Is there a new Vortex® wildcat cartridge in town, or an old one gone the way of so many of its wildcat siblings? Scott Parks joins Jimmy Hamilton and Mark Boardman to chat about the “6mm Vortex” - a 6mm cartridge he developed after countless hours of reloading and bullet-sending range time, trying unsuccessfully to get the performance he wanted from existing options.
As always, we want to hear your feedback! Let us know if there are any topics you'd like covered on the Vortex Nation™ podcast by asking us on any one of our social media platforms and using #VortexNationPodcast.

I have two Sako rifles which have collectively lead me to the conclusion that Sako is one of the top 'premier' rifle companies in the world. Both of mine, however, are .375 H&H Magnums ;)

I would like to see a 375 raptor episode! It seems to give the 308 case with its shor length some new heavy hitting capabilities with a littet bit more modest velocity and recoil, compared to the classical 375 cartridges. The cartridge also have som interesting subsonic capabilities.

have NEVER had a problem shooting my old 6mm Remington sub moa in the 60 odd years I've owned it. From the day My dad bought it for me, it would outshoot my Bro's .243 Win. but when I took some advice from an Apple exec physics guru on matching the reloaded (4831) rounds to the chamber of my specific gun, 1 hole "mickey mouse" 3 round groups started becoming the norm instead of the exception. Frankly, I never understood why the cartridge has pretty much been relegated to history, except for the firearm industry's proclivity for constant hyping of the 'latest and greatest' so as to 'pump' the market. :(
@seeratlasdtyria4584

@Jeremy Chapman er, uh, I seem to remember Remington changed the twist shortly after the .243 came out:) Mine has that change. As for 'accuracy' and 'improve', well 1 hole "mickey mouse" 3 shot groups (think of the hat) work just fine for me. Further, the fact remains that handloaded 6mm rounds simply outperform the .243 across the board. Lastly, as for the 'Latest and Greatest, Must Have, King of calibers', now riding the 'mfg HYPE Train', the 6.5 Creedmore, well, I and perhaps a million others still fire the 120 year plus old, sniper accurate 6.5 Swede Mauser:), which has proven to be a "pretty good cartridge" LOL. One of mine even (no kidding:) has the '666' serial number:). Hey, its getting late...don't miss your 'train'.....:) the 6.8's are coming....

@@seeratlasdtyria4584 the change in twist caused them a ton of problems, people would purchase ammunition for the faster twist and shoot it in a slower twist rifle and freak out about the poor accuracy and blame the manufacturers. The average person still doesn’t understand the relationship between bullet length and twist rate, and we have all the information of the world at our fingertips.

LAPUA 6.5x47 also predates the 6.5 CM. interesting development results on the 6 Vor though. Decades ago when I started handloading, I quickly realized that the most efficient powder for a given case capacity is where two lines intersected; max chamber pressure capacity and max case capacity. If the powder burn rate is a little too fast, it'll reach max chamber pressure before reaching max powder capacity; giving you velocities below max potential. If the powder burn rate is a little too slow, you'll reach max case capacity before reaching max chamber pressure; again giving you velocities below max potential. But if you match the powder burn rate perfectly where you reach max chamber pressure at max case volume capacity, then you have a perfectly balanced load; and it's the balanced loads that have the greatest potential for accuracy due to it's efficiency.

Do a 6.5x47/6x47 video! Lapua made the 6.5x47 to answer mag length issues with the 260rem. Every one I know of is a shooter. Most shoot 123-130s but 136-140s shoot too! People started necking it down to 6mm and then peterson made brass for a while. I have zero experience with the 6x47

284 Winchester, Ron Spomer loves it, Australians use it in long range shooting competitions, its been wild cat-ed to 6 and 6.5, .... And Weatherby based its RPM cartrages off it. But what happened to the old OG .284? "The Cartrage That Missed the Draft Pick." Could it have been a hit if was given a chance, or was it doomed from the start? It's about half way between a 7mm 06 and a 7mm Remington magnum.

Set aside the Cartrages, what about bullets? Nosler Partition, Nosler Acubond, Barns TSX, Federal Terminal Ascent, There's some realy good bullets,..... and some realy cruddy ones. A good bullet can take a humble cartrage and make it great! But poor bullet, can give a great Cartrage a bad name.

🤔 Ask: Can you ream out an AR10 style barrel that's in 450 Marlin to something like 458 Alpine (458 WSM)...? Been on the ropes wanting to tackle a 458WSM but, would be nice to know. The 300WSM bolt shares the 450 Marlin facing and works - just assuming the 458WSM would be fun..

Not all Ackley use the same neck shoulder junction. The 30-30 is one the shoulder moves way forward but that is because they have a rim! So rimless you be purty correct. Also I think the 224 Valkyrie suffers the same problem maybe just worse. In between powder nodes…

Finicky? Holey crap lol! I've never seen a 6.5x47 Lapua be finicky. I personally know a few people that had great success with 6.5x47L. It has been super easy to load for. I'm wondering if his issues he had were more of a load development issue. Being inconsistent from day to day is definitely a symptom of being in the wrong node. I would venture a guess that he had more going on than just case capacity.
