Yay for GURPS. :) It's a fantastically elegant and scalable system, but almost universally misunderstood.

I aim to correct that in myself. I played once in college with a poor GM and it no doubt colored my perception.

ThuleanPerspective I'd put my money on failing memory :P ... However, there is not a lot of differences between versions. The latest release is basically a less complicated and more streamlined version of previous editions, which incorporates many of the house rules people played with.

Runeslinger The mistake most new players make with GURPS is they get this comprehensive toolbox system and think they have to use everything... First, you decide on the style of game you want, then you only use the system elements that facilitate it. I'm running a few GURPS games at the moment and two of those are at different ends of the spectrum. One is a very tactical simulation, gritty, rules heavy, played on the grid with lots of rolling etc. The other is a fast paced, mostly narrative, rules light, theatre of the mind game. In a single game session I will often switch styles to suit the narrative. I started out in the hobby playing Palladium, MERP, Classic Traveller and Shadowrun. Over the years those games/settings slowly transformed to use GURPS and now I use the system for everything.

TheRonnke Although timing was a key factor, my problem with GURPS has really been that it is generic, and not all generic systems are created equally. As I feel system has an impact on the experience of play, using a toolkit is not my preferred approach. I am in the mood now to evaluate its gameplay and have an overabundance of campaign ideas on the back burner to pair with it. We'll see how it goes~

Hi. You mentioned that you would like to see an Alien game based around the second film. Wonder if you have ever heard about the Alien game system put out long ago by Leading Edge Games? It actually was exactly that, based around the second film, lots of photos from the film, quotes, and a good deal of info on the Alien universe that is really very interesting. I have one copy of it here that I bought ages ago. A friend of mine I used to know once tried running it for a small group but he had trouble with the mechanics and couldn't work it out in the short amount of time we had then. I'd look into that if you have not yet. Leading Edge Games is probably best known for the Living Steel game. Also, simply for the the astounding art and imagination, I would mention an older game called Skyrealms of Jorune. I used to see those adverts in Dragon mag back in the day and when time passed and life changed I managed to get a couple copies of the rules system and a few of the adventure mods which are getting more and more difficult to get. There is a place online though called Noble Knight Games and they have a very, very extensive supply of new and out of print games.

I know Noble Knight, and their magnificent, layers of wrapping paper, very well. ;) I have played the Alien game, actually, and you are right about its evocative style. I don't have it, though. In the clip, I am talking about running it my own way, for fun. It's a shame the IP hasn't been kept in print. Skyrealms of Jorune is one I only know by reputation. Have you tried playing it?

Runeslinger Skyrealms of Jorune unfortunately is something I never have had the chance to run with anyone so far. By the time I had gotten ahold of it the gaming group I had in my youth was long gone. The sporadic gamers after that group were always caught up with something and not people I ended up staying around with long term. But Skyrealms is high on my list of games I'd like to run. The world is imaginative and looks like something I could grow into a good campaign.

Great list runeslinger, Blue planet is something I have never heard of! So many games I am finding out through these videoes I didnt know about. I also like your idea of running games based on IP's you like. I would do a version of "The Thing" not original but a good one. And I would love to design a mass effect RPG if bioware were in a giving mood ;)

There is a very good fan made RPG for Mass Effect. It's made for D6 system.

Let me know if you try Blue Planet.

I forgot that I filmed that other video about games no one else likes to play. hehe. I thought Mouse Guard was an alright system to play (though it was a bit different than I was used to). Me and Burning Wheel didn't see eye to eye, but I wonder if Torchbearer would be alright for me? hmm. I think I played a 1-shot of Hero and GURPS but I'm fuzzy on the details. Aliens as a game, 1-shot, or campaign would be a lot of fun. I think I could use BRP for that with some extras bolted on.

Runeslinger!! Obviously its 'the verse' telling you that you need to create this RPG!! The higher ups loaded a revolutionary war musket with a golden idea and rammed it down with some inspiration, walked up behind you and shot you point blank in the coconut. They don't do that unless its meant to be. Furthermore game creation can be a ton of fun. So get to crackin'. You're in a unique position due to your wide and in-depth knowledge of RPGs to really turn this idea into a reality: a game that gets published and that gamers will play for years to come.
