I saw this lineup play at the North Sea Jazz Festival in the Hague, together with my father back in '82 I think. They played in the Prince Willem Alexander Hall (since 30th April 2013 Willem Alexander became the King of the Netherlands). All these years I saved a drumstick of Tony Williams he played with. It was great.

Well, that's Organic Real Jazz of the highest degree. Can't beat youthful brilliance; can you? Tony, Ron, Herbie as well as young Branford and Wynton - - - what a line up? And Wynton was winning Down Beat Polls in both the Classical and Organic Real Jazz genres. Great post!

I saw this lineup play in LA in around 1982 or so. Mind blowing.

This is when mostly everyone can dig Wynton. Now he's stuck in New Orleans (not saying that's bad, love Louis, but you gotta look bad and forward).

Wynton stuck in Orleans is most genial and sophisticated than 100% of "avantgarde" jazzmen. Your comentary reminds me people saying Oscar Peterson is dated. This means > insanity ad extremum.

Hey can you post this entire concert.. There's a song on it right after Herbie Introduces everyone and I have NO CLUE what that tune is called. Its pretty mellow but amazing...
@MansaThaGreat3 жыл бұрын
The song is Sister Cheryl by Tony Williams

what just happened at 3:50? some kind of rhythm change on half the band, the other half maintain their swing and then they return at the exact same rhythm later on at 4:20. how the hell did they do that?

I'm somewhat suprised that Herbie worked with Wynton at that time because of then Herbie's funky and electronic music, although he did zigzag through acoustic and electric, and Wynton was strongly against electric and avant jazz.

originally it meant Very Special One time Project. It was meant for only one concert at the Newport Jazz Festival but after the tremendos success they kept doing concerts and tours.
