Every time in your videos you say the word yawn, I get an irresistible urge to yawn. I can't help it, it's a reflex. :D By the way your Cher imitation was uncanny! That is exactly how she sounds! I have her facial structure and nasality (and I know she hates her own voice as well) so I've used the same technique to not sound as nasal or raspy as in my natural position - but I am told I sound too dark and muffled, and it's not pretty. I love singing alto jazz songs and aim for a husky vibe.. Your videos are helping me to locate the appropriate larynx, soft palate, throat and mouth. Thank you!
@Victoria-Victorious3 жыл бұрын
If you sound too dark and muffled, your tongue is probably being pushed down. This will make you sound muffled and woofy every time.
@korento30003 жыл бұрын
@@Victoria-Victorious Wow I never realised that! But you're right, my tongue kind of naturally goes down when I sing. As I write I am trying to sing low, and hold my tongue in a neutral middle position - but it's so hard! Thank you once again, you're an amazing teacher!

My real question is when I'm singing, does I need to follow the tone of the song ? Because people have different tones of voices and singing technique right? What is the difference of following the tone of that song vs on how you will sing it with your voice?

I was under the impression open throat was just habit built by exercising. But you actually have to regulate it. How about the swallowing muscles under your chin? Should they move? And how wide should we do exercises with mum and yawn?
@Victoria-Victorious4 жыл бұрын
The degree of open throat does eventually become built it with practice! The swallowing muscles are the constrictor muscles and should not be used in singing. If your throat gets tight while singing, I have a couple of videos on the tight throat. Throat Tension While Singing? BEST EXERCISE HERE! kzbin.info/www/bejne/fKqWn6iZeJZ6gbc As far as how open (yawn) for mum, I recommend neutral for most singers, as in the beginning of a yawn.

Thank you very much for these videos on technique. I appreciate how much detail you go into, and that you point us to relevant detail videos from the introductory ones. I've always done what came naturally when singing, but I'm running into the limits of what I can do that way. I'm running into the problem that my low notes have too open a throat, and moving from mixed register to low and back is very difficult. I think making my low notes less like that would make the first passagio a lot easier. I'm having difficulty making my low notes less yawny and open throat, and going up and down is very unstable. Is this just a matter of practicing 'yeah yeah yeah' over the break and on the low notes a lot? Or am I missing something?
@jakecaine44904 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much for your videos Victoria! They are so helpful! I just wanted to ask, should I keep the soft palate raised at all times when singing? I have been doing this recently and although the sound improves, singing itself becomes very strenuous! Or is that supposed to happen? Thanks again.
@Victoria-Victorious4 жыл бұрын
You are probably overdoing it if it becomes strenuous. You don't want to over-open. Also, the soft palate is not as arched in pop singing, or sometimes not at all, depending on the sound you want. You can start with speaking exercises (like sirens)around the pitches, like I do in a lot of my videos.

There is no such thing as too much open throat when singing high notes, your throat should be as open as possible right?

As I go higher I feel it gets kind of a rotten apple sound as if was nasal and gets stuck there - is it because subconsciously tensing throat or not pushing enough from diaphragm?

So to be able to create resonance I have to practice open throat singing?
@Victoria-Victorious3 жыл бұрын
It all depends on what kind of sound you want. If you want more fullness, depth and color, the throat is the largest resonator. However, there is a such thing as being too open for the style.
