I was sitting in church as a small child (I was about five or six years old) listening to the pastor's weekly fanciful musings that made me question the concept of a supposed almighty "god", afterwards I ask the pastor all these pointed questions, my mother would give me dirty looks and my father would just look at me with a sheepish grin and say with a wink, "just you never mind.", he didn't buy it either. I used to be a bit more disillusioned with voting for either party because i saw it as a choice between 2 similarly corrupt sides of the same coin. While i still feel the Democrat party has many issues and largely looks down on its own base, there are stark differences. A perfect example is the numerous laws passed in red states last year regarding water breaks. Several red states passed legislation BANNING municipalities from requiring water breaks for workers, while some blue states have mandatory water break laws. Naturally Texas had an extraordinary number of heat stroke deaths this year because of this. It is like this across the board on issues of basic human dignity. Workers rights, human rights, healthcare, economics, immigration. Democrats have human dignity at the basis of their party platform, even if many of them don't follow it. While the GOP degrades human wellbeing at every turn. You may not think the Government has any part in human wellbeing, but, unfortunately for those of you that think that way, a lack of action on the governments part to protect its people, will lead to deterioration of that wellbeing. So, while i agree government should stay out of many things, most people would agree, we also depend on some sort of power structure to defend against abuses, and its our job to ensure the government doesn't commit those same abuses.

There has been pretty good reason to doubt the polling and, since the release of the Iowa poll the other day, it has been all but confirmed that pollsters have been doing a really bad job of building models for this go around. Even Nate Silver who has sold his soul to the devil (PeterThiel) has acknowledged that the probability of every swing state having next to no variance for two months straight is functionally zero. Now there's a whole thing with some pollsters using machine learning instead of actually polling people. But there's no telling how widespread that all is yet. Point being, the numbers have been bad and should be ignored. So far, based on recent reassessment, it looks like Kamala is going to win this thing. And there's a decent chance for a total blowout. Of course, that doesn't happen if people take that as a sign that things will be okay and don't go vote for her. So go vote Harris/Walz. Do it yesterday. Bring a friend.

Lax education standards mostly. Christians have carved out a lot of exceptions for themselves including home schooling that barely has standards at all compared to public school and private schools where they can cram a bunch of magical nonsense into the heads of children. Couple that with the regular defunding of public schools (as well as open hostility towards them from billionaires who, unhappy with their billions, also want to privatize all schooling) leads to massive classrooms where, even if a teacher does care about education, they lack the resources and time to actually do their job to a reasonable standard. Half of the US is illiterate. Actually slightly more than half don't meet the full standard for literacy. Meaning most Americans have trouble with reading comprehension. Meaning that even when presented with the things Aron laid out here, they don't actually understand them unless you dumb it way down and, ideally, use pictures and emotive language. Aron asked how stupid are we as a country. That's how stupid. That's why this sort of thing will continue to haunt us. We have a huge chunk of the population that are fundamentally unprepared to deal with even the basic competencies required to live in a post industrial, democratic society. That's why they keep siding with the people who want to bring us back to the feudal era.

No. Fascism formally requires the nation state to exist. There was no such thing as a nation state for most of human history, certainly not in the time of the earliest Jesus follower movement. Christianity started as a cult. Pretty bog standard one for the time by all accounts. That's why there are similarities. But there are differences too. Ignoring them in favor of lumping them into a category which is functionally just "thing bad" is reductive and anti-intellectual. It ignores all of the work of sociologists, political theorists and religion scholars in order to take a dig at christianity. Which like, I get the impulse. But we can criticize christianity for what it is perfectly adequately.

There is a reason why I am agnostic. I don't know and more specifically neither does anyone else. In fact, we don't even know specifically what it is we believe or disbelief because we can't describe, see, hear, touch or taste it. The last time I checked, I don't seem to be outside of time and space so for me to say whether there is or isn't something that's beyond my ability to test or comprehend is insanity. Believing something for comfort or because life is fearful is one thing. But making that fear a policy is another thing entirely and controlling people because of your mechanism of fear control is absolutely disgusting and distasteful. The first time I voted was in 2012. Back then I was a single issue voter, and Mitt Romney saying "I like coal" was enough to sway me to Obama.
