At 42 Gear Street I'm joined by the legato master Tom Quayle who will teach me the basics of the said technique. I've never really practiced legato so I'm definitely starting with the simple stuff.

I must say Tom Quayle is not only a fantastic guitar player, which I already knew, but also a fantastic teacher. The way he conveys his knowledge with patience, simplicity and clarity, is just phenomenal and a rare gift indeed. It is very rare that someone is both a great player and a great teacher at the same time, but Tom is.

Tom's a total monster on the guitar, million percent right about that left hand technique, everything just becomes easier to play once you start getting it down.

Legato beginners should start the 1-3-5 shape at the 12th fret and gradually move the shape down 1 fret at time, to get the hand and fingers used to the stretch.

Amazing lessons!! Basic are indeed important, I’ve always been saying : small detail make huge improvements!! Always having problems with my little finger because he is really small !! I guess the more I practice the more I will understand the mechanics of my hand !! Don’t get me wrong , I’m really capable but those small details your will get me even better ! I totally agree, it's all in the details! As I mentioned in the video, I've never really moved my thumb behind the neck and now that I'm actually doing it, it has made a huge difference!

have to say this has really helped me. Been playing guitar for around 15 years and when i started to learn the caged system i went from playing pentatonics to playing more open scale shapes and 3 note per string stuff. i don't think i took enough time to analyse my technique and as a result my technique suffered but just hearing Tom talk about the hand forming a relaxed I've totally changed how I play and it is way more easy to rip around the neck.

Yep sometimes we can learn everything but the basics. It's great to have someone remind us that with few simple changes our playing can become more relaxed. After doing this video I've been placing my thumb behind the neck more intentionally and it has improved my left hand fretting a lot.

Move everything up a couple of frets to make the stretch slightly easier. Move down when the stretch can be done more comfortably.

Unfortunately there isn’t many great teachers out there because all they are concerned about is money and I’ve seen this many times and this is the problem and why people would rather watch on you tube for help because it’s comfortable and they aren’t just after money instead of helping and you can keep pausing going back etc much easier 👍

Tom forgot to mention though pull off isn't simply just lifting off the frets but he actually employ a downwards clawing motion when he pulled off and that's especially hard to execute like he did with his pinky while his ring finger is still on the fret, talk about total finger independence...

Guthrie Govin gives the exact opposite advice about force/finger pressure when generating notes. I love Govin but Tom has a better approach.

This lesson pertains to seated playing. Seated playing is completely different than standing playing. Standing playing, it’s not possible to get the thumb behind the back of the neck like that.

I have a problem: my thumb wants to rest against my index finger or between it and the middle finger. The more I bring my thumb against my middle finger the more strain I get in the wrist and the more flat my index finger becomes (almost laying across the bottom 3 strings). Is it normal?

Interesting, don't remember seeing that kind of left hand technique before. I'm no expert to give you advice on this so I would suggest finding a good teacher and working on this. As Tom says in this video, there shouldn't be any strain on your hands while playing, so it's good to take a look at it before you do any serious damage on your hands. Hope this helps.
