Vulcans are a lovely people. I never hear anyone mention this, but Vulcans and Romulans are a very close parallel with the Light Elves and Dark Elves of Norse mythology. Much as the Calaquendi and Moriquendi of Tolkien are; and those of the Thor franchise. This idea that humankind's closest neighbors, in the "astral plane" or the "otherworlds" (which meant something more like a parallel universe originally, not a physical planet) are these two races of pointed-eared smart people, one friend and one foe, is so widespread, that I'm confident that whenever we finally meet aliens of some type, they'll be straight up elves.

klinton kavanagh. Do you even know how anything works, everything natural is logical and reasonable. Natural selection, gravity, atoms, evolution, etc. they're all reasonable.
@jamesr65657 жыл бұрын
The universe is logical in the sense that laws of physics exist, which can be deduced through reason and expressed mathematically or linguistically. But the universe is far more complex than deductive logic and the simpler forms of mathematics that most who regard themselves as "scientifically literate", yet in fact aren't, can make sense of in entirety. Remember also that all systems of logic, like mathematics, rest at their core on a set of fundamental assumptions, called "axioms", which are taken as self-evidently true. With different fundamental assumptions, one's chain of reasoning, however valid, will yield different results..non-Euclidian geometries are one such example. Logic alone cannot establish truth...it can only derive new conclusions from what is already assumed to be true. Which is why so much of science is built around experimental support rather than pure logic. In the popular lexicon, "logical" is often interpreted to mean "provable by experimental evidence ", when experimental proof is actually not logic, in the sense that actual mathematicians and scientists use the term logic. It may be that the logic the Vulcans employ derives its conclusions from the fundamental "axioms" of their worldview...their spiritual beliefs. Perhaps the "evidence" for these axioms lies in the meditative exercises and psychic expeiences common to all Vulcans, rather than through our form of scientific experimentation. There are human philosophers, like the theologians of old like Thomas Aquinas, who were adept logicians, but working within a worldview that is different from that of modern science. Their logic was just as valid as that of the modern logicians...they simply started from different axiomatic assumptions. Modern science is far from the only "logical" worldview, as real students of logic, philosophy and the history of science know.

@davidkelly42107 жыл бұрын
The Romulans aren't exactly a live and let live race. Nor do they flourish off Romulus, relying on (brutally oppressed) slave races to maintain their Empire. That they have managed to not kill themselves doesn't really mean anything, mere existence doesn't preclude a self-destructive culture.
@jossgoyanko70067 жыл бұрын
Well, much like the Klingons, that deeply combative stance forces them to maintain a stance of constant expansionism. While they are self-destructive, it doesn't really matter to them so long as they can grow faster than their species can decay. They need to have someone to fight, slaves to oppress, worlds to conquer, some threat that they can use to band together, otherwise they'd probably just consume themselves. Like so many other militarists, they need war to survive.
@NotSure1097 жыл бұрын

@szlingozec83957 жыл бұрын
+ Phil Adams The Romulans and Vulcans are not actually the same race, by living on a significantly different planet for a great many generations the Romulans have actually evolved (in the sense that they have changed biologically as a species, which is not to say that it is necessarily an improvement) . Their emotions are actually far less potent than that of Vulcans by the time the TOS or even Enterprise takes place.I think that the Romulans are far more similar to humans than to Vulcans as far as mind and emotion go (although I may be mistaken here). They are however still very similar to Vulcans physically.

Favorite character in all of the Star Trek universe is Spock, followed by Quark but I digress. In Spock and the Vulcans I see hope for humanity, we should not nor should we ever suppress our emotions what we should do is learn to govern them responsibly with temperance and humility. Our emotions are both our greatest strength and weakness and from there all the worlds trouble and solutions are available to us. Without temperance and humility the worst of our emotions hate, lust, anger, vengeance, spitefulness, ignorance, etc have turned this world into the very hell we fear. With temperance and humility those same emotions can be channeled to fight those things that we know are wrong and that are holding us back from reaching our full potential. Bigotry, greed, ego, hate, ignorance, etc WILL NOT BE ELIMINATED but we will be educated as to their effects on us and what we can do, to not allow those negative influencers to effect us in the worst possible way. This will take a paradigm shift in our society but with perseverance, courage and grit we can get there or at least for the FIRST TIME, leave this world a better place than we got it.

The reason why vulcans suppress their emotions is because they can be overwhelmed by them because by nature they are highly emotional and almost savage like people more than Klingons believe it or not. Humans on the other hand do not have this so we can have emotions without reverting into an animal. An alternative theory to Vulcan's harsh environment shaping the peoples' emotional instability might be that the Vulcan peoples' emotional instability caused the planet's harsh environment. It's not too much of a stretch to suppose that a race inclined to short-term emotional gratification might cause some kind of ecological disaster that resulted in the planet's desertification. The manner of Suraks' death indicates that the Vulcans' warlike ways had at least some consequences for the planet. Such devastation could well be a primary reason the Vulcans were prepared to accept the teaching of so extreme a philosopher as Surak. "Lots of people are dying." is generally not something that tends to dissuade overly-emotional, violent people from being overly-emotional and violent. Their likely response would be, "Of course lots of people are dying: *I'm killing them, you moron!* The plan is working!" To put it another way, it's easier to accept the fact that many are losing when there remains the real possibility that you could still win. The spectacle of the planet *itself* dying, however, might just possibly provide enough motivation for a race to be ready to accept a radical solution.
@jannegrey7 жыл бұрын
+Nick Williams I believe that was even said in Enterprise, that the current state of the planet was a result of years of war using nukes. I think they dance, since Spock says Vulcan children learn dances in nursery school (Whom God's Destroy), but as adults I sort of imagine them developing dances with complex steps and patterns that must be done, almost like a mathematical equation to be worked on. You know, I have always wondered why the Romulans and the Vulcans are practically different species. No concept of evolutionary theory allows for such rapid mutation or change so quickly without a significant disease or artificial tinkering. In many ways the Vulcans remind me of Human Augments like Khan beings of extraordinary powers and abilities both telepathic (which the Romulans do not seem to be) and strength (even more so than Romulans I assume albiet without any real evidence). In fact, every augment we see in Star Trek with the exception of Bashir, whose own abilities were somewhat limited compared to Khan or the Enterprise Soong children, have extreme emotional problems and violent tendencies. Could the Romulans be the original inhabitants of Vulcan and the Vulcans augments who accepted Surak's teachings? Just a wild theory and I'm sure there are plenty of novels and comics that disagree but it does seem to be possible with established film and tv.

well non canon trek lore extensively discusses how the orion race who were technologically more advanced marked them for enslavement .. This was at a time when surak was gaining traction but when many of the leadership (who were beginning to folow his ideas) were imprisoned, including S'task one of his key disciples, all hope seemed lost but the orions had not accounted for Vulcan psionic abilities which they used very effectively and ultimately defeated the orions. S'task himself escaped his captors and was rescued but he rejected surak completely though he also accepted the more strife and wars would be futile and he headed a movement that would leave Vulcan to create another vulcan as it was meant to be , strong but not completely devoid of logic. and so millions left to settle romulus and other systems.

The state of Vulcan seems more likely a consequence of their violent past. I am thinking multiple overlapping world wars for thousands of years. Clearly, their now baren rock couldn't have evolved complex humanoid life or kept it nourish. Perhaps the late environmental devastation brought on by technological weapon innovations also helped convince the Romulans to leave. It would be ironic that perhaps the Romulans were relatively the Vulcan version of the peaceniks. :)

Not nearly as informative as expected! Prior to Vulcan cultural expansion in canon thru the movies & series set in the 24th century, fan speculation was limited to what was revealed in TOS. The idea that a single, pacifist culture based solely on logic & a suppressed sex drive predominated fan fiction. A lot of this was overturned by the depictions of Spock, Sarek & Vulcan in the movies, which introduced elements of tradition & mysticism to the mix. Authorized novels carried on the theme that Vulcans were much more emotional & culturally diverse than previously thought, even strongly suggesting that the rites of Kolinahr (seen in ST:TMP) & the ritual used to restore Spock's mind to his restored body (in STIII:The Search For Spock) belong to 2 entirely different philosophies/subcultures in Vulcan society. Another point that the video didn't address is that we clearly saw when Vulcan society changed. A criticism of Star Trek: Enterprise was that the Vulcans were unlike the tolerant, helpful Vulcans established in the earlier series. All fan notions that the Vulcans had been benevolent & helpful partners of post-war humanity following First Contact were dashed by Enterprise's portrayal of Vulcans as wary, distrustful, & manipulative. The show made a good case for the Vulcan point-of-view, which makes sense in an overall arc of social evolution. Human culture has changed over time; it really was illogical to assume that Vulcan society hadn't! Vulcans, as portrayed in Enterprise, favored a slow & methodical approach. They weren't given to the sorts of spontaneous inspiration so common in imaginative human beings. They also, remember, live around 200+ years, so fewer generations had passed for the Vulcan diplomats than the humans since Cochrane's flight. They knew very well how recently human beings had still been a violent & unpredictable race; & their cultural mindset crippled the more senior members of the diplomatic delegation in seeing humanity's potential. I tend to think of T'Pol as a trailblazer. Because she was younger & was marginally more flexible; besides having other incentives, as we learned thru the show. She was the first to demonstrate that it was POSSIBLE for a suitably open-minded Vulcan to function in a mostly human crew. I don't remember the episode, but it was on Enterprise that we first saw Vulcans embrace the premise of IDIC & the value of a more moderate approach to emotional control. Certainly, later Vulcans such as Sarek-- who had lived his entire life in the Federation with humans as allies-- was far more emotional than practitioners of Kolinahr. He even married a human woman, & consented to have a hybrid child: personal choices which would've been incomprehensible to his grandparents' generation, exemplified in Enterprise's Vulcan diplomatic mission.

My problem with "Vulcan Logic" is that it is not actually logic in the mathematical sense. Vulcan Logic is closer to the Neo-Confucian concept of Li 理, which roughly translates to Principle (with a capital P). Li is the expression of Dao 道 and is a pure, perfect, and true principle that can be understood by the Mind 心. Like Vulcans, Neo-Confucian philsophers in China believed emotions confuse our understanding of Li. To improve one's perception and understanding of Li, one needs to meditate 靜坐 and investigate things 格物 to uncover Li.

So Surak is basically Karl Marx, logic is philosophical materialism, Kolonar is class conciousness, V'tosh Ka'tur is post-modernism, Syrranites are Leninists, and ''Live long and prosper'' is ''Workers of the world unite.''

Most violent? I think you're mistaking Vulcans for Klingons. 3:47 Where did you get this from? (video) 5:25 I read that the circle and the triangle represent the infinite and the finite. 6:40 I expected you to use an image of Tuvok choking Nelix, which is what happened in the episode the previous image is from.

How does greed benefit any race or nation, especially when it comes to "leaders"? -The heart is the center of a human being and when that is tainted, shits happen and innocent civilians suffer. Is that logic?

How about how the Romulans got their ridge on their forehead? Did they at one time mate (or do genetic experiments) with the Klingons because I read a book that said that Romulans internal organs were slightly different than Vulcans. Also, are the Remans an ancient offshoot of Vulcans that left well before the Romulans. Could the Remans be the equivalent of Human Neanderthal that did not go extinct and were separated by the Seeders or Preservers to see how the Remans and Vulcans evolve independently of each other?

One has to wonder how much of Vulcan is rubble from destroyed cities. They were on the edge of destruction (not only destroying cities and environment), who knows how far they went?

how about doing a video about classic Cylons from Battlestar Galactic 1978 please!!!
How long do they live? Mating practices? Their laws? How do they raise their children? How are the Romulans related to Vulcans & when & why did they separate?
@mariajohnson-tanner2720 Жыл бұрын
The lifespan of a Vulcan on average is around 250 years and the Vulcans who rejected logic were exiled they then evolved over centuries into the Romulans we see now.

Why did you deliberately ignore the fact that it was the finding of the Kir'shara, Surak's original teachings, was what led to the reformation of the Vulcan people? You implied that Surak's original were forever lost.
