The reason Face ID works best for tracking, is that it's the only one using infrared dots lasered towards your face, an infrared light to light it up and an infrared camera to shoot that all and create a 3D map of it. Kind of over-engineered, but it's crazy how many industries are now using it for completely different uses that it was designed for. Also very Hollywood in this use case as performance capture can use either dots that are blasted with IR light or dots that emit IR light to cameras that capture the movement. The latter was used on some of the Planet of the Apes movies for outside environments, since they work in sunlight, which the first and older mocap tech doesn't work in. It's made for studios.

So, to elaborate about Kizuna AI: she was never *replaced* as such, there was a lot of misinformation surrounding that. Basically, they brought in more people who each got their own version of Kizuna AI, so there was a gamer version who specifically focused on doing let's plays fx. As far as I know, 2 of them have since gotten their own new identities and are streaming basically as indies now I think. BUT! There was at least 1 instance of a company trying to outright replace their talents: Game-bu (meaning "Game Club") which back in the day was basically competing directly with Nijisanji and Hololive, but people noticed that suddenly they sounded and acted different, and it was discovered they had fired the previous people behind the models and hired new ones, and there was a massive shitstorm and the company went bankrupt. So nobody is probably going to attempt that again lol. Oh and also, the quickly bring it back to Kizuna Ai again: there's a lot of debate about who might be the *true* first Vtuber, but Kizuna Ai was the one to coin the term, so technically she's the first, by being the first to use that term.

Interresting episode for sure! Nice to get some insight on what this new world that is rising is all about. My intuition is that most people's initial roadblock for understanding vtubing is the relationship between being face to face and being genuine. So when they see an animated avatar, it feels like the person has something to hide within that paradigm. Maybe that's true in some cases, but so far it seems to be more about being able to express ourselves more clearly when our meat suits are more of a distraction/liability.

33:43 Wow, didn't know how lucrative this Vtuber business is, especially now that it's becoming more popular in the west. Even the ownership of the character has so much red tape depending on whether it's a corporation or an agency. I can definitely see the similarities between this and the idol industry in Japan, now THAT I've heard a lot of stories both good and bad. They for sure take that industry their very seriously.

Listening to Jesse talk about youtube algorithm and numbers so much on Cox N Crendor I feel like he should take some time to look into Hololive culture. It's pretty insane with the numbers some of their members consistently pull. I think one of the most recent big CCV events was Pekora playing Kakarot. People love their DBZ and just like how Jesse loves watching people react to FF14 we love watching someone react to DBZ for the first time. I regularly even buy tickets to their concerts to watch on my computer. I invite my friend over who also likes Hololive and we make it a party. Also recommend checking out Holostars, the boys of the group under the Cover corporate umbrella. They tend to get fewer numbers but nonetheless they have pretty damn consistent CCV counts. Also just as good of singers as the Hololive girls. If Jesse ever wanted to learn more about idol culture there's probably no better place to start at least from a vtubing standpoint with the amount of concerts they regularly hold. It's also really cool to watch the growth of the talents' when it comes to their singing and dancing. It's not like all of them are amazing straight from the get go but that's why it's so charming to watch them learn more and get better at singing.

Trouble I've seen with a lot of Vtubers is, that they spend a fortune on everything without every going live and when they finally do, they're a wet blanket. I too have the same dad as Dodger and Jesse. The more something strays away from "reality" the harder a sell it is. Even historical can occasionally be a struggle if it's too unfamiliar to him. Fantasy, sci-fi, animated, etc. are real hurdles. He simply doesn't get particularly invested in fiction, and the more "unreal" it is the more acutely he is aware of that it's fiction. That he somehow got really into Game of Thrones was a miraculous anomaly, he even talked to me about theories about what might happen next episode.

Some question I always had are: How much tracking or accuracy makes for good/better vtubing? The design has to be nailed down and appealing of course, and the creators have different access to different levels of quality of tracking tools. But are there communities that want a slightly yank model? Is sometimes glitching part of the fun? Or would in the future a perfectly tracked model be successful?

I'm probably going to regret asking this but I've been actually curious for a long time: As someone who admittedly watches a lot of Vtubers... just what makes Ironmouse so popular? Nothing against her to be clear, I gave her a shot and just didn't feel like I was getting enough out of her content, but she's still often one of the first names to come up when Vtubers are brought up and I always wondered what set her apart from the rest.
@captainpandaman50977 ай бұрын
Depends on when you catch her really. She's a variety streamer that regularly streams for 10+ hours and moves through different things in those hours usually. Sometimes you catch her singing which is always nice, sometimes she's not feeling well because of her health and meds so she's just doing react content. She'll play games, or just chat with friends or just rant about a topic to chat and those range from just chill to some wild things being said which is fun. Not everyone is for everyone though of course so if its not your vibe that's cool.
@dopaminecloud7 ай бұрын
Unsure if it's related but I think depending on who you watch your expectations lie elsewhere. Some streamers are what I'd call the "high effort" variety where, though lesser in quantity, put thought into making sure it's always content rich, usually helped by planning. And then the, probably more popular format due to parasocial and/or celebrity culture type stuff, where it's a lot more whatever whenever but people just wanna watch the person waffle about aimlessly for hours at a time. I've seen it called "second monitor content" too lol. What I'm more curious personally is why people differentiate between regular streamers and vtubers like theres anything different going on with the latter.

Mouse is one of the first western vtubers and therefore had a lot of time to build a fanbase. She started streaming in 2017, well before vtubers were a thing in the west, so when they became a thing she was already there and somewhat established. She's one of the bigger names in western vtubing, because she's been there from the beginning and did quite a lot to help establish it as a form of media. Apart from that though, people watch her for the same reason they watch any streamer, I'd wager - they vibe with her personality and find her entertaining. That's why I personally watch her, at least. Plus she's a great singer.
