DRYCHA LORE TIME: So back in the day the Dwarfs and High Elves had a big war orchestrated by Malekith, Witch King of the Dark Elves. Malekith used the opportunity to attack Ulthuan, home of the High Elves and the High Elves had to pull back from the continent to defend their home. But some Elves were sick of fighting so they stayed and found refuge in Athel Loren. Most of the Ancients (as the super old Treeman spirits are referred to) were not thrilled at having non-forest beings in Athel Loren, but Durthu convinced them that they could be useful for defending the borders. So the Elves were allowed to stay and in exchange, the forest got their souls when they die (which is actually a win-win for the Elves since there's a good chance an Elf's soul gets gobbled up by Slaanesh when they die so becoming a tree spirit is definitely preferable). Coeddil and his assistant, Drycha, were not happy with this decision. Then Morghur the Shadowgave (one of the Beastmen lords who basically gets infinite respawns in lore) made his way into Athel Loren. Ariel, queen of the Wood Elves, sought to try to contain his essence to prevent him from respawning since each time he died, his tainted blood corrupted more of the forest. But the ritual went awry and Morghur was killed and corrupted a sacred tree now known as the Tree of Woe. This was the last straw for Coeddil and Drycha as they blamed the tree's corruption on the Elves and their failed plan. Coeddil was stopped and locked deep in the woods behind a magical barrier to prevent him from going on a murderous rampage to purge the Elves. Drycha is still at large and seeks to free Coeddil and rid the forest of the Elves who have brought nothing but trouble to their home. So in game, all of Drycha's tree units are purple and have the Frenzy trait which gives bonus damage, melee attack, and Immune to Psychology so long as leadership is above 50%. If you like playing with trees and don't like Elves (like me), Drycha's campaign is right for you

I'll add to this: Even Durthu, the one initially took in the elves, have grown sick of them. He held them responsible for all the conflict and destruction that came with their baggage. Thus he no longer consider the Wood Elves as friend, but he is willing to use them as convenient allies. So yeah, the nature units are more or less tolerating the elves. And that's only the less pissed off tree spirits.

Final note is that Ariel was corrupted by morghur's blood and to cleanse her one of the three oldest ancient tree men sacrificed his life to save her so durthu and coeddil lost their brother to them

the slaanesh part is only the case in 40k in fantasy there gods are alive well and they only go to slaanesh if there stupid enough to give it

@marley7868 The Slaanesh bit is present in Warhammer Fantasy as well, I didn't say anything incorrect. In 40K it's almost a given that when an Eldar (or whatever the new spelling is) dies, its soul is taken by Slaanesh because they were the ones who created Slaanesh. In Fantasy, Elf souls are still hungered after by Slaanesh but the Elven gods try to avoid letting it happen. It's mostly Ereth Khial, the Pale Queen, as the Elven afterlife is her domain and she's constantly trying to get Elf souls back from Slaanesh

23:25: the funny thing is that there is a skaven that could be considered somewhat trustworthy, queek head taker is know to be considerate to his soldiers and treats them more than just expendable slave, this in turn has his force be actually loyal to him and once even to a lethal hit for him, and since skaven are usually known for stabbing each other in the back the other skaven clans thing queeks clan has their rat in some kind of spell, not even comprehending that loyalty is a thing

Prior to Twisted and Twilight's release, the Wood Elves would start in their forest Athel Loren and need to expand out to collect Amber. There were no other racial mechanics other than the hunt for Amber. For factions, you had a basic office system similar to how the Empire used to work except for Orion you could only appoint Elves while Durthu could only appoint Treemen. And the reason you needed to conquer so much territory was because each settlement gave you 1 Amber which you would then use to get powerful techs, or spend 1 Amber per late game unit like Waywatchers. But the ultimate goal was to restore the Oak of Ages by dumping tons of Amber on it. AI Durthu was particularly aggressive in his quest for Amber and the community lovingly nicknamed him Tree Hitler. The reworked Wood Elf forest/Amber system is infinitely better than how it used to be

To expand a little more on what somebody else said, Drycha might be fine with the Wood Elves if Morghur did not exist. Morghur is a Beastman who is effectively a living deity. He is immortal, being Chaos made manifest, and his soul is too great for his body, which causes his power to constantly leak out of him and twist the environment. He makes trees come alive to grasp, claw and scream at people around them, he'll cause people to merge into horrific nightmarish things under his control just by standing too close to him, and it's hard to kill him since even a canonball will turn to smoke if fired at him from too far away. Now with that in mind, Morghur wants to murder Ariel, the Wood Elf Queen, and the problem is that she's in Athel Loren. This means that every time he invades, a portion of the forest is forever corrupted, and even if you kill him, his death still poisons a part of the forest forever, and he respawns elsewhere since there's nothing that can counter his immortality (every attempt the Wood Elves made to do so ended in disaster). It was one of Morghur's invasions that made Drycha so upset, since she believed that the Wood Elves utterly failed to defend the forest, and Morghur is also responsible for corrupting Coeddil, causing him to be banished to the shadow woods, the part of Athel Loren nobody ventures because there are "things" that live there which nobody wants to wake up except for Drycha. That being said, Drycha has allied with the Wood Elves in the past. When Heinrich Kemmler, the Lichemaster invaded, she attempted to stop him on her own, got completely wrecked, and then reluctantly turned to ask the Wood Elves for help because without them, he would've killed/consumed the Oak of Ages and destroyed Athel Loren. They eventually made Kemmler flee at great personal loss to themselves (before the End Times, Kemmler came the closest to destroying Athel Loren), but he still pops in the forest every now and again because they (both Drycha and the Wood Elves) don't have any way to stop him from doing so (he can turn into mist if there's too many Wood Elves, or he'll literally eye-beam a small squad if there's not enough), and Kemmler is the only outsider who's learned the bizarre and time-twisting passages of the forest like they have.

If you want to see the Skaven Mutagen mechanic in action, I recommend a video by Reggie. You reacted to one of his video where he played a Warhammer 3 mod involving a squid god. He has a Clan Molder video called "I Used Chromosome to Become God in Total Warhammer 3" where he spends much of it trying to create the ultimate lifeform named Joey.

My favourite faction. Wood elves, the every twitchy murder tree hippies. Hit like a truck, but can't for the life of them take a punch.

I hate fighting them, whenever I can get away with it, I'll autoresolve their battles, even if I lose a few units. Because screw chasing their archers around.

for some factions that revolve around a single settlement or no settlements for less management id recommend trying out Nakai, as he leaves all the settlement management to his vassal he is free to go anywhere and fight anyone, ofcourse its a good idea to play a more normal campaign first but later on definitely try him out, or you can play 1 city skaven and just spread your influence using the undercities, maybe taking a few capitals for special buildings in them, there is a lot of different things to try out as personal challenges so i do hope you enjoy exploring wh3 Also yes clan moulder is a real blast (figuratively and literally) to play, had one campaign where i tried over and over to create the ultimate warrior, Francis the Mutant rat ogre, went all the way to Francis XXVI before he was perfect, and boy was he a powerhouse sidenote: naming your units makes you oddly attached to them and their progress oh and yes the unit cards are mostly fixed in wh3 and the forge of daith is a looooot better

As an XCOM player, I feel the pain way more when one the units I named dies, so I feel the same.

I keep forgetting to name my units. The fact that I play undead also doesn't incentivize it either. I might make a habbit of only doing it to those that reach a certain level of veteran cycling? Units that last long enough get rep and nicknames like that.

4:00 Unfortunately weather effects have not been brought back for TWW3, which is a shame. In older titles like Medieval 2, darkness and fog would penalise accuracy and how well units could keep track of each other, rain would make ranged attacks less powerful, etc. At least, I think so, getting precise (or even rough) figures is much harder for the older titles without digging through the files. What definitely had an effect was terrain type. Various units would get buffs when fighting in a specific environment (i.e. snow, mountains), and would get nerfs for fighting in other environments (i.e. desert, swamp).

@@johnj.spurgin7037 I suspect such mods exist to an extent, but I haven't found any, and if they do it is likely in a very limited capacity. For all the many, many quality of life improvements the new Total War engine has, there is stuff from the Medieval 2 version which it just can't do, or at least not properly, and I believe that one such factor is conditional battlefield modifiers.

@The_Industry and yet... we HAVE evidence of such. There are areas of a map that are treated as swampy and apply penalties to units without the aquatic modifier. Perhaps the solution is to clone maps and have the regional/provincial weather procc using a different set of maps, such as a "flooded" variant that slaps the water on everything and makes any area that had water originally impassable, or a river crossing map that's flooded doing attrition to units in the area the river previously covered. If you're just cloning maps and slapping some modifiers and visible weather overlay effects, it might be doable? Cloning the oceanic "storm" event toggle to apply to land provinces and then applying variants (the kislev snowstorm cosmetic that you can activate using one of their god options for instance) and probability depending on the province. Snowstorms become MASSIVELY more probable in arctic regions for instance, while badlands and deserts can randomly proc sandstorms. Further modify the probability by if a given weather occurs in an adjacent province, with decreasing percentage the longer a given weather system goes on, and you can... PROBABLY make it work just fine. Cloning the maps might be data intensive though? IDK the data ratio of maps to things like units with all their stats and animations.

Weather effects didn't make it to Warhammer 3. Pharaoh on the other hand has them and vastly improved terrain modifiers.

Yeah, Mandaloregaming generally hates elves, especially the woodkind. It’s probably due to Elder Scroll’s elves, but I’m not sure.

I think it's important to note that a lot of stuff in these reviews are very outdated, that includes his warhammer 3 review. But the forge got a pretty big rework after the dlc came out and it's very good now.

Funny you mention this. I literally just finished streaming my first time playing Warhammer 3 xD. I stream here on the YT channel almost everyday with Warhammer on Thursdays.

Oreon is probably the most busted campaign in the game if you actually abuse the upkeep reduction mechanic. You can easily field 10+ full stack armies with little to no upkeep by turn 15 (when all the other Factions have like 2 or 3) Yes other factions like the Tomb Kings and Beastmen also dont have to pay upkeep, but they have mechanics that restrict that advantage. In the case of the Wood Elfs, their roster and faction are balanced to have upkeep in mind. So them suddenly having 0 costs for your entire military is just insane. Oreon is also the easiest campaign to do the "Total War" Challenge, where you go to war with everyone you meet, and not have any peace treaties.
