As a dude who in the olden times would not have enough money to buy a quest outright BUT definitely could pay 25 bucks a month, I can say that I would jump on that deal. That's basically the third of a cost of a AAA game these days.. Very easy to justify. I think this could be pretty huge.

I've owned every major console for the past 25 or so years, but never been a PC gamer. Only with the addition of the PSVR was I able to get in on VR and recently made the jump to the Quest 3. I love it. VR to me is like another experience for gaming. Sometimes I want to grab my Vita or Switch and play something on the go, sometimes I want an awesome AAA blockbuster game on my huge TV with the thundering surround sound and all the bells and whistles. And sometimes I want to immerse myself in another world with a good VR game. All completely different experiences, but all enjoyable for what they are. I'm all in on VR being a big part of my favorite hobby going forward.

I see that flatscreen being more comfortable if you're used to sitting but flatscreen and monitor/tv felt like an ancient technology now knowing that VR device can have multiple flatscreen floating around your environment. Not to mention doing all the action without having to memorize buttons or setting up a joystick/mouse sensitive is a true next level

The one problem I see is how many people will be unable to use it due to motion sickness and then be stuck with 2 years of payments. Also, a lot of people will get bored with it after 6 months and be stuck with $25 a month payments for the next 18 months. VR's biggest hurdle is people not being able to try before you buy.

one thing in the "must make concessions due to cost" explanation is that there is no One Size fits all when it comes to something that needs to conform to one's head and face. Even if Meta went all out on a more elaborate strap and facial interface it would add cost, and perhaps volume to the shipping product and it would still be uncomfortable for some or many users. Having a functional strap that adds very little to the manufacturing costs AND shipping weight can mean a lower overall price that can then be addressed by the end user who may prefer a halo strap vs a quest elite style one. I mention the shipping volume as a very real consideration because I have seen people ask why they just don't include an elite strap in the base package. Doing so would bring the box back to the size of there initial quest 1 or 2 size which is much larger than the quest 3 and has a knock on effect on the costs of packaging, shipping and storage for inventory surplus. Costs that tend not to be thought about by the end consumer and when you are talking about even fractions of a penny at the scale of millions of units that starts to be real money.

you are correct that a smart phone is in the "need" category. But not a $1000 to $1500 flagship phone from Apple or Samsung. In that situation, it's back in the want category because you could get a cheaper phone and save well over 500 dollars. I think the general public would rather spend that extra money on their everyday use phones than a VR headset they might only use a few hours a week.
@GreyMatterShades
@GreyMatterShades 18 күн бұрын
Yeah there's definitely an overlap between want and need when it comes to smart phones. Likewise with how frequently people upgrade them. But you're also right that if people are going to spend extra on a luxury, they're more inclined to do so on a device that's more central to their life. The contract/financing model of smart phones also helps a lot. Most people have no idea what their phone actually costs.
@GreyMatterShades
@GreyMatterShades 18 күн бұрын
That financing/service subscription plan could be a game changer. I've been calling on Sony to do that with PSVR 2 and PS+ Premium for a while now. The downside is that it's Meta that did it. I know a lot of people love them, but they're already so dominant in the industry and this will only expand their lead. Competition is a good thing, and despite the AVP, there still isn't really any actual substantial competition in the VR space. As for Meta opening up their software/OS so it can be used by competitors, that doesn't create competition, it offloads a burden from Meta. They lose money on their hardware and make it back on software. Companies selling XR hardware with Meta's software on it are doing Meta a favour. And anyone concerned about Meta's shady practices of harvesting data from their users won't be comforted by the notion that their software/OS will be on more and more devices. Hopefully other companies can adopt that financing/service business model and start gaining traction. The VR industry (and XR as s whole) desperately needs actual competition.

For me personally, VR has completely replaced flat-screen gaming, but I'm aware that I am in the vast minority. Most of the credit here probably goes to the presentation of technology in '94-'95, which made a huge impression on me as a kid. Based on the fact the Meta OS is open now. I think in 3 or 4 years we will see a good competition of supporting headsets. Prices going even lower, with multiple variations and innovations.
@GreyMatterShades
@GreyMatterShades 18 күн бұрын
But is it really competition if the software is the same. Any manufacturer using Meta's software on a "competing" headset is doing Meta two favours. 1) They're allowing Meta to monetize more customers through sales and data collecting, and 2) Meta can do it without needing to lose money on hardware themselves. Also make no mistake, it's Meta's monetization of software which allows them to sell their hardware at a loss. Other hardware manufacturers won't be able to monetize software to the same degree as Meta if they're using Meta's software (since at very least a cut of sales will be going to Meta). So other hardware manufacturers won't be able to sell their devices at the same sort of loss, and will therefore always be at a price disadvantage.
@ltonos9557
@ltonos9557 16 күн бұрын
@@GreyMatterShades I agree, meta still has the edge, but remember that any game developer will be able to create games, so not only meta monetizes on software. Also other headsets will automatically inherit a great amount of games in their library. Making them relevant without spending a dime on software. I think it is a win win situation. Let's say at some point Microsoft creates a headset. At the same time, some of their exclusive game developers launch some of the popular franchises for VR. Even if Meta has the head start, doesn't mean that other more experience game companies won't be able to compete. As far as I know, just because they share the same operating system, doesn't mean all games will be compatible with all headsets

I love these positive outlooks, I really do. And I am 100% there with you, it does feel like VR picked up the pace a lot in the past 12 months. I am currently in a bit of a slump, but that's mainly due to being overwhelmed by picking which game I want to play and sink my teeth into. But there were several just recently that I started playing and had to complete. So I really can't complain. Probably gonna go look into Hellsweeper, they just added back the bhaptics integration that broke with the full release. That might be fun.

I absolutely think ten years is a reasonable time horizon for XR to be fully mainstream. It’s sort of akin to what happened with Gen-X and Millennials making traditional flatscreen video games go mainstream. Once we (two whole generations types) had grown up with the technology, it was ubiquitous. Gen-Z and Alpha are also going to be the ones that ultimately normalize and mainstream XR and all its adjacent technologies and services.

Biggest issue with vr is the inability to play with friends who don’t have a headset yet. With racing games everyone from pc to console to vr can all play together with whatever they have. Every major game needs that kind of basic support. That’s how it goes mainstream like triple or ultra wide monitors.

On the Modded Flat screen side I am getting into now me and some friends got Mech Warrior 5 Mercenaries to run in VR and it is AWESOME play in a squad with your friends (some of which DON'T have VR). Ii you like Gian Robot This is a MUSTtry experience but the game does need a good amount of mods to be a TRUE Mech Warrior experience but being able to be IN the cockpit with VR is OUTSANDING!!! This is unfortunately the place VR is in still, the BEST bang for your buck is flat screen games that are Modded to support VR, Simulators are especially good because the don't need motion controls, so if you already have a HOTAS or Steering wheel you are SET!!! and the modders don't have to struggle with getting motion controls to to match with your character's actions on screen to you. If only AAA developers were as DEDICATED as the modders that are making these VR mods for games like Resident Evil for PC, GTA, CyberPunk 2077, and 7 Days To Die, we could have a world were you could take you Favorite Flat screen game and just throw on a headset be be able to jump INSIDE you characters SHOES and JUST PLAY the game you love with all jour frieneds whether they have a Headset or NOT

Thank you for acknowledging that psvr2 truly was a good monetary deal compared to pcvr & esp if you already own ps5. This meta quest 3s hopefully is a great price point while still having great quest 3 quality for casual gamers. We need less gamers to scoff at VR and its hard with low quality games so Ive been liking to see the few attempts at full games even if they dont always land. Meta and Playstation are great mediums to get more people involved

I don't think Meta Quest is the answer that you think it is for VR. First of all, Meta want games to be exclusive to the Quest platform, this hurts VR and limits the sale of games to just the Quest platform, so those of us that don't use Quest don't buy these games, where if they were on the other platforms we would be buying them. The reason I don't have a Quest is because it's face plate is just too small and when I have tried it, the IPD range didn't work for me, as I have and IPD of 75mm. I have not tried the Quest 3, I don't know anyone with one to test. I do own a Pimax 8KX and a PSVR2, both of these work for my IPD. I did have a Vive and a Vive Pro and these catered for 75mm IPD. I did try the Vive Pro 2 and the HP Reverb G2, both of these did not work for me, there IPD range was not large enough, and the Reverb G2 face plate was far too narrow and uncomfortable.

@hughmac7423 you are underselling the quest my a large margin. The vast majority of vr games would not be profitable without the quest and it makes up roughly 90% of the games sales. Exclusives are a part of the game industry for better or worse. The limit to sales here is minimal though

Quest is open to Steam VR, applab, sidequest, gamepass, android emulators, along with native and rift games. They're quite non restrictive, especially compared to Sony and the PSVR, which is tied to one ecosystem currently. Most games on Quest are not exclusive. Meta selling products at a loss and giving a lot of bang for your buck is doing a lot for VR. The Valve Index is old and outdated and still being sold full price for a grand. And I also found the Quest 3 faceplates smaller size uncomfortable, since its too curvy. I bought an adjustable aftermarket faceplate and that helped a lot.
@JimmyNuisance
@JimmyNuisance 18 күн бұрын
Meta wants exclusives, but they are also giving away their OS so any other manufacturer of headsets out there can get access to those exclusives, most likely, by adopting Meta OS. Exclusives aren't as big of a deal when it turns into a Windows situation. There are windows exclusive games, but no one cares, because Windows is what 95% of gamers use. Meta OS seems destined to be the Windows of VR. It's not so much of an exclusive if everyone gets it.

The Quest 3 hit most of the XR check marks and does them standalone, and at a price point that middle class people would be generally willing to pay. It is NOT the best at anyone one thing, but because it does do *most* things, I will die on a hill defending that the Quest 3 is the most VERSATILE headset on the market.

This seems like a fairly based take, maybe a bit superficial, but about as deep as the general audience is here for. "Vr" has so much baggage to shake, some legit, mostly inappropriate, expectations of a nacent technology/industry. Also, the Zuck pushing an inorganic"Metsverse" way too early and messaging"productivity" (extremely limited use cases) mixed in recreation.

The subscription plan approach through possibly a phone company is what I was saying was going to be the only way that the Apple Vision Pro would be a success. I guess the iPhone people didn’t mention that to them. Somehow Zuckerberg saw it before them. Should have been a no-brainer for Apple since they already have ties with the phone companies. I don’t know how Zuckerberg is going to do it (face book?)but still a good idea.😈

No one calls me or texts me because I'm a lonely &%$# and I can't even use it where I spend most of my time (at work in my office) because I lack cell service. It's honestly completely useless to me. Actually. been thinking about disconnecting my service because the only calls that I do get are scam calls. Also on a side note, I was pretty underwhelmed with the AVP. I tried it the day it came out. I really hope that is not what top end VR is. I was expecting more from Varjo or Pimax? Both of which I have not tried.

Great points. But it's not all hype when people say "VR is the best". I still feel that way, even after about 7 years of it. To me VR is just so much more immersive, and that's the whole point of games for me. Interactivity and immersion. If "best" meant max realism in graphics with the highest production quality, while staring at a screen the whole time, we'd all just watch movies. If I want to be immersed in a virtual world, I used to play flat games, but now I just go straight to VR almost every time.

you can't use some form of Libre office, at the same time as your messenger and cell feed. So meta is really keeping us from multitasking google play apps, on purpose. the q2 could do multiple speadsheets, a couple word dox, a cell link, and mssgr all athe same time in diff windows they are purposefully limiting its usability. I am so glad the vision finally is here would never buy an apple product but wham 6 months later meta is finally fixing the os why do I still not have control over the shortcuts and windows I want before me at the start?? there's room for all 10 of my favorite things why do I have to look at the meta crap. What VR needs most is software thats not overhyped garbage as most games that come out lately. I can't remember a game in the past time that hooked me or was worth the time. Most devs don't see VRs true potential, the way mechanics should be designed and so on. So as long as we don't get a change there they can make hardware as much as they want to gather dust.
