For anyone who tries Cardboard and thinks VR is a bit underwhelming, keep in mind that using Cardboard is like visiting some new place but being tied up to a pole so you can only move your head. The difference between Cardboard and a true VR experience like the Oculus Rift or HTC Vive with positional tracking as well as rotation and tracked hand controllers just cannot be overstated.

Google cardboard came out over four years ago, really cutting edge stuff covering it now LOL

A lot of people think you need a gear VR or similar to try virtual reality, or even an Oculus or Vive. There's no harm in showing that VR is more accessible than people think.

My phone doesn't have a gyroscope sensor, just a magnet field sensor and an accelerometer :( so it's not good for VR. it's an Acer i bought for 160€ two years ago and a while back i resoldered its USB socket because the connection broke off. I think i have a 4 year old water damaged Huawei flagship without a battery cause that went semi-ballistic, i wonder if i can restore it just enough and give it some 18650s to do VR with it. 5" 1080p screen and gyro are benefits. It couldn't do VR when it was still good for more than 3 minutes because it would overheat and throttle, but with its back removed and battery relocated i can probably solve that issue. Among the interesting strands of technology i was following was CastAR headset designed by Jeri Ellsworth and Ben Krasnow et al, the company ran out of money and shut down, but rumour is, they're still developing it in private! It could be so much lighter than screen based devices, and work both for projective AR and with a suitable reflector shield as VR devices. Maybe you could knock on Jeri's door, she'd have a million electronics engineering and DIY manufacturing tales to tell.
