The 7mm PRC is the new kid on the block in the 7mm cartridge world. But how does it stack up to the historic dominance of the tried-and-true 7mm Rem Mag? Will it bully the 7mm Rem Mag out of its long-standing number one spot among all the 7’s or be added to the heap of 7mm cartridge skulls it sits on? Mark Boardman and Ryan Muckenhirn hit the range, shoot gel, and debate which is better.

I’ve lived in Alaska for 44 yrs. My 7mm Mag has killed many mt goat, bunch of sitka blacktail, several black bear, couple of brown bear, several Caribou, Washington state black tail, moose. Everything I shot at died instantly except Brown bear. It took a couple of shots. I could really tell a difference in shock power between the 30-06. I was 16 when I first got it, now I’m 64. Stopped by Benchmark barrels today to see about a new carbon barrel. BTW my most accurate load was IMR 4831, loaded full tilt ( old recipe, newer ones not close)175 grain Nosler Partition. I was so thankful that the gun loved that load. One day at the range I loaded new reloads and after getting on paper, shooting slow do barrel cool I had a 3 shot group in 1 hole half size of dime. Older guy next to me wanted to buy my gun on the spot 😂. Yes. I love my 7mm Remington Magnum

I used RL22 and a 175 gr Partition or 160 gr Accubond. Both were hammers. I've seen that 175 gr Partition break the spine above the pelvis and exit low center chest on a bull elk; lengthwise through the whole animal like a runaway freight train and still bury itself in a lodgepole deep enough I didn't care to dig it out. The Accubond got a good 100 fps faster and had a higher BC, so I used it when I went east of the Rockies to hunt mulies. But in the mountains, that 175 gr Partition was hard to beat. I love the 7mm Rem Mag. I still have that rifle, but since my reloading room got turned into a nursery and I haven't been able to load for it, I find myself using my .308 Win more these days. I don't get to the eastern half of the state much and the .308 does okay in the mountains where shots rarely get outside of 100 yards.

One important thing to note in the X vs Y comparisions for people to remember: even if X is technically better than Y, having Y is typically a good reason to not use X. Upgrading a whole rifle and ammo collection for marginal improvments is a game most people dont want to play.

7 Rem Mag is here to stay. Available all around the world jus about anywhere you hunt. Great all around cartridge and affordable. I have been hunting with it for 30 years, my son and daughter both started off with them and shot their first deer with it and I own 2 of them. All these new hot cartridges are great but there are way too many of them and they are expensive to shoot. For hunting, I don't see anything the advantage of the PRC over the Rem Mag, unless your hunting 700+ yards. That said, IMHO, 99% of hunters aren't hunting that distance and probably don't have the skills needed to make ethical shots at anything past 500 yards.

Speaking of the Nosler Partition bullet. One year a friend of mine and I did a late November Mt Goat hunt southeast Alaska. He shot a huge trophy Billy. When we were boning it out out his knife made a Ching sound on the back hip socket. There was a mushroomed 30 caliber partition bullet formed around the bone. All healed. I’ve thought often how tuff those animals are, to take a hit like that, go through winter and survive!

Agreed, might as well compare apples to oranges. Gun weight, barrel length, twist rate, bullet weight, powder type, grains of powder, would change some of their results. The shape of the case is creating differences in performance. Might be minor differences, but it is improvement towards a better cartridge.

I understand why the 7 prc came to be. But what i take away from it is that if you already have a 7 rem mag you really don't need a prc for typical hunting ranges. But if you shoot at extended to extreme...then you may want to consider 7 prc.

I agree, the 7RM can stabilize all of the 165gr projectiles out to 500 yards with enough energy for Elk size game. How much terminal performance does one need to be ethical at practical ranges. Even for shooting out to a mile the 1:9.5 twist has proven its worthiness. I also don't see any need to down grade from my .264 WM to a 6.5 PRC. With bullets being designed to fit into AR10 magazines for hunting, shorter high BC bullets now available are a game changer for slower twist calibers. BondStrike, Speer Impact, to name a couple can really bring out their performance potential.
@jfess1911
@jfess1911 10 ай бұрын
@@martinfernandez5005 Do you have any trouble getting accurate loads with the .264 WM? In front of the case, the chamber of the Winchester Magnums are just straight tapers rather than having a tube-section of tight freebore to line up the bullet is aligned with the bore to take the rifling evenly. For extreme accuracy, the "match style" chamber with a section of tight freebore makes a difference, but I wonder if it makes that much difference in hunting. Typically, a "taper-only" chamber can shoot well, it is just more picky. The 7mm Rem Mag always had the "match style" chamber, as does every Remington and Hornady cartridge since. Thanks

The PRC should have a better wound channel with a higher grain bullet thats moving about the same speed as a lighter bullet. Theres more energy available for the creation of hydrostatic shock. That cannot be disputed, this argument is the same as guys that want full penetration vs energy expended completely in the animal, there are positives to both. The overall availability to the everyday non reloading shooter the hat tips towards the 7rem. Which is more what this is about.

The 7 rem mag had one of the biggest changes in rifle hunting history and for good reason it’s still one of the very best to hunt anything in North America with! I know you young bucks think all the new things are the real rage but all you have to do to make the 7 rem mag better then the PRC is put a faster twist barrel! I have hunted reloaded and collected rifles for 60+ years and have seen a lot of changes but have come to realize newer is not always better even when most of the crowd is on the bandwagon for it! I don't think the 7PRC is going away, in fact I see it only getting more popular. It's a two-way street in terms of availability: the more people that buy into the 7PRC the more companies will produce ammo for it. At the same time, the more people stay away from it the less manufacturers will make it. That's why I always tell these naysayers that they're effectively hoping these new cartridges die simply because they're invested (usually emotionally) in the older and more commonplace cartridges. Anyone that says "I can find plenty of 7mag ammo" is fighting a redundant argument, OF COURSE it's going to be more common, it's been around for 60 years, but that doesn't mean the PRC isn't better.

I disagree with the premise that the 7mm RM will be a relic. The 7 PRC will be the relic along with the 300 PRC. They just don’t really do anything that their older belted predecessors can’t. If you’re a hunter it’s just really hard to justify buying a rifle chambered for a hot new round that is a marginal improvement over existing cartridges with the glaring downfall of sparse ammo supply. You really have to think about whether or not you can get ammo if you ho on a hunting trip and forgot your ammo or handloads. That’s one thing that will always be in the back of my mind. I’ve done it before. I’ve driven 4 hours away on a hunting trip and realized I forgot my hunting cartridges. You’re not going to find these fancy PRC cartridges at a bait and tackle shop in a small town in Montana.

7PRC is an all-around better cartridge that nobody truly needs 'right now' unless you're not only a reloader but can (a) actually get your hands on the components and (b) are quite proficient at it. 7PRC is a not a 'let me learn how to reload' kind of caliber. That's why 7RM still holds the title and the crown. Having said that, I am definitely getting one so I can hunt when I can't hit (or find) a 1200+ range and vice-verse. The 7PRC does both exceedingly well, but you can't do both (or enjoy doing it) if you start counting rounds... that means you only have enough to 'kind of' enjoy your hobby. I love my 6.5CM and have enough ammo to not worry about sending a couple hundred down range weekend after weekend. If I had a 6.5PRC I'd probably think .... 'well, I'll bring 1 box today .....'. Not fun at all. As for hunting, 7RM gets it done well out to 600+ yds (with ease) and my average shot has always been 150-200 yards.

I've searched all over KZbin and can't find anyone getting near 3000. My 7rem is in a 26 in barrel but gets 3035 avg velocity wirh 162s. It's about a wash, but the 162s are flatter to 1000 yards.

The southern Rem Mag is the most accurate cartridge I have ever fired. In the very first Centerfire rifle I ever purchased, a 1979 or 80 model Ruger model 77, I fired a 20 round group into a .049 inch spread. The group had a diameter at the greatest 0.33 in. When you subtract the diameter of the projectile to get Center to Center spread. It's 49ooo ths of an inch. I do like the idea of the 7 mm PRC but the Rem Mag has an advantage that the PRC does not. It is headspace on the belt of the cartridge that means when you lock it up into battery the projectile is held in the center of the chamber. It's not lying on the bottom of the chamber is not pushed to one side of the chamber with the extractor. None of that crap. The belt forces it to be cantilevered into the center in alignment with the bore.

The initial Hornady ammo was giving all sorts of pressure signs including blowing primers out. More recent Hornady ammo does not have pressure signs but is running very slow closer to 2750-2800 vs the box claimed 3,000 with the 175eldx. Federal Terminal ascent seems to be performing better with the same 175eldx running in the 29xx range and no pressure signs.

Add a 1:8 twist, target throat, and increase the SAAMI spec from noticeably low old 61,000 psi to the more modern 65,000 psi of the 7 PRC and they would be twins in performance. The older .264 Win Mag had a 1:9 twist and a 64,000 psi SAAMI and it was released 4 years earlier. Remington left a lot on the table. I hand load and will soon replace my worn out 7 Rem Mag barrel with a 1:8 twist with a target throat and it should serve me well. And since I have over 1000 rounds of once or twice fired brass It will do fine and I use the shoulder for head spacing, not the belt. The PRC is a better designed case, but I am all set up with grand dad.

What difference does it make that the 7mm RM has more bullet choices? How many people are choosing the ones that the PRC doesn't have? Is it statistically significant? Doubtful. This wasn't quite apples to apples. Shoot identical bullets, and weights. Shoot the identical 175gr ELDX. Yes the rem mag won but they still down played it. BC is BC if they are the sane projectile. 7 rem mag is awesome. PRC does have pros, short case, no belt which us irrelevant to me. But the MAIN reason for the love of the 7 PRC is for the heavy projectiles and the high twist barrels. Its actually more about how the 7prc rifle is built vs the cartridge. IF you put i high twist barrel on a 7 rem mag you could now shoot the same heavy high BC bullets. Boom 7mag wins again.

@WyitAlan 10 ай бұрын
@cheatinggravity173 copper bullets are different entirely, to get that heavy they need to be significantly longer and this causes a couple issues. Issue one being that longer bullets don't stabilize the same, think of comparing the 168gr LRX to a 195gr Berger EOL. Same as the 145 LRX would likely compare to a 168 accubond or something similar. The second problem you'll run into is COL. Given that the 7 rem mag case is longer than the 7prc case properly seating those long heavy bullets can become problematic due to magazine length issues both detachable and internal. My current 7rem mag is pretty well maxed out in the 160s because I can't seat any heavier bullets and still use my detachable mag. Sure I could single feed them but that kind of defeates the purpose

I’d have to see more apples vs apples for bullets, say a 160 and 175 in both. You also have to take into account that ammo manufacturers are selling ammo for rifles potentially 60 years old in 7 Rem Mag. My $450 (at the time) 20 year old A-Bolt II pushes my 160 gr Accubonds right at 3100 and factory loaded Barnes 139 LRX at 3280. Both of these loads give me 4-1/2” to 6” groups at 600 yards out of a budget rifle. I don’t have any friends who own a 7PRC yet so I haven’t had a chance to play with one. I’m betting that using the same bullets in both and modern powders in the old 7 mag, the two cartridges would be a heck of a lot closer matched.

There are fewer bullets options available but so far it seems I don't need options. Every bullet I've tried in my 7 prc has respectable accuracy. I contribute this to the case design and the tighter tolerances between the bullet and where the rifling starts. In the past I have taken a old school cartridge, .270 win, out to find a bullet it liked and it only liked 1 out of the 6 different bullets I tried that day. My point is more options that aren't accurate aren't more options. As others have said, it's not worth getting a new rifle if you have a 7 rem mag, but the 7prc is better.

I wonder if the fatter case body helps with recoil feel for the 7 PRC. I’ve seen the same observation elsewhere and in this test it was with almost identical rifles. Practically the same energy, but the 7 PRC has the force spread over a wider area and that results in more of a push than a snap. I think that would mean recoil favors the 7 PRC as recoil velocity and felt recoil matter more than just overall energy.
