Personal update: I’ve recently decided to take a big leap of faith and take time off from university to do youtube full time! (so I’ll be doing my best to upload more frequently than before xD) I’ve opened up a patreon in case you'd like to help me not completely disappoint my parents! If not no worries though! If you could like this video or subscribe, that would mean a lot to me too! Thank you so much

But I still love how chill you equally sound in every languages. There is no "personality change" as some people do when switching languages. Volunteering as an English teacher in Taiwan is so cool. Couple of questions if you don't mind me asking: 1. When did you start learning languages? 2. How did you do it, and what resources do you recommend? (I'm leaning Korean and Japanese) 3. How many hours a day do you practice? 4. Did you learn multiple languages at the same time?
@TigerinTranslation2 ай бұрын
1I started learning Japanese in 2014, Chinese in 2021, and Korean 2023! 2mmm I'm planning to make a more in depth guide later, but I basically learned basic grammar via textbooks then went and tried to talk with natives a lot to practice what I learned! 3Not many actually haha it varied from 3 hours a week to like 5 hours a day haha It just depends on what was going on in my life at the time, but so long as u can be consistent with it even like just 1 or 2 hours a week will be helpful for sure! 4I usually would focus on one language until I became conversational (could talk with a native for 3+hours) then would work on a new language while practice my other language just by chatting with friends! Hope this helps and best of luck my friend!^^

@@TigerinTranslation Love the thorough answer, thank you so much! You've really impressed and inspired me :)) Have a great weekend!

I will put down here a couple of my personal recommendations: 1) Learn the grammar! There are lots of resources for many languages, although sometimes you just have to make do with some weird reference grammar full of technicalities that is meant for linguists and not learners. 2) Focus on vocabulary. The biggest hurdle in learning languages is learning enough vacabulary. To truly be like a native you should know at least like 5k words, although usually natives tend to understand over 10k (it gets easier with derivation and there isn't one definition for every word). 2.1) To learn the vocabulary, listen! Watch videos or listen to whatever in the language. Sing the language's songs. This will help you train your brain into picking up the important sounds, although it can be very depressing if you do not understand much. 2.2) write in the language. You can absolutely find spare time, even just 1 minute, to write down a silly sentence in the language you're learning. Write by hand, keep a diary or something, and you will find yourself learning a ton. 3) use Anki or something similar for vocabulary. It doesn't even need to be used as it is meant to, just use it as an algorithm to show you words to remember. I have been using it for Mandarin Chinese to practice characters, having the pronounciation and meaning in front so that I then know which character I have to write. 4) Don't be afraid to say silly things. You will make mistakes, and that does not matter. My Chinese teacher asked me "这是[place]大学吗?" (is this [place]'s university?) and I replied "I don't know", because I had somehow interpreted it as “[place]大学在哪儿?” (where is [place]'s university?). (not gonna doxx myself sorry) 5) You can, for some languages, use AI to have a conversation partner that doesn't care about simple sentences. I used chatGPT to practice my Latin, as it could provide me with lots of simple sentences to translate when I needed that kind of practice. Large language models can provide you with translation exercises at any moment, although they can't be fully trusted with knowledge. If you're planning on learning a limitedly spoken language, like Ket, you cannot trust them, so yoy might have to limit their usage to the generation of exercises that you won't easily be able to correct. In conclusion, you have to use the language. If possible, check a pronounciation guide first and foremost, as old habits hardly die, so you must get a decent pronounciation immediately, even if you have to speak very slowly. My tongue spent a month and a half trying to not be against Mandarin pronounciation (it still complained, though not as much).

Now, for more language specific advice. You can, absolutely, learn both Korean and Japanese at once. They are such different languages that you really can't get too confused. Both of them are often explained very poorly, so this is one of the cases in which I would recommend trying to find a reference grammar for both of them. You don't necessarily need to read it in depth (I had found a Japanese reference grammar of over 1k pages), but you should still skim it to get a vague idea of the full picture, and keep it around whenever you need a more detailed explanation (which could happen with 'wa' and 'ga' in Japanese, because they are very often both called subject markers when that's not really the case). To reach fluency you do not need to study hours upon hours every day, but you need to be consistent. At the beginning you will need more time to internalise concepts, but what is most important is getting used to the language. Use it as much as you can. Do you know only the noun for "home"? Instead of saying "I'm going home", say it in your target language.

The secret is practice. To get a good grasp of a language (without having a really good memory and being into linguistics) you could very well need over a year. And by a good grasp I mean being able to string together simple sentences in a mildly natural way. Language fluency takes at least 2 years. But don't worry! Listening, writing, reading, and speaking all help. Writing down what you have achieved over time could be a very good thing for your motivation, as it is really hard to track progress normally. It was really nice for me to know that after a month of Chinese I knew over 100 characters and some structures. It didn't feel like I wasted my time.
