VSS wire on a 4th gen 4runner?

Just trying to help people who, like me, were a bit stressed about finding this VSS wire and getting everything hooked up properly. We'll also go over some of the fine details in getting your Apple CarPlay or Android Auto head unit up and running.
If you have any other questions about this install or just questions in general let me know and I will do my best to get them answered.

Thanks for your effort. I had this issue last summer. After much searching I found and followed this instruction. It is right behind the radio easily accessed. I DID IT IT WORKS !!! Only a few minors due to Apps Siri and Location were off, (Save batteryNUT!!) woudlnt let my phone connect AMAZING

Great video!!!!! I have an input if you don't mind... ( @10:15....... you should use the green wires and the purple wires instead of the white and gray speaker wires (from the aftermarket radio) .... your system would be alot louder .. more bass... ...(RADIO SIDE TO EXPENSIVE HARNESS)... *GREEN (radio side) - WHite *GREEN BLACK (radio side)-- WHITE BLACK *PURPLE (radio side) - Gray *PURPLE BLACK (radio side) - Gray Black White , white black gray ,gray black from the aftermarket radio NOT used.. GREEN , GREEN BLACK PURPLE , PURPLE BLACK on the expensive Harness NOT used

From what I could find, your GPS will work just may not be as accurate. Or it may not work all together. I didn't want to chance it so just did it. But my advice is still the same, find a unit without the need for it and save the headache even if it costs a little more! Thanks for watching!

I honestly used Crutchfield to get everything but the knockout switch. The knockout switch is just a generic Toyota knockout switch off of Amazon. That being said, I DO NOT recommend this head unit at all. I've been using it for over a year now and it is terrible. The wireless Apple CarPlay and Android auto barely work if at all. Even plugging one of them in to get it to work is finicky. Stay clear of this unit. When I get the chance I am going to swap this out with an Alpine head unit myself. Thanks for watching!

Thanks for making the video! I was thinking about doing this but after watching all you had to do I am not sure it is worth it. I just installed a Pioneer DMH-W4660NEX without connecting the VSS or parking brake wires and everything I want works fine for me. I do get a pop-up saying "Attach vehicle speed sensor wire" occasionally when I am in the Pioneer user interface but wireless Apple Carplay works just fine for me. It must be using the built in GPS or have some kind of accelerometer to tell when I am moving because I cannot access the Pioneer settings while the vehicle is moving more than 5-10 mph.

I agree. If I had to do it again, I would make sure to find a unit without the need of the vss wire. I'm glad everything worked out for you and I hope your Pioneer works a bit better than mine! Thanks for watching 👍

Sorry for the late reply. KZbins notifications are terrible. But honestly I do not recommend this head unit at all. I've been using it for well over a year now and it is finicky and subpar at its best. A couple buddies of mine have Alpine head units and have had really good luck with them. So I will probably go that route in the future. Thanks for watching!

The Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) wire let's the Vehicle and the head unit know how fast the Vehicle is moving. It helps to make the GPS more accurate and, unfortunately, is required for wireless Apple CarPlay on this head unti and others. Hope this helps and thanks for watching!

Eventually yes. I plan on installing a rear bumper with a spare tire mount so I wanted to wait for that so I can find the best location for the camera. Also want a front approach camera that I can use while crawling. Bumpers should be coming this year and I will do my best to shoot a video on it!

So is the VSS wire only required for Wireless CarPlay stereos? I just ordered a similar pioneer stereo but a bit lower tier than yours, mine doesn’t have wireless CarPlay. Just wondering if this will be an issue with mine or not.

Correct it is for WIRELESS Apple CarPlay only. You shouldn't have to worry about this. Thanks for watching though! 👍

For anyone not wanting to have to hunt the VSS wire down. I just swapped out my head unit for a wireless apple CarPlay Boss stereo and did not have to tap into the VSS, CarPlay has been working fine wired and wirelessly for a few months. 06 sport, non JBL

Yup can't recommend this enough. Even with the VSS wire being installed, Apple CarPlay and Android auto are both terrible on this head unit. Definitely go this route if you have the option. Steer away from Pioneer.
