Hey Peter , If you experience any vibration while driving this is probably due to a slightly wrong configuration of the driveshaft. Like it is right now it will vibrate if the middle joint has any sort of angle . U joints don't transmit a continuous motion (like a CV) , they rather transmit a elliptical movement so so say and need a second u joint operating in the exact opposite angle to cancel this out . So either you need all CVs or two ujoints in the correct phasing and angle . There is a great demonstration video on yt if you search for "driveshaft angle and phasing " U-joint or CV is determined by the product of rpm x angle which can't be over like 12000 for a CV or it will burn up .
@PeterBjorck Жыл бұрын
Thank you so much for your input! You are absolutely correct! I have some vibrations. We just took what parts i had lying around. But i think i will install a u-joint in the back as well! Great youtube video there explaining the phenomena!

@@PeterBjorck happy to hear back from you . I totally understand that you had to make due with whatever was available. This was not meant as criticism. I just spent about 2 years to understand the dynamics of driveshafts because I was dealing with retrofitted 4x4 systems on old mercedes vans that had vibrations to the moon and back . Now I realize how complex driveshafts are and try to help everyone with them because almost nobody understands how they work - not even the local driveshaft shops . That being said - they are super hard to figure out because they behave quite outlandish. It is admirable how you power through your hardships and that you talk about them openly. I wish you all the necessary strength to keep on doing what you love . Greetings from Germany

You just made the best sounding front engined V10 😎, I'm seriously fucking impressed Peter, you truly are a underrated engineer!I don't know weather you read my comment on your first drive video at the start of StreetWeek when you asked if any ideas about improving exhaust sound... I'm commenting half way through this video and trying to guess what you did (all I can think now is you modified a Lambo stock exhaust muffler to fit near the Volvo or replicated the resonation in a custom made muffler) Now the Volvorghini sound is honestly like an LFA & Lambo exhaust note and the LFA is not an exhaust note as I said before as in videos its 95% times a microphone inside the cabin recording the Yamaha acoustics system that is amplified through the firewall into the cabin ... The large displacement & exotic car community needs a product that works !!! I am certain that if every shit sounding V10/12 owner gets to hear the Volvoghini, they will be interested in your product as every aftermarket 10-20 US grand exhaust for M5 V10, RS8 or Dodge Viper or Euro V12s don't sound even half as good as the Volvoghini, infact it souds way better than the Huracan to my musician ears ... R8s also piss weak sound. So tell me when and I'm coming to Sweden hehe, we can show Akrapovic they are mediocre!

Sounds great Peter. There's no doubt the length has a huge impact on the sound. I believe the distinct sound of the WRX boxer engine is due to unequal length primaries. I've heard them when they've had an equal length aftermarket system installed and they sound much more like a normal 4 cylinder.

Far from an expert on exhausts, but what I've heard that to find the correct spot for the X-joint you first run it with same length dual pipes all the way back and use a heat camera or sensor to find a hot-spot close to where the joint should be. This is where the pressure is high and you'll want the X-joint. Probably not for sound but for low back pressure, but probably won't hurt for the sound either. Most certainly more ppl here have more knowledge about this and could fill in the details or correct me. Love the mix of exotic engines, pro-grade mechanics with biltema budget, half failing components elsewhere.

The cross section on the exhaust from my experience (us v8) helps alot with torque, it usually requires adjustments on the fuelmix afterwards, in your case mapping. As for sound it usually kills sound a bit as it evens out the ignitions, but with your engine being more cylinders, and higher rew maybe none of this applies. Great update Peter!

Oh, tips for good exhaust sound? Yeah, having everything be equal length is a big factor, particularly for even firing engines. And you definitely want to blend the banks together as well. A Y pipe that you have is actually better for performance AND sound as long as the single section matches the flow potential of the duals before it. Otherwise, the next best one for sound and power is a very smoothly merged double X pipe with roughly 1/3 the diameter cut off in order to merge them. (MUCH more info coming in an edit.) Anyway, to do the Y-pipe correctly, you need the diameter of the single to be 1.414x the diameter of the duals to exactly match the flow area, or at least 1.33x to get "close enough." Some examples of this are dual 2.5 into single 3.5 (good for about 560 crank HP), and dual 3 into single 4.25 (good for about 800 crank hp). For your application, the dual 2.5 into single 3.5 is probably enough, but if you want to leave room for supercharging you can go dual 2.75 into single 3.75. Also to ballpark the difference between wheel and crank HP, you start by multiplying your whp by 1.1x if it's transverse 2wd manual, and then for every "feature" of the drivetrain difference, you add 0.05x. So if it's transverse auto 2wd it's 1.15 to get crank hp. Longitudinal manual 2wd is also 1.15x. AWD manual makes it 1.2x, 2wd auto is also 1.2x, and the worst one is awd auto at 1.25x roughly speaking. Another important factor for good sound is keeping at least ONE cat per bank on there. You can get some high-flow GESI cats which should filter as much as stock, but flow over twice as much. Many race cars in emissions-strict countries run these or similar, all the way at the back of the exhaust to avoid burning them out due to the constant high RPM of the engine. Beyond that, the next best thing would be to have all your primaries be "stepped" in diameter. Each step sends a counter "pulse" backward which will help scavenging but also add high-pitched harmonics to your exhaust note. *Look up the video "How F1 sound is made by Maisteer" here on KZbin* to learn more. If you're smart and get some math involved you can tune where multiple steps can be placed this to add specific harmonies. If not, just stick with one step, halfway through the length of the primaries, and if applicable, the secondaries as well (not applicable on V10, but you could add a step halfway between the collectors and the Y pipe if you want.) Another one is megaphone/reverse cone setups. You can run this after the collecter, after the Y pipe, or all the way towards the end where the axle back is and regardless of duals or single for your final exhaust outlets. This one is much more experimental as far as the sound goes. Sometimes it'll sound better with the megaphones close to the headers, other times in the middle of the system, and other times at the end. *Look up Fluid MotorUnion for info on this.* The last tip I have is kinda a 2 in 1. 1. Never use chambered baffled mufflers such as Flowmaster. One, they're horrible for flow, and 2, they usually sound hollow and tinny in a bad way. Stick with packed mufflers of some kind or hybrid/combined mufflers at most. Any chamber added should just be a big empty one roughly 2x the displacement of the engine. This is another way you can do a sound merge aside from the X pipe or Y pipe, actually. The 2. of this 2 in 1 answer is that you should have at least 1 foot (30cm) of bare pipe after any muffler and before any stylized exhaust tip, and you should have an exhaust tip that's also at least that long, as well. Stubby tips don't project the sound or do much to it, but a longer tip can enhance it slightly. We're getting into nitpick territory here, but still. The reason for having a length of bare pipe between any muffler and exhaust tip is so you don't get that broken rasp that "fart can" mufflers on Hondas give you. Ever notice that all those "fart can" setups are the muffler directly exiting through a 4" or bigger diameter stub right out of the muffler? That's why they sound like that, there's no attenuation of the turbulence inside the muffler before it exits, and there's no time for said turbulence to smooth itself out, either. Also, the massive diameter tip causes the gasses to expand faster/less controlled. This is why squatted trucks in the States run 5 to 6-inch or bigger tips; it makes the exhaust "snap" and "clap," which sounds like a junky piece of crap to me, but that's their style. Stick with sub 5" tips to control this, and remember that the duals into single thing works both ways. Meaning if you divide 5" by 1.414 you get roughly 3.5" so dual 3.5" tips will flow the same as a single 5" tip and will be less snappy/raspy and will also support up to 1100hp at the crank. Meaning a quad tip 3.5" (or dual 5") will support double that.
