Please don't take all of these comments as a negative. Most people here seem to love the content and are offering constructive advice. Learn from the mistakes of others while still making this vehicle YOUR vehicle. Most of us commend you for the work that you are doing and watched (sometimes painfully) as you built and rebuilt the frame and made it what it is today. You are doing a good job. Keep up the good work. As a long time instructor of tradespeople in a college setting, please wear safety gear. Safety glasses (at all times, not just when YOU are grinding) and gloves. I have seen too many people injured by flying debris, which weren't always from what they were working on and workers with scared hands or missing fingers from not wearing gloves. Also, please consider putting a lip on the floor pans, bending in a drop to the lower level, and hanging them from the frame rails. They would be much stronger and hold the weight of the driver and passengers a whole lot better over bumps than any manner of securing of dissimilar metals from the bottom.

Add some commentary, you experts, regarding the consequences of the quality of the welds. They may not be perfect, but are fit for the use intended, or is the car going to break apart? IMHO, boxing is typically stronger than a single gusset, but welding all around, if possible is probably the right call.

@@joaquinrius4354 he reads and does follow proper advice such as when he had tried to graft the original strut towers into this frame, or in the Samcracc's Lamborghini frame repair video, where he took it all apart just to perfect some issues. Sure, he had an original design for the frame which he then changed multiple times, thus making it look a bit patched up in construction. Perhaps it would be a more solid and reliable approach to take this last design and build from scratch a final version? Maybe so, but that frame isn't just a couple bucks worth of metal, not to speak the multiple days of labour involved. I know nothing about welding, but I do have some ideas about project managing and know stuff like this involve keeping things under budget and so cutting expenses where these aren't justifiable. The frame, though not as clean-looking, will certainly do the job as good as a whole new one, so that's an unnecessary expense.

What you're doing at the 3:10 ish mark is called gusseting - this is where either a single sheet of metal (or more to make a "box") to strengthen at corners, etc. Boxing on a chassis is usually where hollow chassis sections or open ends of tubes are closed off. A lot of pre-built chassis are bent to shape, rather than cut and welded, and for that reason will be stronger - this may be OK, but personally, I would add some strengthening plates on the sides of some of those welded joins.
@adampatterson96504 жыл бұрын
Lol I love reading the comments section. You can be an engineer a welder or a fabricator. But stepping back from picking out the small issues that a structural welder would pick out etc you have to remember what he is building. It's a car, cars are not that strong, they are manufactured from 1mm steel that's spot welder together every 25-50mm or in new cars glued. They are not holding weight ie a crane, they are not subject to harmonics like aircraft or rockets. The only stress put on the frame will be from flex a roll cage will totally Cure that not to mention the steel body that make up most of an actual factory car will also be welded to the frame. Ben the car your making is totally adequate for purpose, I have 20 years in building classics cars, motorcycles and structural welding and fabrication of steel framed buildings believe me when I tell you the job your doing is fine and you may want to change things up but listen to your gut and continue to work your way. Keep up the great work.
@muskokamike1274 жыл бұрын
wow so much wrong in one post! 1) cars are not that strong. Umm yes they actually are, otherwise, they'd fall apart after the first 10,000 miles. 2) They aren't subject to the harmonics of aircraft or rockets, but they are subject to incredible cornering forces, as well as constant vibration from rolling over uneven/rough asphalt roads. As for harmonics, I suggest you look up "death wobble" in pickups. That is 100% harmonics. (btw, I guess you've never driven over washboard roads). 3) You can hit a brick wall at 5 mph with even the cheapest subcompact car and back up and drive it home. Do that with an aircraft and it would fold up like an old beer can. 4) They use panel bond in vehicles at points where a weld would fail or break due to the constant flexing. YOu see, cars are designed to have SOME flex for this very reason. 5) Been building classic cars for 20 years and I bet you've NEVER seen a frame built like that. 6) Did you know that even a thin piece of steel becomes extremely rigid when you put a crease in the middle?
@adampatterson96504 жыл бұрын
Lol, good reply I love the criticism, each to there own buddy. I can tell you this tho here in Northern Ireland all our roads are washboard roads lol Single lane with grass up the middle between the wheels. I've seen many frames built or repaired in a similar fashion, big on old Land rovers here, as long as a frame is reinforced with fish plates over the joints they are stonger than original but reduce the flex which can induce a rollover in lifted vehicles, what I'm saying is Ben is making a vehicle fit for purpose, low, strong and as safe as he can make it. In my country in order for it to be allowed on the road it would need to go through a single vehicle approval test and then be subject to an annual MOT test where even the emissions would be checked. I have seen some wrecks go through an mot and pass in my time I have pulled repairs from the 80's out of cars that consisted of rolled up newspaper covered in fibreglass repair filler in structural areas and the car has done well over 50,000 miles with it on our washboard roads safe hell no, would I ever let something leave my garage like that, not on your nelly, but it shows that something doesn't need to be absolutely perfect to work, Car handled like a bag of diarrhoea tho lol.
@muskokamike1274 жыл бұрын
@@adampatterson9650 I hear you on certification, it all depends on where you are. In Florida, vehicles have passed safety without working headlights, hell, with NO headlights yet where I live, my Pickup wouldn't pass because the 4 wd wouldn't engage. I'm really curious as to how he's going to title this. He can't just pull the VIN tags off the old mustang, there is nothing of that vehicle in this one. Where I live it would have to pass as a "new build" and in that case, he'd need paperwork on the structural integrity testing on the frame. Same pickup I mentioned, it had a hole in the frame and I was informed it had to be repaired by a certified structural welder, NOT someone who knows how to weld. Even if the weld is done properly, they wouldn't pass it.
@adampatterson96504 жыл бұрын
@@muskokamike127 yes not sure about title myself if I recall I think the mustang was supposed to be something for track days, but here we have to get all frame modification inspected and passed before letting you drive it on the road, not sure how it works in the U.S. With inspections would he have to register it as a kit car cos its no longer a notch back mustang or the modern donar. I just am intrigued on his take on how all the components will come together how it will look, I am totally reserving judgement on framework until the whole work is completed ie rollcage, gussets to body etc I here you on the flex issue and if the subframes become solid mounted at any stage I would then worry about weld integrity as the rubber in the subframes mounts and suspension bushes should absorb most of the logitudinal forces of cornering etc. I have built a couple of rally cars with the owner asking me to seam weld the body shell for stiffness and I have had to re do it as a maintainance issue after a couple of rally's due to solid suspension mounts having no give and weakening the hard brittle mig welds, I now oxy acetylene weld the seams as the weld is less brittle and I find a little more able to absorb jump impacts. Nice chatting to you buddy I rarely comment on videos cos I rarely watch KZbin but covid means we are still on lockdown here hope you are keeping safe over there.
@muskokamike1274 жыл бұрын
@@adampatterson9650 Good point on the kit cars but even then, they have been DOT approved during the development stage. I know Factory Five Racing crash tests all their kits, same as Superformance, so they meet or exceed DOT standards. I agree 100% on the stiffness of mig joints. I forget the name of it but I dealt with a company whose double sided tapes were used to hold truck frames together because welds were too stiff and cracked. The tape held the frame securely yet allowed it to flex under load. (if you've ever seen a tractor pulling a heavy 53' long load you can see them twist). I don't know how much it weighs now, but 100% it's going to weigh a lot more than a stock 2015. The floor pan on the 2015 isn't anywhere near as heavy as all that tubular steel. If you want another take on this type of build, go over to B is for Build and look what they did when they welded a '66 body onto the pan of a 2015. Vehcor is doing one too. He'd dropping a '65 convertible body onto a 2015 pan.

Love the channel, it is a great build. I recommend you fish plate those sections of frame you butted together. Will make it stronger. Also think about this, if you drag race that cat and launch it with slicks it is going to twist the frame. You might want to add some reinforcement so it does not twist. I know you want to do it your way, but take advice and make it your own

Don't get me wrong, I love the guy and respect his determination. He is talented, but face it, planning is not his strong point. This suddenly became a pieced together hack job. Too bad, a little research and planning would have saved face.

Ben, a suggestion for the make up at 6:25- drill some 1/8" inch holes in the over plate where it crosses the inside of the square tube and plug weld it to the inside of the tube as well as seam weld it outside. This is among the most highly stressed areas in any car frame. Another suggestion about the roll cage tube thickness; if you think you might want to compete on a sanctioned track, make sure the cage is up to what ever rules the sanctioning body has. FWIW, as a bonafide You Tube Expert, with thousands of hours of viewing, and highly qualified to give free advice, I am telling you; build it how you want it, how it will make you happy; the rest of us "experts" are just along for the ride!

I think a lot of people are worried that the welds themselves aren’t strong enough by themselves. Usually in a racing application we would take a smaller pipe that would fit on the inside. Take and drill a few holes while the smaller inserts aren’t in. Place them back inside and weld it up where you drilled the holes. That makes it act more like solid piece of metal then!
