Ian Klemm stops by to chat scopes - bore scopes that is. This handy device will unlock the secrets of your rifle’s bore. And they retail for around $60. Not bad for a device that not long ago was likely top-tier spy-ops material. Tune in to hear what it can tell you and why you just might want to pick one up.

You often mention your favorite hunting bullets for specific game in passing (Barnes tipped TSX, LRX, Nosler acubond etc. in their respective weights). A detailed episode which lays out the best bullets for taking whitetail, mule deer, elk etc. would go a long way towards helping viewers, such as myself, in selecting the best caliber for hurling those projectiles down range. In addition, this advice would go a long way towards aiding young hunters towards reloading for the job at hand. I would love to see this in the format of “selecting the correct bullet for the job.” Cheers!

Gun barrels are like guitar strings, brand new strings sound and feel weird and inaccurate but play them for a few hours and they are on the money👌

Being a gun collector for 60+ years I think the scope is a game change if the seller will let you use it! I always get the gun cheap enough that if it ends up needing a barrel I can still come out on the deal! The only thing the bore scope doesn’t tell you if the chamber won’t close or reopen which is why you need the Go and No go guages!

Instead of go no go gauges you can use a case for the rifle caliber and a piece of scotch tape. With a piece of tape on end(base) of case the round should not chamber or be super tight at most but it really shouldn't chamber

Checking out new barrels is really important. I bought an expensive barrel from GunMag Warehouse. They wouldn't stand behind the product that they sold me and actually charged me for sending it back to me after they examined it. I now use one of the inexpensive bore scope mentioned in this video and I love it.

ANOTHER great technical discussion. The tabletop analogy around 4:50 was spot on. Several great outside-the-box ideas brought forward. A walk off home run.

I'm definitely one of those meticulous, attention to detail guys and knowing that about myself has held me back from buying a bore scope. Lol. This podcast has eased some of that tension. Might just have to get one now. Thanks gents!!

I got one of the new video camera types after 40+ years of shooting and am really glad I did. The best use yet was figuring out why my friend's 7mm Mag had a case sticking issue. Definitely worth getting one, but not required. I do use it after cleaning, sometimes. Put it on your Christmas list. Erik Cortina had/has(?) some great videos on KZbin about using one, cleaning, etc.

I've heard forming a donut in the chamber is from over trimming your brass. Copper forms a ridge along a ring(void) near the case/bullet junction.

I am of the school of clean in moderation on a fairly regular basis for a hunting rifle,no harsh stuff, take a fouling shot and you should be good to go through your hunting season unless it gets wet.If your target shooting that will take a modified version of the same depending on round count,if your shooting copper bullets use something with some copper removal capability and be sure to neutralize with a few oily patches and dry before shooting, listen to what your gun is telling you, letting your gun cool and not letting it heat up much will make that barrel last much better, but that’s not always so practical in a prairie dog shoot or some forms of target competition

Used my Lyman bore scope to inspect the barrel of a new rifle prior to scope mount. To my horror, it appeared that the rifling tool came apart an inch or two from the muzzle end. Severe damage was done. I sent pics to the dealer and manufacturer. Both were 100% ready to replace the barrel. It would have never been a shooter. The scope paid for itself. Recommend.

Definitely a shocking experience when I first started using a bore scope on all my rifles. Context is DEFINITELY necessary but with a little time and practice it becomes a very useful tool (and one you find all kinds of other uses for, lol)

What about using a scope to see where the lands line up in relation to the hole for the gas block? I’d assume that could affect accuracy if the hole is in a groove vs middle of a land?

Hornady Match has probably been the only thing to touch the barrel until this year's hunting season (First time I took it out to hunt deer) when I ran some of Ryan's favorite Barnes bullets (127 grain LRX) through it.

I know of a 300 WSM that was fired too many times without enough time for cooling the barrel and the leade is heavily scarred. The guy who used a bore scope said the leade looked like the skin of an orange. If he cleans the bore every 10 rounds or so, accuracy remains good. If he lets it go longer the accuracy falls and falls until cleaning.

Some points they missed - they have a limited focus distance. If you get one that works for .22 - it won’t work for .45 acp

I have a Remington 700 ADL, in 308, would not shoot for crap, cleaned and removed copper, 2 in the same hole ,then a flyer, so one afternoon I shot about 70 rounds through it, and haven't cleaned it in the last 20 years, 3 in a half inch at 100 yards, will never clean it again

One of the first things you see with a borescope, is that yours is too big to fit down that barrel you want to look at ! Mine is 9mm, too big for a 9mm barrel.

They are as useful as a cleaning rod and not much more expensive. I'm of the school where I clean only when I have to. Over time and with experience you learn what to look for and when it's needed. Every rifle is unique and you can learn a lot by seeing the difference and similarities. A picture is worth more than a thousand forum opinions!
