The Great Mind also runs counter to the way we evolved to make collective decisions as small, intimate groups. Neither is natural but both are useful methods that should be synthesized to minimize both of their faults.

Here's my "reasoning" of the result of that magician experiment: (1) People were forced to make a binary choice. It might have been that they wanted to work with neither, or both. (2) The experiment was more akin to "finding excuse" than finding reason, when almost zero information apart from a photo was available. (3) These people might have considered both pros and cons for selecting each photo. You asked for the pros, then they would give you only the pros.

Imagine a world where everyone thinks the same way, always agrees, and sees things from the same angle. Sounds peaceful, right? Not quite. This, in a nutshell, is the paradox of unanimity: sometimes, more agreement can actually mean less certainty. While we tend to trust decisions everyone supports, the truth is, the chances of everyone being truly independent and correct are surprisingly low. Why? Because we're human, and shared biases, groupthink, and even emotional contagion can easily sway everyone in the same direction, even if it's wrong. This doesn't mean every viewpoint needs to be extreme or completely different. But in ambiguous situations, where right and wrong aren't clear-cut, diversity of thought is crucial. It's like a puzzle: the more perspectives you have, the better chance you have of seeing the whole picture and finding the right solution. Here's the catch: blindly following the majority can be dangerous. Think about how easily rumors spread, even if they're untrue. In complex moral decisions, groupthink can lead to mass delusion, where everyone believes something is right simply because everyone else does. This can have serious consequences, hindering our ability to distinguish right from wrong and leading to harmful choices. So, the next time you encounter a situation where everyone seems to agree, remember the paradox of unanimity. Don't be afraid to ask questions, challenge assumptions, and see things from different angles. It might be uncomfortable, but it could also save us from making regrettable choices and pave the way for a more nuanced and just society.

I love the endings to these videos. I find them inspirational to change wrong things to make them better. The most taxing question on the mind is if what we do now will benefit or hurt the future. What would historians find? What would future generations learn about us and what we right now did? Every action will be watched by our children 100 years later. That’s hard to think about, it inspires me as a person to improve people’s life’s and to show our children that we were good people. We can’t be self centered all of the time. As a collective society we need to help and take care of people around us and ourselves, but that’s hard, but it can be done. For us, for the future, for the world.

7:39 me and my friend had almost this exact same discussion the other day about something else. I didn't want to do something and I gave a reason which he was able easily counter until I put in the work to figure out a good enough reason. It mainly happened because I didn't realize he was quite as passionate about it, nor just how lazy I was feeling about the idea. I could've just said no and thats final, but it would've made my friend upset with me for a while, so socially you need powers of reasoning.

I greatly appreciate the notion that we can not just appreciate the knowledge imparted to us by "classic" notions of debate, but that we ourselves might one day become that ancient teacher to our decedents. Where most channels skirt the actual questions they pose, few expend the energy to delve into them properly. Just kidding after reading the comments I realize that 99% of people here are still developing basic listening and comprehension. Maybe the real problem is human stupidity and self-righteousness.

It also makes me think how in law school a professor might ask you for an answer and then when you give it they ask why do you think that. You get some reason but there’s often several levels where you dig deeper and probe more until you get to a point where either you can’t explain why you came to a conclusion or you’ve addressed enough of the uncertainty that digging deeper would not add much value.

@Blaireth

@@InfamousTub I have to point out--that's not a basis of evidence it's just a claim. The scientific consensus is that the sun has only about a fifteenth of a percent change in its radiation on Earth in just an 11 year cycle, and that its role in climate change is small. Human history on Earth is a mote compared to the existence of the Sun--its changes are minor over our lifetimes. Meanwhile our atmosphere is much more subject to change in gas composition. Most all greenhouse gas emissions in the atmosphere are a result of human activity since the Industrial Revolution. And think about it--it's not just transportation, it's heating and AC, waste in landfills, electricity, deforestation on a massive scale. Do you believe these things have no chemical output or effect on their surroundings, especially globally over 150 years? Even just cement--the production of cement emits so much CO and sulphur dioxide that pollute the air. Not just that, but cement magnifies heat on hot days. Think of how ubiquitous cement alone is (let alone all the rest of human industry inextricable from emissions) and how often it's produced. You're likely in a building now (or will be today) that is constructed with cement. Think of the massive distribution of that material alone whose production is mostly powered by fossil fuels. That's just one of the many vicious cycles that factor into the heating of the atmosphere. There's also the Albedo Effect defined by the ice at the poles normally reflecting 90% of solar radiation now melting more and more each year, leaving dark water that absorbs that heat instead. The atmosphere is much more delicate than you may think and scientists have numerous studies to prove it. Who do you think is more likely to lie to you about the reality of climate change? Fossil fuel CEOs whose main legal obligation is constant profit growth and the politicians whose campaigns they fund? Or scientists who've devoted their lives to studying the environment?

I mean is it worth it? Getting married is just spending the rest of your life with another human being in your house an- (4 hours later) -o that is why that the mind is secretly controlling your actions along with your future and that aliens may be involved aswell.

I want to congratulate Michael on this incredible script: so dense and yet flows like poetry. This was the most profound video he has ever made and would be a genuine benefit to anyone who watches till the end.

i don't think it is the best (if only the "best" doesn't means "fresh"), but what you did said about poetry - that's what i found a yreat metaphor of what i perceive. )

I'd argue that he excels at making dense scripts flow like poetry, I loved this video, but he has many just as good.

I love how Michael can talk about a concept that every knows but not many people truly understand the depth of. He then takes you there in ten minutes, makes you question everything you know and then in another ten he talks about why eggplants are called eggplants it’s our yearly free acid trip.
