The year is 1966, The European Space Agency has formed, their ambition? To lead Europe to space.
For all Kerbalkind is a collaborative KSP RP-1 series with TheBeardyPenguin and N9Gaming based loosely on the Apple TV show For All Mankind.
I'll be joining as the UK and their commonwealth space commission, progressing to form the European space agency at a later point in the series.

Looks like Carnasa's version of the Harrier is decidedly beefier in terms of capabilities compared to the OTL version.

So effectively, what you fired into the Australian wilderness would be: AIM-9 Sidewinders (The first gen Harriers could only carry 2) and Firestreaks, although first gen Harriers could literally only carry the 2 Sidewinders and bombs.

clearly this harrier is far beefier than it's IRL counterpart then.

considering it is the Kestral you could argue for SRAAMS since those were fitted to the prototype but no actual production model as far as I know

Hello Carnasa, I've watched the part when you struggled with the manuvering of the vertical take off and landing of your harrier jump jet, and I've noticed that your jump jet is missing reaction thrusters on the nose, wings and tail. The real jump jet has thrusters I've mentioned above that use air from the pegasus engine to control the plane in vtol mode, whereas the control surfaces are useless unless in horizontal flight.
@Carnasa
@Carnasa 3 ай бұрын
I looked this up after designing it, and yeah noticed that, I think the only thing I could use is HTP RCS thrusters on it, but I tried that and even the largest ones are simply not powerful enough in atmo to do anything :( but yeah flying in VTOL config is an absolute nightmare because of that haha

If you want/need some more inspiration for uniquely Kerbalizable (and often unbuilt) British aircraft, you might try Tony Buttler's "British Secret Projects" books, in particular "Hypersonics, Ramjets and Missiles" and "Jet Bombers Since 1949." They're on Scribd, too, last I checked. The same publisher also has a a few "French Secret Projects" books in the same series, by J. C. Carbonel, including "French and European Spaceplane Designs 1964-1994," which might have a few obscure, promising gems. If you REALLY want to lure in some viewers/patreons, though, while keeping with the Commonwealth theming? I've got four words for you: "Avro Arrow, and variants." :)

I just checked about the Olympus engines, yeah the TSR-2 used the original Olympus engine, which was developed into the Olympus 593. Edit: The engine was designed in 1966, so it is technically of the right period.

The harrier used air based RCS. Configuring air RCS for RP-1 seems not fun, so maybe just adding compressed nitrogen or another small tank of fuel would work better.

One option there would be to use HTP, as that could be justified as also powering the aircraft’s auxiliary power unit when engine power is unavailable or insufficient.

local pilot here idk if it was just it being speed up or not but turning down sensitivity on ailerons/rudder might help or even using a V tail ruddervator though all honesty any VTOL is going to be naturally unstable these are just a few ideas if you want to be really crazy there is always the Sikorsky XV-2.

The Smaller missiles you put on your Harrier are probably short range air-air missiles, probably equivilent to the AIM 9 Sidewinder which the Harrier historically used, while the larger ones could be air-ground missiles like the AGM 12 Bullpup, or they could be another, longer ranged air-air missile more equivilent in capabilities to something like an AIM 7 Sparrow. Your Harrier is also much more heavily armed than the real life one, which only had 5 total hardpoints, each only carrying one bomb or missile, plus a pair of 30mm cannons.
@onlythehutch6559
@onlythehutch6559 3 ай бұрын
the version he made was the harrier 2 (you can tell by gear placing) so GR5, 7 or 9 so it has 8 underwing pylons, 2 of which had to be used for aam due to weight as there are under wing landing gear, (us av8s lack these hardpoints) then also 3 hardpoints under fuselage (one can only have a gun pod that is half built into fuselage, 1 bombs and the other the gun pod or a targeting pod for laser guided munitions) also unrelated note for anyone else TSR 2 was meant to be a low altitude tactical strike platform for both nuclear and conventional payloads but also with the secondary ability to do recognisance after sensors fitted in the bomb bay, not dissimilar to the Canberra it was meant to replace.
