I am not a musician of any kind, but my bro bought a Vox VT20+ and hooked it up to his Ricky 330. F***ing awesome. I just cannot believe the sound he gets for the money it cost. Besides the great tone, he has a plethora of effects to keep you busy experimenting. The build quality is absolutely rock solid, too. I may not be a musician, but I know when things are built extremely well. I also know when equipment sounds good.

I got one of these amps not to long ago and I love it, the presets are a little iffy but with some small changes in bass and treble and you can get any sound you want , I play metal and I can get some really nice deep distorted sounds out of this.

@JuanSaler the "Green" mode is focused on the raw amp models, with just a touch of reverb or delay in the presets. "Orange" mode features many effects in it's presets. "Red" is dedicated to artist patches, to copy the tones of famous songs.

Just to clear up the Tube issue; Valvetronix Amps have a 12AX7 tube, that IS in the power section. I know that we always associate the "12AX7" tube with a preamp. However, our technology in Valvetronix is called the "VALVE REACTOR". It reacts like the the original amp's power section. This power tube technology creates abundant headroom.

Modeling amps are for versatile players who a) don't mind that they're not the highest end boutique tube amps, b) do many gigs that vary in style/genre and appreciate all the features, while not THE BEST effects or maximum control over them, its enough to get through the gig and make that money.

For what it is (valve amp) this is a fairly good sounding amp. I have owned one. I traded up to a Bugera 6262 all tube and for a cheap tube amp, the Bugera was very nice. I'd say if you need al of those effects built in for home use, get the Vox. If you you minimal effects and just have a few pedals, you can't beat raw tube for tone.

I bought my Vox Valvetronix VT30 in 2008 and I think this problem has been around with it since. Some of the amp models on the amp have more hiss then some of the other amp models on the amp but I hear it when I play a string. I test how much hiss each amp model has by palm muting the lowest string and playing it. I have the noise reduction set so there is the least amount of noise or no noise at all. The amp is quieter but again I hear the hiss when I palm mute a string and play it. And I understand the more gain there is the more noise or hiss you're going to have but some of the heavier gain amp models have less hiss than others. And even some low gain and cleaner amp models have a little bit of hiss when played. I tested both my les paul and Stratocaster and the amount of hiss on each amp model is the same with both guitars. I like the heavier amp models because I'm a metal fan and I am trying to record a power metal album. So I want the amp to be as "clean" as possible while still having the heavy distortion (if that makes sense to you). If you could tell me every way you know how get rid of the hiss that would be extremely appreciated. Thanks.

@stevehogarth85 In my opinion the new VT50, is a better option, as it has more storage for programs, 8 to be exact, and more features including independent reverb and harmonizing effects. I like the overall tone and voicing of the VT50 over the XL series, even with it being one speaker compared to the two speaker configuration in the XL model.

@murfdog19 Yes, I have played one of the fenders. I personally think that the VOX is more versatile. You can get the sound the fender will give you, and more. Also, this amp is a partial tube amp, so you can get great tube-like tones from it. What styles of music do you normally play?

I just got one of these - a VT40 - and it sounds pretty good. I can get some really neat cleanish sounds by accident if I close my eyes and rotate knobs. Some hum and hiss problems. Main weirdness is when I shift the gain knob by an eighth of an inch the amp goes dead. WTF? Maybe I should read further in the manual!

@murfdog19 I would say that the Vox VT 15 watt or 30 watt would be perfect. Unless you don't put microphones on the speakers. If you don'd mike the speakers up, you might want to go with one of the more powerful versions, like the 50 or 100 watt ones.

@Classix1969 im not sure if you own one of these amps but you can get amazing tube tones from it, it's a tube amp so you only get the tube tone when you turn up your volume, you can also change the amount of watts it uses so can play turn it up on full volume at pratice volumes, but if you're talking about the video tone the metal tone is ok but vox guitars aren't very metal so it sounds alittle fuzzy

@maidenman74 yeh it take abit of getting used to, theres no fault, it sounds that way :( although you can get some awesome crunchy tones just switch to the UK modern and adjust the gain to what you want, then put you treble around 7 and you bass around 5 and mids about 4-5 too and about 3 reverb, and adjust any effects you want, you can use Us '90s model too that gives abit more crunch with those settings but not as much gain, hope it helped man

Glad to hear that, I've got the 30 watt combo version, I've heard good things about the katana however even though this amp is over twelve years old I'm not sure there is a better modelling amp out there, I can only put it down the valve reactor circuitry that gives the tube tone and feel. I've recently put a Jenson C10 speaker in it and it makes the cleaner tone's like the fender and vox models sound beautiful.
