So if you're putting an additional 90 degree turn on the strut bolts following a torque spec, that implies these are 'torque to yield' bolts that must be replaced every time and never reused. Once a bolt reaches its yield point it becomes strain hardened and can snap if it gets strained a second time.

HI 1A Auto great video! I am doing my axle on my 2006 XC90 very similar to the video. I got the new axle in but now I cannot seem to get my old strut back in the same position?? it seems like the strut need to be compressed? Any thoughts ? Thank you!

I would like to replace the Left Rear CV shaft of a 2015.5 Volvo XC70 T6 AWD. Can I use this video as a reference? I have a left rear ABS tone wheel problem and I also discovered that the car, which I bought used in 2019, had an XC60 Left Rear CV shaft that doesn't seem to be compatible with the XC70--at least according to the part #'s. I was surprised to find that it had a relatively new looking shaft with labels still attached and looking new--maybe that's why I have a problem.

At 13:50, you can put a punch in the rotor slot and brace against the caliper bracket to keep the axle from turning while tightening the axle bolt instead of using a pry bar and the wheel mounting stud tools
@1AAuto3 жыл бұрын
+dave1135 Thanks for the tip!
@johno95072 жыл бұрын
I wouldn't do that on the S60R/V70R as there is no separate bracket and the calipers are painted.

Nice trick, beats putting a breaker bar against wheel stud threads.

Incomplete instructions that may lead to damage to the car or make the job much harder. From my own experience doing the job on an XC70 in my garage: - I totally agree with Mathew Kuhl: support the knuckle or remove the ABS Sensor and brake pad assembly! The wire and brake fluid line were stretched to the max on my car. I removed them. - Remove the Sway Bar Link or you will really fight the strut spring to put everything back. I could not push the wheel assembly back in before doing that. If you have a wide C-Clamp, put it on the top end of the wheel hub assembly and strut shaft and push them together by closing the clamp. Much easier than just fighting it while trying to push the bolts back in at the same time. - Clean the rubber seal protecting the wheel hub ball bearing and use high grade Silicone Grease to coat it. - Do the same to the seal on the transmission end of the CV Shaft. - If just using jack stands like I did, use one of them to support the old shaft while removing the Carrier Bearing Cap. - When comparing the CV Shafts, keep in mind that the new one might be retracted at the inner boot and may look shorter than the old one. - If you have a hydraulic jack, use it to push the knuckle back up until the mounting hole for the Sway Bar Link on the strut lines up with the screw on the link. That makes for a very easy installation.

With three wheels on the ground, you have to detach the sway bar link. With both fronts off the ground, you can get away with leaving it attached

How do you find the torque specifications? And how can you get to it without a digital torque?
@jorgetello39612 жыл бұрын
You would need a torque wrench if you want to do it right. There's no good trick to get around it outside of not caring, luckily you should be able to rent one from an auto parts store for cheap.

Thanks for the video. The parts look great. But the $64K question: what do you do if the axle doesn't seat into the transmission? In this video it does, but on mine, it's stopping a shy 1/8th of an inch short. I don't see any safe way to persuade it. What happens next?
@1AAuto3 жыл бұрын

Are you sure you bought the right axle? The automatic and manual axles are very very similar but not interchangeable. The difference is in the end that goes into the transmission, there is a small lip where the oil seals rub on the axle.
@benjaminstewart43322 жыл бұрын
Late lol but they have different splines for a 4 speed and a 5 speed so you need to determine your transmission

I replaced my passenger axel a week ago but there is still rattling in the tire. What can be the problem?
@CRA1G963 жыл бұрын
Could be a number of things, top mount, ball joint, track rod end, drop link, anti roll bar, I’d look into all of them, if currently got a rattle too, everything is fine so,going along the lines if top mount

Great video - but - the knuckle torque spec was 77 ft-lb, plus an additional 90 degrees. But you made no attempt to do 1/4 turn extra but instead tightened to 90 foot pounds total. Was this just a happy coincidence, or a mistake?
@BobC7772 жыл бұрын
@Phil McArdle - you are incorrect. After torquing to 77 ft-lbs Sue's fancy torque wrench was set to 90° (not 90 ft-lb). It calculates when 90° has taken place and beeps. 11:43 She did it right.
