This is great. I doubt if the negative speakers could ever come close to replicating this series of videos no matter how hard they tried. People who lack talent sometimes need to knock others to make themselves feel more important either that or your teaching is making them afraid that they'll lose business. Either way they are wrong. I would love to visit Nelson again. Pat on the back mate. The music was fun too.

Nicely done, quick and to the point on the overall assembly.

Dual relief has two oil pressure reliefe valves instead of the one in earlier blocks. These blocks were used in the later motors in the 1302 and onwards. I have tried a few oils including some expensive ones but now use a semi synthetic cheaper oil like Castrol GTX - it works very well.

You're right I didn't put any. There is a paper gasket which I sometimes use a small amount of sealant on to hold it to the underside of the barrel/jug but there is no need for a gasket as it is fairly low pressure at the bottom end. I believe some people put them in without even the paper gasket and never have a leak.

The earlier motors had the oil cooler inside the fan houseing but this lead to overheating on the number three cylinder due to restricted air flow so in the later motors 1970ish onwards they moved the oil cooler out the back of the housing in an add on called a dog house. There are basically three ages of motors and the barrels and head don't interchange but you might have had 1500 barrels and heads on a 1300 block as they are the same era. Great motors, 60 yr old design and still hauls.

I find this way works best for me but there are other equally good ways to do it. The block end of the piston is low pressure and only needs a paper gasket, that's all the factory ever used. Some people put them in without even that without a problem. I use a little bit of liquid gasket on one face to hold the paper gasket in place which probably didn't make the video, and they haven't leaked yet :)

It should be a snug fit and will need a smack with a hammer but they generally go on without too much force. Try cleaning the crank shaft or sanding the lip with some fine sand paper like 400 grit - it might have a lip. If the pulley is used try cleaning that too. I often have difficulty getting them off but putting them back on should be easier.

These motors require more regular checks than late model motors but they are very reliable if you keep them full of oil and change it every now and then. Lots easier to replace barrels and pistons than reboring - cheaper and more accurate.

The oil pump is a tight fit so you can only get it in when the case bolts are loose. The cover presses the oil pump home so I tighten that up first to force the oil pump back the tighten the case bolts to hold it in place. Probably doesn't make much difference either way but it seems to make more sense to me this way around.

Just here - I made it with a text to speech synthesiser and Music Maker. I used to use rights-free music but I kept having problems with copyright so now I make all my own music.

yes, i read years ago about the #3 cylinder and a book suggested running the intake valve a little looser, do you do that and does it work? From what i have seem the main problem with the VW engine is valve jobs due to heat and probably also that most people don't follow intervals, i had a 69 with 90,000 never touched, the original owner was very funny with maintenance I guess it's easier to replace barrels, pistons that just hone and replace rings like a regular block.

Thanks, Don't the early 70's and later have an oil cooler near the fan? I had a 61 which was my 1st car and had that apart,, heads and pistons, never split the block, someone who had it before me has 2 different heads on it, don;t the earlier ones like the 40 hp have 2 different size manifold od where it mates to the head?

You seemed to put your crank shaft pulley on pretty easily. We're having trouble getting it on, it's such a tight fit! Do you have any suggestions?

When breaking in new main bearings ,What are your first and final torque specks on the 6 engine case bolts? Thanx would be awesome if you could help me out with that.

I work on primarily Vanagons. I was wondering if there was a reason why you torqued the case around the oil pump after you torqued down the oil pump cover. I haven't worked on a 1600 yet.

Questions. What sealant/gasket do you put between the jug and the block, i didnt see you use anything.

What does dual relief mean? I know dual port-- just wondering, amazing how basic those engines are, fairly durable too providing you change the oil frequently-- do you use straight weight as they suggested MANY years ago?

Hi, just wondering what stuff are you brushing on the oil pump gears 0:37?
@Wired1
@Wired1 12 жыл бұрын
Would have been grease - it helps prime the oil pump the first time you turn it over then blends in with the oil after that.

Complicated way to install pistons and cylinders. Oh the P&C's need some type of sealant even if its just hi temp silicone. Otherwise they'll leak.
