FUN FACT: The first 2 minutes of this scene was filmed at high speed (slow motion) to give the materializing muses an ethereal appearance; so everything flows softly and gently. But it's not the normal slow motion speed of 96 frames per second, it's ever so slight - maybe 48 or 32 fps. It also means that the music playback on the set had to be sped-up by the same amount, so the dancers could remain in time with the beat.

The entire production has been so downplayed for years; to my mind the opus (in it's entirety) could easily be considered Keats' Grecian Urn choreographed and put to music. (there are several other parallel themes as well)

Yeh, I thought it ironic that the broadway production joked about how cheesy Xanadu was, and while saying they were making a respectable production, made it cheesier. That said, loved the inclusion of "Strange Magic" by ELO and "Have you ever been Mellow" by Olivia to the story.

I don't know what the Broadway production did with this but they clearly missed the point: this is one of the most erotic scenes in popular cinema and should be greeted without imposed irony: nine gorgeous women in sensual display seemingly wearing one dress in eight variations (back when a dress could show relatively little but the woman moving within it could turn it into something to stop your heart). There's an air of a Bob Guccione Penthouse shoot here, but things remain chaste. There's a sense that you are watching a 'Paper Moon' greeting card or the airbrushed side of a van become flesh. Innocence and up front sexuality (note the ambiguous Sapphic hints) mixed up with slit scan pastel neon. This is possibly the one 'stand alone' from 'Xanadu' that enjoys its own contained authority. And Robert Abel's once maligned and 'simplistic' effects reveal themselves to be a retro-aesthetic all their own (which many have aped in the intervening decades).
