I believe American Idol (Simon) wanted Carrie Underwood from the very start, and they knew Vonzell was the real competition for Carrie, so they rigged that final with overly critical comments on Vonzell in the judging (Simon) so that she and Vonzell didn't have to compete against one another. Carrie may have still won with the votes, but the final should have been between Carrie and Vonzell because they were the best singers. Also let's be real here about the following facts: Fantasia had won the year before in a final agaimst Diana Digarmo that vocally should have been Fantasia vs Latoya London or Jennifer Hudson. White America was not about to vote for back-to-back black girls as the American idol winner.

She was my favorite of that season, but carrie had that commerical country sound to her, which would sell records and have sold out concerts. That's why ALL the judges wanted her to win. I think he envisioned a country star coming out of the show which is exactly what happened. Also the dude was dating a black singer named Sinitta in the uk for years in the 80s. Not everything is about race so stop making it an excuse.

Yea he wasnt racist but at that point the show had to change it up we had 2 african americans winners back to back and she suffered from that had she been on the next season his opinions on her would have been diffrent you see how the praised melinda dolittle and she was no where as good as vonzell however he wanted to ensure carrie would win and to do that because vonzell had become a fan favorite he negativity judged her was it fair hell no they should just let the fans choose to me she was the best her and carrie she shoulda been top 2

It has pretty been decided that Carrie would win that season from the start. Not hating on Carrie because she deserved it & all the success she had but her victory was rigged by the whole AI production that year including the judges. Plus Fantasia just won the previous season who was fantastic. Vonzell just won’t be able to top Fantasia to be honest. But Vonzell was also a great contestant to say the least.

Strategically booted her out to increase the odds of Carrie winning. Carrie had a great voice but so did Vonzell and no way would producers allow for a possible 3rd Black winner in a row winning against a White contestant. (Season 3 Fantasia vs. Dianna; Season 2 Rueben vs Clay) her not winning season 4 was total racist bullshit!

There's never been a winner more pushed by Simon than Carrie & Simon oftentimes downplayed the other contestants, particularly Vonzell, so that Carrie always stayed on top. Carrie was an awesome vocalist and she was very consistent but Carrie rarely tested or challenged herself vocally and her song choices were more predictable while Vonzell was always taking risks vocally. Im someone who has every Carrie Underwood album since AI but I was more emotionally connected to Vonzell during her season because I thought she had to always face an uphill battle in terms of voter turnout and because of Simon's sometimes unfair critique towards her. Vonzell was not the best technical vocalist of her season but Vonzell will go down as one of the most versatile performers and most likable. You never knew what song Vonzell would pick. Carrie had so many things working in her favor (her ethnicity/race, country singer background, beauty, age) and no one was destined to win that season but Carrie. Carrie checked every box in terms of marketability. Vonzell was much more "outside the box" than Carrie and I think Vonzell was more liked in terms of personality and stage presence by non-black voters than just about any other contestant of color. Btw, I'm black and I'm not saying this to be racist or biased. If Vonzell was white, she might've had a much easier journey but I don't want to take anything from Carrie, who is one of the cleanest most technically-talented vocalist ever to come onto AI. Carrie had a voice and pitch as pure and perfect as anyone could ever ask for. Vonzell had the personality and stage presence but it wasnt enough and that's okay.

Having witnessed her performances in this season, the way she performed better and better from the audition till the finals, I was surprised to learn that she's the only one not getting a contact from any label from that season! Can you imagine it? She could have been another Whitney, Chaka, Diana, and Dionne, if she was given a chance. What a waste!

She was by no means a technically perfect or close to a perfect singer, but she still had a great instrument and she was so fun to watch during her season. She's so versatile, challenged herself every week vocally and stylistically and has great personality and stage presence. Simon never gave her a 100% good critique. It was always a backhanded compliment. But she rose through that and ended as 3rd, which was the best for her because tbh I don't think she had a chance against Bo and Carrie. They were gonna take that top 2 spot. And the other thing I like about is eventhough Vonzell was the "black diva" of the season, her voice was not like the black divas of before, like Fantasia, Jhud, Latoya, Tamyra. Vonzell's voice was thinner, sweeter (and current) but still has power and range.

Not her best, probably one of her worst. But this was a stressfull week for her, she got food poisoned, she had some problem with a family member (she didnt mentioned tho). But yeah, thats why she was flat and burst into tears by the end. Luckly enough people gave her a pass so she could at least finish 3rd as she deserved.
