Hillary Clinton’s theory of politics is unfashionable, but she doesn’t care.
Subscribe to our channel! goo.gl/0bsAjO
On page 239 of What Happened, Hillary Clinton reveals that she almost ran a very different campaign in 2016. Before announcing for president, she read Peter Barnes’s book With Liberty and Dividends for All, and became fascinated by the idea of using revenue from shared natural resources, like fossil fuel extraction and public airwaves, alongside revenue from taxing public harms, like carbon emissions and risky financial practices, to give every American “a modest basic income.”
Her ambitions for this idea were expansive, touching on not just the country’s economic ills but its political and spiritual ones. “Besides cash in people’s pockets,” she writes, “it would be also be a way of making every American feel more connected to our country and to each other.”
This is the kind of transformative vision that Clinton was often criticized for not having. It’s an idea bigger than a wall, perhaps bigger even than single-payer health care or free college. But she couldn’t make the numbers work. Every version of the plan she tried either raised taxes too high or slashed essential programs. So she scrapped it. “That was the responsible decision,” she writes. But after the 2016 election, Clinton is no longer sure that “responsible” is the right litmus test for campaign rhetoric. “I wonder now whether we should’ve thrown caution to the wind, embraced [it] as a long-term goal and figured out the details later,” she writes.
What Happened has been sold as Clinton’s apologia for her 2016 campaign, and it is that. But it’s more remarkable for Clinton’s extended defense of a political style that has become unfashionable in both the Republican and Democratic parties. Clinton is not a radical or a revolutionary, a disruptor or a socialist, and she’s proud of that fact. She’s a pragmatist who believes in working within the system, in promising roughly what you believe you can deliver, in saying how you’ll pay for your plans. She is frustrated by a polity that doesn’t share her “thrill” over incremental policies that help real people or her skepticism of sweeping plans that will never come to fruition. She believes in politics the way it is actually practiced, and she holds to that belief at a moment when it’s never been less popular.
This makes Clinton a more unusual figure than she gets credit for being: Not only does she refuse to paint an inspiring vision of a political process rid of corruption, partisanship, and rancor, but she’s also actively dismissive of those promises and the politicians who make them.
On Tuesday morning, I sat down with Clinton for an hour on the first official day of her book tour. It is a cliché that stiff candidates become freer, easier, and more confident after they lose - see Gore, Al - but it is true for Clinton. Jon Stewart used to talk of the “buffering” you could see happening in the milliseconds between when Clinton was asked a question and when she answered; the moments when she played out the angles, envisioned the ways her words could be twisted, and came up with a response devoid of danger but suffused with caution. That buffering is gone.
In our conversation, she was as quick and confident as I’ve seen her, making the case for her politics without worrying too much about the coalitional angles or the possible lines of offense. And she says plenty that can, and will, offend. In our discussion, she lit into Bernie Sanders’s single-payer plan, warned that Donald Trump is dragging us down an authoritarian path, spoke openly of the role racism and white resentment played in the campaign, and argued that the outcome of the 2016 election represented a failure of the media above all. This was Clinton unleashed, and while she talked about what happened, it was much more interesting when she talked about what she believed should have happened.

One year after the fact, and its amazing how much visceral hatred for Hillary still remains, and the extent to which it colours popular perception. She's written a book exploring "what happened", which, no matter how you slice it, will mean looking at the reasons why she lost. Being able to reflect on that experience, mistakes and all - and learn from it is pretty important for anyone to be able to do. You won't get far in life if you can't do this. But slather this with kneejerk hatred and it suddenly becomes entirely a blame game! I mean, it takes a deep plunge into the the pit of 'alternative facts' to be able to watch this interview and come away with the conclusion that Hillary is simply doling out blame. And yet, here we are. I say this as an international observer - someone who hasn't been caught up with the hyper-partisanship and tribalism that is clearly afflicting many Americans - you guys need to take a step back and have a good look at yourselves and what you're becoming. What you've already become. When you can't tell fact from fiction at the most basic levels - when your prejudices are affecting your judgement to this extent, something has gone seriously wrong. And as alarming as this is - and it should be alarming to just about everyone - it appears like a huge segment of both media and laypeople (as evidenced in the comment section here) alike are clearly more interested in indulging in their hatred and self satisfied criticism, than giving any thought to the content of the discussion.

I always like hearing Hillary Clinton speaking about policy. Unfortunately, she didn't do it enough in 2016. She was more focused on talking about Donald Trump. That was disappointing to me because I think she had some good policy ideas. Also, I don't like it when she tries to blame Bernie Sanders for her defeat. I know the primary was very frustrating for her, Bernie was a tough opponent and wasn't always nice to her. But she needs to take responsibility too. As soon as he lost the Democratic primary, Bernie Sanders fully supported Hillary Clinton and campaigned for her until the last day, so he did his job.

Juxtaposing the flurry of negative comments, one could understand why it was such an uphill battle for her in the 2016 election. With all the craziness of the last election, I listened to barely any of Clinton's speeches but many of Trump's. Hearing her for the first time is so enlightening. I wish her eloquence and pragmatism was imposed onto Trump during the election, but there's not much we can do about that now.

Been watching this interview and what I feel is that she was not the right candidate for this political era. She has her merits and in some other time would have been an excellent President, but the people of today needed a different voice and that voice wasn't hers, it was Bernie's. There is art in knowing when is your time to shine. Even if she tried to ape what Bernie was, she would've come across as inauthentic and contrived. She did make some major mistakes though. She shouldn't have taken money from super PACs. She should've released her speeches and should have taken responsibility for the e-mail debacle. It was just not in her destiny to be POTUS. But kudos to Ezra for such well thought out questions and discussion. This is why I'm subscribed to Vox!

One of my favorite one on one post election interviews with HRC. Clear, concise and informative. If we could have had more interviews like this pre-election (and eliminated the hysterical-Republican noise swirling around her campaign) she would have won. HRC was the right candidate for the job. Hillary dedicated much of her adult life to public service, but was looked down upon for it & raked over the coals to a degree that no other candidate was subjected to. Instead, the media (& many of you) chose to chase after the Trump circus-on-wheels under the guise of wanting to "bring change to the system" or just blow the "establishment" to smithereens when in fact, ironically, many of us are pragmatists in real life. Instead of treating the election seriously, people ran after sensationalized stories that had little truths to them. Politicians should not be here to entertain us. Focus instead on public service - you know, the job they were "hired" to do. This lack in pride in one's work has seemed to permeate so many fields of work that it is now acceptable to focus on entertainment at work instead of doing the work! The people who actually care about their craft are looked at as if they are the crazy ones. Sickening. I wish I had the patience and hope that HRC has, but unfortunately I have a very low tolerance for BS.

I love the question at 26:28 personally I hear this all the time "All politicians are corrupt" and personally I can't agree with that sentiment. To me it shows how the years the public has become convinced (largely by an overly encouraging media, largely by the momentum of generational laziness beginning with the Baby Boomers) that it is okay to be undiligent in research. It seems most the people who say it, are just using it as an excuse to not take a serious look at political records, and when they find what seems to be contradictions in the politicians records to think about how the politician could have reasoned the two together.

Back then by he haters said oh “ it’s a power move to show how powerful she is in the administration she doesn’t really care”. Why didn't she give interviews like this when she running? This is obviously late in the game to get a look into her contemplative process. We didn't get much insight into this during this campaign. A lot of this is probably the campaign's attempt to make interviews with journalists as infrequent as possible because that would give another opportunity to probe her email investigation. I think was a mistake. She should have early on been more emphatically apologize for her email probe missteps in a full press conference. This would make it old news, leaving journalists with a different set of issues to cover. Her problem was not Donald Trump. The problem is we heard filtered messages crafted by the campaign and were identically repeated at each rally, meaning the campaign kept trying to recycle the same old news that news outlets treated as such. And for the record she really needs to understand that, yes- people do care about immigration - in has been a hallmark of the Democratic Party's abandonment of working class citizens whom they used to be the strongest advocates. It's citizens you are elected to represent, not the non-electorate. And lastly come to sense with money in politics. Democrats raked in the corporate contributions this past election, so do they really believe in campaign finance reform- the notion of crafting a constitutional amendment to address the Citizens United issue?
