I don't know whats up but I'm attempting what you did at 16:34 and the damn thing won't budge. Is there something else holding it in there apart from the two bolts at the top?

Strap rope around it to the back of the car and go around the block couple of times it should split open , it worked for me with heads.

About to do the same thing ... I really need luck Since there are barely any vRS left .. longest ratio of all 02J's . And never did this before nor any one want to touch & rebuild it.

West coast there's literal tons of VR transmissions floating around. Between me and my friends we probably have 10 not in cars. Dig around, they're out there! Watch all 3 videos here to get a good feel for what's involved, buy a Bentley manual, and go for it!

I have 2 other project cars 1 Just was a Dif upgrade .. and one was custom Built in UK, This time I got a Trans for less than 200$ from a good friend , I can do everything by hand and always did ( but Trans was always scary ) I think the time is now since I won't get any younger & Nothing will beat the : I did it.

I can’t seem to get the 5th gear off the splines. I heated it for several minutes with a torch and applied hundreds of pounds of pressure but it won’t budge.

thats because you need an actual gear puller... $40 to rent or buy them at hte parts stores ..

By chance do you know if the seal attached to the cover seen at 2:36 requires any type of gasket maker when reinstalling? My 02J is leaking from there and I just ordered the oem gasket to replace it.

Rubber gaskets should never be sealed with RTV material. They leak because over time the rubber (nitrile or otherwise) breaks down and allows the gasket to compress. VW used rubber gaskets on valve covers, gearboxes, oil pans, etc because those items are normally removed at intervals for maintenance. Well, not so much engine oil pans but at least they made them accessible from under the car without removing too much other stuff. I do however recommend smearing Silglyde all over the gasket. You can find it at Napa.

@@repairvehicle Trans has been in the car probably 120k miles. Still like new. Abuse is all it knows. Its AWD and gets pounded. Already due for a new clutch

My input shaft bearing is ready to fall out bought a new one over a year ago and never had the ambition to change yet. Anyone know how hurtin of a job it is because I’m getting to the point I gotta do it or get a 6 speed

Full rebuild to get to that bearing. Basically the entire series of these videos. Good opportunity to install an LSD and inspect/replace worn synchro rings.

Well this was done over 5 years ago so I vaguely remember it may have been a GF5. I use a GH5 these days.

that bolt in the fifth gear end is actually xzn14 not torx 60 if you want use correct tool.

Depends on year. Most years were t60

Its not the safest thing to do but if youre ever stuck without mechanics hand cleaner use gas it works like a charm
