I almost passed this video by because of the age of Mr. Jussen. I am delighted I did listen to him play because it is one of the best, if not the best performances I have heard of this piece. I am an old man now and I've always had an opinion that the performer's age is essential to the depth of emotion that Brahms composed. I know have a different opinion. If there are "old souls" in our world, this young man is one. I performed this on my senior recital in college and have listened to many performances over my lifetime. This is in the top 3 if not number 1. I don't know what to say except if you listen and are moved to tears by a performance, you have accomplished greatness in art. I was indeed moved by this, and I look forward to hearing more from him and his talented brother. Thank you for posting!

I very much agree, having heard several interpretations, this one is fitting of a master pianist.
@classicallpvault7 ай бұрын
With all due respect, but you're taking this performance way too much as proof of mysticism you seem to believe in. This performance is good, mostly, because the performer knows how to analyse the score of it and knows how to practice what Brahms wrote down. There's one really massive flaw in this performance which I really don't understand. 0:47. A key change and a start of a different segment, where previous phrases end. It's played through like it's insignificant. No slight slow-down in between, no articulation. At an intersection of 2 different segments of the piece. I think this was most likely a slip of mind relating to practicing the piece in segments and the crossover between the 2 being overlooked. Not anything at the detriment of Arthur Jussen, these things happen regularly in live performances but I just see them as evidence that even pros should still have notes in front of them.
@genehowell51977 ай бұрын
@@classicallpvault I totally agree with you on the miss at 0.47 that is a big connection in the overall structure and it was missed. That is a clear indication of youth and will come with more age and maturity. I do disagree with you on having notes in front of you in a performance. There are many performers who would benefit from notes, but there are many to which it is a detriment to performing. I think if you have it memorized you can concentrate on the overall sound and then notes can become a distraction. But it has to be locked in memorization, which many are capable of, and some struggle with. Everyone's talent has strengths and weaknesses, and that's what makes each performance their own. And it is rare to have a perfect performance, and if asked most performers would say there was something they did that could have been better.

Never a better recorded performance, for sure. Here is utter abandon, but kept under the very constraints Brahms composed into his scores. I somehow believe only Clara Schumann, schooled by her father in the same highly disciplined technique we witness here, could have equalled--perhaps did equal on stage or before her husband and Johannes at home--Arthur's offering. I think sometimes we get too invested in analyzing and comparing performers/performances of this beautiful music, and we completely miss the point. The reason Brahms wrote this was to tell us a story, to entertain both the audience and the performer. So what if he didn't follow the notes exactly as Brahms would have? Does that really make this performance any less beautiful? As someone who has less than a fraction of this young man's talent, I'm content to just listen and enjoy.

I play this piece , as does a friend, who has converted me to this slower tempo. He reminded me of Brahms the contrapuntalist, and the counterpoint is dense here. Slower allows sonorities to, bloom, too. I'm so glad I ran across this video. As throwcats mentions, too, the soft dynamic range is well chosen and manages to be rich. Nice piano and a resonant room adds to it. This might be my favorite 118/2 on youtube. Or anywhere. Now I think I'll practice.
