As a huge VR nerd, I have some major suggestions. 1. Skip airlink/link cable, the compression used by Meta is frankly just terrible. Steamlink is quite good, and makes Steam VR work with little to no hassle, but Virtual Desktop is the cream of the crop, although it has a bit of a ‘learning curve’. AV1 encoding or 10 bit H.265 at higher bitrates are incredible on VD. 2. Get a dedicated router/AP just for VR, preferable a wifi 6E router. As much as it is a meme, the minions wifi 6E AP is the best bang for your buck in this department, nothing comes close price to performance wise. A stable, strong, fast connection only for VR makes a major difference. 3. If you liked Half Life Alyx, give Boneworks a try! It’ll probably make you pretty sick our first time playing it, but it is probably the best demonstration of what VR is capable of gameplay wise. No idea if you’ll read this, but hope you give it a shot! Love what you do, and it’d be cool to see how much your experience improves when not trying to do things the ‘Meta intended way’

What about Steam Link as an alternative if you can't afford Virtual Desktop, is it that worth? Need to know before I buy a dedicated router for this thing, genuine questions as I'm finally coming from a RiftS to a Quest3 and Steam Link has been okay other than my wifi being shit

@@DreamyKiley it has it's own issues, not best quality stream but it works better than the quest link app. Even on quest 2 the difference between steam and Virtual Desktop is very noticeable. Bobo ve makes cheaper elite straps. Well, it was cheaper than the original one for my Quest 2 anyway, hopefully the same is true for the 3. Also, at least with the one I’ve got, there’s an optional fan to make air flow between the Quest and face, avoiding fogging and keeping heat under control. Love that thing lmao

It makes sense that someone with a 4k display would think it doesn't look the best but for people used to 1080, the quest looks just fine. It's not meant to be "the best headset in the world" but it's good for people looking to get into the space. You have a point. Most tech KZbinrs eventually get out of touch once they have access to such high tech. Though, Dawid is still fun to watch. I think OptimumTech is good, too. He didn't say many negatives about VR sim racing but loves it. He gave up 2 of his expensive monitors to run VR only.

I've been playing games in 4k for around 10 years (since the r9 290x) and personally I think the quest 3 looks great. We have to remember this thing is running an arm cpu, not a rtx 4090. The performance they squeeze out of it is impressive and the 3d aspect of it takes away from it not having 4k levels of detail.

The thing is, I don’t think the headset is the issue. Like I said, Half life Alyx looks amazing. So it’s clearly capable of producing awesome visuals. It’s just really difficult to get stuff to look good in VR. But you’re right, everyone is different. I just happen to be very sensitive to pixel density issues, and VR literally shoves it in your face.

Assetto Corsa doesnt actually, completely look like ass, even though its old, if you drive a track that was officially included in the game, rather than choosing a modded track, and crank up the settings, it should make a decent difference in experience. Official tracks on AC are more detailed, whereas modded tracks are just scale replicas with not alot of work put into the little details.

It's funny though that he had all of those problems with Quest Link, I'm using cheapo USB3 cable for it and never had those issues. Maybe he forgot to set resolution/refresh rate in Quest app in the first place? That could explain pixely look as it defaults to like 60/70% of native res.

The struggle is real with link cables on the quest 2 for pcvr. Just figuring out what cable to get, first time set up and launching it every time is cumbersome. Although I do think it's worth it just to play Alyx and Skyrim VR. However, It's a so much better experience using it as a stand alone VR headset with quest games. Just put it in and go and it just works great for games like Beat Saber, Asgard's Wrath 2 and Till you fall.

My favourite things in VR is Projects Cars 2, Elite Dangerous and Microsoft Flight sim. I have been flying in Elite in VR since 2016 when I was a first wave recipient of the HTC Vive. Fun fact, that rig from 2016 still runs with the vive, we use it for work out stuff now when its too cold. hehe. old stuff like beat saber, space pirate trainer, synth riders etc. Another fun fact, the Vive, despite its resolution and its weight, I still find enjoyable to use, its also extraordinarily reliable. That system has been running for as long as it has, and i've never had to fuss with it or reinstall windows because i couldn't get something in VR to work right. Setting up the Vive took 10 minutes and its been flawless for almost 10 years. My other headsets though, that i use on more powerful machines, yeah they've been a little fiddly but I've got it down to a pretty good science by now :) Best of luck with your VR endeavors Dawid!

I am no fan of Zuckerburg or Meta (FB), however I'll enthusiastically say the Quest 3 is a step in evolution above the Index. So much so that I've mothballed my Index and removed the lighthouses from my play space. The Index was great in its time, and certainly an improvement over the HTC Vive. However, there were always little technical issues with my Index and I was limited to a specific location to play in. The resolution improvement, portability, and compatibility with PC Steam games made it easy to put away my Index permanently. Beyond that, the continuous stream of improvements to features is very nice. 'Always felt like the Vive and Index were like buying a mousepad. Never any enhancements or updates.

Yes, it quite literally get's better buying a headset that costs 8x as much. Do you need that tho, no. This is all subjective and all down to the user and their needs. Should people buy the vision pro, not really.

though, for simracing i'd probably still suggest a displayport wired headset like the psvr2 or the pimax crystal. the quest streams video data in a compressed h264, h265 or av1 video stream over USB or Wi-Fi which is why there's some artifacting, in most games it's not noticeable but simracing games are a lot faster so it's more noticeable

I've been playing and making VR content for a couple of years now, and you tend to just get used to how things look in VR. Just be glad you didn't start on a quest 2, it's not a bad headset by any means, but your complaints about the 3 would have been magnified by the lenses the quest 2 uses. I'm almost 50 years old, and the promise of VR that was fed to me as a child is finally here and it's pretty damn good right now for what it is.

If you want to play Assetto Corsa at its best, let alone trying to play it in VR, you MUST have Content Manager, Custom Shaders Patch, and good track mods or just the stock tracks. As someone who recently got in VR with the Quest 3 for PCVR, I can echo a few points others have said. Rather than the link cable, if you can get at least a Wifi6 router try Virtual Desktop. I got a used tri-band wifi 6 router for pretty cheap so one 5ghz channel is dedicated to the headset and I can play wirelessly from a PC and router not even in the same room flawlessly. I use a 1440p ultrawide and have had few complaints on visual clarity thus far, especially considering my PC is on a different floor entirely. I also went the Bobovr S3 headstrap and it is a massive difference. Went from barely being able to play for 30 minutes in a more intensive game due to face pressure to a couple hours consistently.

People are recommending Bobo's battery strap, as they often do, but I'm gonna throw in my vote for a lesser-known strap: Binbok. For starters: 1) The battery is integrated into the headstrap, it doesn't look like a sparrow perched on the back of your strap like Bobo's. I actually didn't know it had a battery at first! 2) It's designed for the Quest 3, so it's able to keep your headset charged until it runs out. 3) The strap isn't halo-style. I know, halo straps are comfortable, but the reasons they're comfortable is also why the headset falls off when you're not standing perfectly upright. 4) It's higher capacity than the Bobo battery

Getting those prescription inserts was a really good first step. Afterwards getting a strap from a company that actually knows what VR is (ie not Razer!) is a must. Finally as per what everyone else is saying getting a dedicated 5ghz WiFi 6 or 6e router (there was even 50 dollar routers which are perfect for this) and finally try pretty much any other wireless VR program! So for PCVR I use my Valve index, sure it's not the same quality as the Quest 3, but it just works. You need a good router with Virtual Desktop to get decent PCVR and it still won't be a wired experience. There are also options to keep the cable out of the way.

If you didn’t like the pcvr experience as much as you hoped for it could come down to oculus’s bad compression quality. I have compared my quest 2 and quest 3 to an old htc Vive. The difference is night and day to say the least. Rendering at native resolution (without out compression) or higher gives a much better experience. That’s at least what I found.

What really astonishes me is that, like you said, it's a big ass pain to setup vr and actually have it run well. As others have said, the picture quality is because of OL Codec, I saw you did set the Bitrate to Max without dynamic settings, which is a best practice. But I'd suggest: 1. Get VD and (if your gpu is recent) use 10bit AV1 codec for best picture quality. Also, depending on GPU (a 4090 is enough for it) try to use 120hz when you're using a dedicated AP with wifi 6. Also make sure that upscaling isn't enabled in steam vr and leave resolution to the standard aswell. You won't really need upscaling when using AV1 10Bit. 2. Get a wifi 6 AP or router (unifi AP 6 Pro for big spenders and slate ax wifi 6 for relatively budget option). You also need to choose how you want to stream. You can if possible just uplink the AP or router and use it like that but if LAN isn't an option for you you can still use the slate ax as an AP and uplink it to the pc. You won't have internet on the quest OS but you can switch networks when you need internet. The slate ax works very well in that case (tested it myself) but I did end up getting the unifi ap 6 pro and using cable channels on the wall to uplink it and my pc via Lan 3. When using wifi for streaming it's imperative that the wifi isn't congested apps like wifi analyzer can check your wifi coverage, usage of channels and so on. You need to use a free wifi channel, maybe if possible use DFS channels (if you're not close to an airport since they use these frequencies) as they are rarely used. It's also important to stick to the ap being only for VR. You can create a separate SSID network just for VR and just used by the AP in question to have no network traffic other than VR 4. The strap you got is a good choice, I'd however suggest to get a aftermarket elite strap for about 20 euros since the quest elite strap is way overpriced. Also suggest to get face covers with leather to be able to resell it if needed since the stock fabric face interface gets smelly fast, it'll also inflame your face if your skin is sensitive. I got a plastic replica of the quest face interface with velcro leather pads and it also was around 20 Euros. My stock face interface setting dial for the distance from display to face also broke 1st day (on one side) and it also seems to be very finicky. The aftermarket one doesn't have a setting, it's straight up the closest to your face as you can get (which is important to maximize FOV) 5. As for games, try bone works or bonelab, it's the best vr game out there. Other sword fighting games also work well in vr.
