My XC70 is identical to yours. My handle rusted also and does not return to its home position. I found that spraying WD40 loosens it up but clearly rust has penetrated the hinge pin for the handle. I may have to replace the entire unit for $236. The other problem is that my license plate bracket could be pulled away from the retaining holes. I suspect the two expanding nuts (part # 987282) have rusted away and no longer hold the bracket in place. Just the screws in the holes were holding it there. I was lucky to have identified this before the bracket, my license plate, and my rear camera fell off while driving. Thanks for your detailed replacement tips in this video.

This is a great video! I'm in the middle of the job right now; found salt inside our 2011 xc70. Best as I can tell, the seal gets compressed, and I like your idea about using locktite on the bolts. However, I think the bolts come loose because the seal compresses over time. Unless I have a reason to get in there, I'm unlikely to keep tightening them through the years. Instead, I'm adding a thin layer of siilicon (grease, not caulking) inside the seal as I replace in hopes of keeping salt out over time, and as you suggest, using a rust blocker on the post. For this I am applying a dri-finish bicycle lube. Although I considered the suggestion of one post here to replace the rod, I can see now that the seal is the main issue of longevity, so I'm glad I got the whole part new. :) Thanks again for your effort.

I had no success replacing the tailgate handle on my 2016 xc70 t5 platinum. The original part number 31301162 was what I needed. So far, I have not found it for sale in the US. Great video, but mine has electronics switch, not a bicycle cable connector.

13:25 I did this replacement before, what others can do to prevent the clip that holds the cable is to First pull on the latch handle (if it can) to release the tension on the cable so you can pry it out. There is, by design, a fair amount of tension on that cable. Also the reverse is true, when reinstalling the cable you will also need to pull on the latch to get the clips closer to the cable so you can seat the cable.

Thanks for this, your content is still very much appreciated. I went on the repair-route instead of replacing though, but your intructions helped me get it out without issues. It is indeed possible to replace the rod itself with a new 4mm one to save some money (a rod is like $3), but chances are the spring inside the handle is the main issue, rusty and broken not allowing it to spring back. While it might be possible to find a new one, it doesnt seem to be something Volvo provides as a spare part. I put a new rod in and simply removed the spring all together, and instead put one around the wire you remove at 6:10. Easy enough and allows the handle to spring back. Hopefully it doesnt break any of the plastic around it :)

Suggestions, I use liquid electrical tape, brush it on the soldered connection, crimped connections this makes water proof for life, I also use it on earth connections that is screw to the chassis. 5mm wide stick on foam around the perimeter will seal. 👍

I removed the handle and pulled the rusty rod out of my 09 V70. The new rod I fitted is 3/16" silver steel. It cost about £1 for materials. The new rod pushes into the place where the old rod was and is held in place at each end. It took me about 45 minutes to repair. Whilst it is apart, lubricate the mechanism with silicone dry lube. Engine oil will make nylon/plastic expand and cause problems in the near future.

I fixed mine this summer.... It had rusted way way Way worse than seen here. Would stick so bad, had to use a screwdriver to pry it back, every single time 😠. Believe it or not, i didn't replace anything, just a little PB Blaster (penetrant) repeatedly at the ends (with them accessible) and moved handle to and fro over and over and Over. Eventually it freed up and then got loose enough that there was 0 resistance. Now, if i feel it begin to stick, i give it a couple extra squeezes opening the hatch, to keep it freed up. I'd like to know if the new assembly is still made with a plain steel pin? There is no way i will spend good $$ if that hasn't been replaced with something nonferrous. Thanks for the Video ✌️ ☮️ ~

I’ve changed it today and except this handle part failure I discovered that unfortunately this steel line/cable are broken at the end. Probably because of this problem with handle I used it to often and to strong. New lock part 31276957 cost is very expensive but I discovered that I don’t need this cable installed 😮😊 because it seems that tailgate opens by using micro switch when using handle! Does anybody know what is the purpose of this cable then? Maybe only for emergency opening the tailgate when there is no electricity in the car?

I've replaced the rod in mine with a piece of 4mm stainless round bar, it is very slightly too small so I found if I made a small burr on both ends it prevents it from sliding out, I had an issue with water getting in around the handle which I have now sorted out but my interior light in the back no longer works and the car also doesn't know when the tailgate is open, would this be related to water getting into the lock?

@@volvosweden For safety reasons. In an accident, the transverse-mounted engine has more space under the hood. An engine mounted longitudinally during an accident would go inside the cabin along with the gearbox. That's the only reason why. There is more space between the bumper and the engine, and between engine and cabin.
