I can now see why you have a watch with numbers that shows what the big hand means. Steven Spielberg can sleep easy too. Thankyou for taking the time and trouble to post, for the duration though, I had anticipated more guts and gore of the workings.

Not everybody is such a quick learner like you! ;) But I will do my best to make the videos as informative as possible.

polishing with a rag is not going to repair or clean thelatch mechanism...give me a break !!!

That's correct! But lubrication does solve a lot of problems... As you don't want dirt into your lubricated area you have to clean it first. Maybe you would replace it with a new mechanism, but for me it now operates very smooth again for the last year or so.

I removed the latch mechanism (2x10mm bolts) disconnected the cables and sprayed some brake cleaner into the parts where it gets clogged with dry grease. After cleaning I sprayed it with a liberal dose of WD40. There's a small hole in the casing which may even be there for this purpose, so I poked some wire into it to make sure it was clear, and then used the WD40 straw to spray some into the mechanism. Then operated the mechanism using a screwdriver shaft to emulate the steel locking hoop on the underside of the bonnet and opened and closed it a few times, spraying more WD40 in open and closed positions. Refitted and it works as it should. I suspect the problem is caused by a build up of dried grease (the white stuff that they spray on a service time, they just spray fresh grease onto the old dirty stuff and it just coagulates).

Possibly not. Depends on the latche's condition. Of course a new one would be best, but they're far from cheap.
