid segment, I mean damn you can buy fully equipped S4's or C43 AMG's for that. That means it's actually like 20k € more expensive than the A4 or 3 series with similar power and level of equipment, and costs pretty much the same as a BMW 540i which is a car from a segment above, bigger engine, more power, more equipment, more luxury, etc. Volvo would do much better on the market if they priced their cars realistically, and not 20-30% above it. This especially becomes a problem when you realize that the Volvo cars aren't quite as good as the other premium competitors in some areas. They don't have such a wide engine selection, all are 4 cylinders, they consume more fuel than competitors, their gearboxes aren't working quite as fine, they aren't quite as silent and refined inside, don't handle or drive quite as fine and at the same time aren't really more comfortable to make up for it, the infotainment systems aren't quite as good, etc. I drove the D4 V60 and several S90/V90 variants and they just aren't as polished as the other premium competition. I mean I don't know who would talk me into buying a Volvo V/S60 instead of an Alfa Giulia, A4, C class or a brand new 3 series which is vastly superior in most important aspects of a car and costs far less money. Even Jaguar XE, Infinity Q50 or Lexus IS as rare cars in Europe have far more fair pricing and are better value. So you're supposed to pay 20-30% more for a car that is like 10% worse in most areas than the competitors...and that is why Volvo does so badly and why they sell such a small amount of cars compared to other premium car makers. It's a shame that they chose this pricing position, higher than other premium cars, instead of undercutting them a little bit and attracting more buyers. It's just not worth paying that much more money simply to have a car that looks different or is more stylish, at least for most people.

In sweden a nearly full specced v60 costs right under 50k
@johncollymore16976 жыл бұрын
Yes, I tend to agree. Pricey, and extras are numerous & pricey. I'm not sure which country you refer to, but on the UK online configurator, a full spec New XC60 is £53k. A full-spec every-extra Tiguan SEL SWB with pale interior is £40k. I've driven both and the XC60 is just slightly classier inside, but not £10k more. And the Tiguan has the same equipment and with DCC rides just as calmly and quietly. Luckily, there is a choice; if you fancy a Volvo and you've got the money, you buy a Volvo! Great Review Thomas, many thanks for all the information and your great work.

Totally agree. The only point worth adding is that in many geographies Volvo dealers apply significant discounts... Especially on those lines they realize are not selling (see v90/s90).
@gperpetuo6 жыл бұрын
In Portugal a V60 D4 almost full extras is 60k and we have huge taxes applied to cars. Volvo always apply discounts... Personally, I preferred the Volvo in almost every single aspect when compared with Audi/Mercedes/BMW. Audi are just plain boring to me. BMW need to refresh their looks also... it is getting outdated for my taste. Mercedes exteriors are ok in general but interiors are also a no go to me. Really hate how some brands install the displays... "lower grade" cars are having them much better integrated in the car. Alfa... well I quite like them... what I really don't like is their build quality and materials quality... my dad's Alfa is quite in worse shape then my much older and humble Seat!! Since new it has always been giving him some kind of headache... I simply cannot risk my money on them... Volvo handling was very good. Played with it in very winding roads and it handled everything wonderfully. Was fun. Steering was quite responsive with the 19'' wheels, wonderful feedback from road surface and I felt quite connected with the car... I was expecting much worse feedback from it after watching all Autogefühl reviews on almost all new generation Volvo's. Noise levels in highway were very good... did not feel the competitors 10% better then it. Feel that one is better in "A" but worse in "B", another is better in "B and C" but much worse in "A". It's always a matter of compromise whatever the brand/car we choose and it is always a matter of what fits better to our style/likes/etc...

Amongst all the V60s I find the T4 (190PS) and in places the T5 (245PS) the best choice for petrol engines as they come with amazing economy numbers (therefore cheap in taxes), have enough power for everyday driving and have a decent fuel consumption. The T6 (305PS) is rather unlogical as it is (in comparisson) way to expensive to buy, ensure and tax for the little more you get in terms of power and the MASSIVE step up in consumption whereas the T4 is almost on Diesel-Level. As in the segment even the T4 has more power than a 320i/320d my thought is you don't need much above that. Got to admit though the 2016-2018 T6 Polestar would be my "first look dream estate". Never forget to mention: A Volvo, no matter how well equipped is WAY cheaper to ensure and in taxes than a Merc/Audi/BMW from the segment. I owned a BMW F30 M-Performance and a 320d x-Drive before and ensurance alone is double the price of a similar or more powerful, better equipped Volvo. Not to mention Volvos engines also also cheaper in taxes as they are small capacity and CO2 numbers are WAY below german cars. It doesn't matter which V60 or V90 you choose, at least in Germany ALL of them are cheaper than ANY german estate from the big three. Currently I am thinking about getting a new Estate (my first ever) but I'm unsure about which one. My heart is split between the V60 (old&new), the Subaru Levorg (pre-2019) and the KIA Pro'Ceed GT. Have read some comments about Volvo's fake exhaust system ..... quite mildly compared to the Germans, such as VW diesel figures for example.

You should give Volvo more cred for not following German craptastic fake exhausts. I don't think Volvo has fake exhausts on any model?
@autogefuehl6 жыл бұрын
? Did you see the rear part? :)
@christianm15336 жыл бұрын
@@autogefuehl: ? Rear part? Last part of the movie? Rear part of the car @3.10? It is a real exhaust? Fake exhaust are plugged trims. Exhaust is usually situated underneath the car instead. This is not fake. This is how exhaust trims usually look. Almost no one has real exhausts that large on normal cars.
@autogefuehl6 жыл бұрын
yeah, those are fake exhaust tips just like so many other manufacturers
@petejr75836 жыл бұрын
Autogefühl actually my friend, the Volvo’s are not physically connected to the tips, but are still within tip, so the exhaust gases do flow from those tips. Audi and Merc are using plugged inserts into the bumper, with the actual pipes hidden, bending down to the road - very low rent tacky.

I have this comment added elsewhere but will repeated it here too. Ok. So question from a Volvo lover (former....not yet but ...): what is so luxurious in this Volvo (and others from so called “premium” segment ? Be specific please. It is powerful, no doubts. Nothing really exceptional but at least adequate. At the same time it is heavy drinker! Downsizing only works if executed reasonably (e.g. T5 engine), no longer the case here. They went too far and it does consumes too much fuel! Beyond that, what is really premium? Be objective. Are rear seats different than on typical car of this size? No! Are rear seats heated? Yes, if you pay premium. You need to pay just half of that on a non-premium car, it is fact. Are rear sears adjustable? No, not available.....as oppose to some non-premium cars e.g. Subaru Outback. Are rear seats headrest adjustable? No? Are rear seats shade as available like on some non-premium cars? No! Not even an option! Are front seats settings memorized? Yes!.....like on so many non-premium cars...except that only two positions are now stored...as opposed to three positions on all older Volvo’s. ......and several non-premium brands. Front seats head rest adjustable? No, not at all. So what is premium then? Noise level...guess what..it is not . Measure it with your cell phone. Pretty good? Yes! Premium and exceptional? No! Ergonomic solutions? Lights control so excellent on legacy Volvo’s with separate control panel included? No! Now in the steering wheel column levers... crap like on many non-premium cars.....poor trend in the industry. Touch screen for every car function.....try it yourself and find out... how distracting it is ( yes there are worse cars like Audi with its tons of screen approach). Let me stop now. Negative attitude? Not really...realistic! Your turn please. Constructive comments are welcome.....aggressive ones not so much. Thanks!.
@autogefuehl6 жыл бұрын
Yeah good points, a lot of the premium is the price...

Autogefühl Thanks Thomas! Would be interesting to see you making such comparative analysis between several cars from these different segments. You are influential so if car manufacturers see it...who knows, chances are that it would work like motivation for improvements. Cheers!

I bought a V60 inscription (51621 EUR) , im swedsih so ofcourse i will support the national make! But jesus, even i have my patriotic limits.. the problems i had with my v60 is insane... been to the shop 11 times... in 4 months, things like the mesh for the panorama fell down...then it woulden´t close...the trunklid would refuse to shut it self....it would say... check for obstacles... i had nothing in the trunk.... had it for 2 days... Then it would refuse to loch the doors..... 3 times in the shop....at last they changed the door electronic module... it was under warranty but the cost else would had been 1257€.... then winter came.... the door would freeze so you can not close it-... it would just bounce....visited the shop... they changes the lock.... 4 months old car could continue for ever... they bought it back after 6 months..... and have bought another brand! And so far.... noproblems.

thanks for the report. Thats horrible. What did you go for now?

@@autogefuehl Mabye in the future i will give try volvo again. I had han XC60 back in 2014 it was totaly ok. But will never go back to V60. I bought i Audi RS4 instead. Smaller but i was hooked on the RS after they made me try it, after thinking of an S4 and S6... only negative so far is the cost of the insurance... but that i cant blame on the car .)

It is amazing like different reviewers evaluate the drive and the steering! Many of them still repeats the stereotype about the Volvo unresponsive characteristic. Some prize this (technically advanced) car steering feel ! Thomas called it artificial.....where is the truth? Nowhere! It just different than many but this car is really agile to drive and performs well in cornering! Anything else, your perceptions are just subjective.

They've become way too expensive compared to when they weren't bought out by the Chinese. They cost the same as their german rivals, if not more...
