Propshaft already removed during fault finding, vibration at speed, could also be felt around roundabouts or significant right turns at speeds of 30mph or more.
I didn't get the driveshaft out at all, I've removed many over the years, this one was particulary seized in, I had very little ground clearance, so decided to leave it there for now, plus the fault has been improved considerably since this re-grease. As a temporary repair, and proving the source of the problem - a success.

For those of you here in the U.S., I went to Sears & got a 3/8" steel cold chisel with a really short taper. Lightly tap it between the shaft end & the transmission casing. Try to keep the chisel as straight as possible. The circlip should eventually pop loose.

Great video. I Like your technique. Volvo pack the inner CV with a clay coloured oozy grease from the factory. It is very unlike the black grease commonly found on inner CVs. Be careful with aftermarket axles as they're rarely filled with a quality axle grease and are usually underfilled due to being manufactured you know where!!

Changing the wheel hub assembly & replacing the outer CV boot on my '99 Volvo V70 First of all on older cars expect a fight with the rusty misshapen bolts. I used PB blaster & a small propane torch but ONLY where the torch wouldn't harm rubber hoses & other boots etc. I took off about a dozen nuts & bolts & only stripped one bolt...not too bad. I tried to remove only a few components to do this job, ended up removing everything which allowed better access to inner axle that inserts into the gear box/transmission box. It was a bitch trying to pop the end out of a the gear box! I used a Carpenter's flat bar/pry bar. Put the short end up in between the gear box & axle & gently hit the long end with a rubber mallet ( I think any hammer will do just tap it gently & consistently) & it finally popped out. I'll change the outer boot & slide it back into the gear box hoping to get it properly in place. Wish me luck!

Very nice. No need to remove brake calipers, steering rack or lower ball joint.

Have you tried a slide hammer with a little crowsfoot behind the inboard joint cup? That's what I'm leaning towards as I am also having the same issue on my 02 v70

Did you know about the cir-clip that holds the inner splines into the transaxle? I've heard rotating the axle and trying it at different points until the cir-clip is at the right orientation sometimes does the trick. The passenger side has no clip to worry about, it just slides out.

Did the re-lube work out for you? I noticed that you haven't posted a follow-up video. Regards

proper method to pull left side axle is slide hammer with cv axle puller attachment, not prybars

Hi, yes the grease took about 100 miles to make a real difference, ultimately, it really needs a joint/shaft, but the vibration is gone (at least for now) unless I'm fully loaded plus a trailer. If I ever get round to replacing this, I'll upload another vid, cheers.

Aha. I was really hoping to see how the inner came out of the gearbox. Is there a circlip in there does anyone know? Mine is very tight and the Haynes manual says nothing as usual.

Yes, there is definitely a pesky circlip in there. Unfortunately what happens with this particular vintage is that the splines often rust in place so you can't even get any movement to shift the circlip. I've seen a few really interesting solutions to this: my favorite was to drill two holes on either side of the empty CV housing and then run a large bolt through. They you attach a chain in the middle and use a slide hammer to pound it out.

Thanks for replying. I'd forgotten about coming back to this as I managed to do it the next day by tying a slip knot of wire around the protective cowl type thing on the shafy and using a slide hammer I just gave it a good pull. It came off super easy. So much so that I ended up on the floor after pre-empting a big fight lol.

SuperBC10 - nice. I was wondering how well that technique worked. Can you explain further how you wrapped it?
@SuperBC10

Yes, I had a piece of wire about 2ft long and around 10mm in diameter. I put 2 small loops at each end then wrapped one end around the inner driveshaft as far as I could get to the gearbox in a loose knot. I gave it a pull to tighten the wire. I then inserted the other loop of the wire into my slide hammer with one of the bolts that came with the hammer. Pulled it all tight then gave it a good whack , basically pulling it towards me - try a couple of different angles if it doesn't come straight off . But it was surprisingly easy. The circlip is just a thin ring really that goes in a little groove at the end of the shaft. It wasn't half as frightening as I thought lol.
