Hey, I wanted to thank you for taking the time to share this video. You just saved me hundreds of dollars in costly parts that would not have fixed the issue I was having. The battery I recently purchased died. I took my ride, a 2003 VW GTI to get the battery and charging system checked. Their testing gear said it was a bad regulator. I was shown multiple options costing up to $300 for a new alternator. I figured the cheapest way to go was to see if I could find one at a salvage yard. I checked the area yards and there was a 2002 GTI that was recently acquired. So, I prepared my tool bag and planned to visit the yard in the morning. I thought it might be a good idea to view a few videos about the removal of the alternator to learn what tools I might need to do the job of pulling an alternator in the yard. I checked your how-to video first. You mentioned in passing the specific wire that leaves the fuse panel that's located on top of the battery and connects to the alternator. You also shared that sometimes the issue isn't the alternator but it could be the cable or the fusible link it's connected to. I checked the fuse panel and the fusible link connected to the alternator cable looked oxidized and a little warped. So, I removed it from the fuse panel, and used a special tool to flatten it. Then I used some fine grit sandpaper to remove most of the oxidation. I also I used some small wire brushes to clean the oxidation from the threaded post, the nut, the washer , and the cable end. Afterward, I returned to the parts store to have them check my system again and everything passed! One oxidized connection was the only issue. And your comment aimed my investigation in the right direction. Thank You!

That bottom stud you hooked up first was for the ground wire correct. When I took my alternator off the nut was off the bottom stud and there was a pretty big ground wire laying there. Like a # 6 size ground wire with a ground lug. It looked like it went over that bottom stud, but not sure. Thanks in advance

I was wondering if the rear cover of the alternator is replaceable? If it is i could source one from a local pic n pull wrecking yard. Or do i have to buy a whole new alternator,? Because where the connector that extends out of the rear cover broke off, and now I can't plug the harness into the alternator. Thanks

Just a tad bit curious why if I'm removing the alternator to put a new one in would I even care to touch the bushings in for it to be allowed to go back on the car? Na I'd rather just install the new one! Thanks for the video...

If you have a clutch on the alternator, you will need the tool to remove it and put it on the new alternator. Some have them but most do not. Thanks for watching!

Is there no timing? Does the 2.0 have accessory belt and a timing belt. Or is is all 1 belt. If so, don’t you need to time the engine again?
@AutoScholarwithMrB21 күн бұрын
@@zeuss1353 it has a serpentine belt and a timing belt. Two separate systems. Removing the belt from the alternator is the serpentine belt, no timing required. I hope this helps!

Is there a way to tell how many amps there are in my alternator without removing it? I have a 2003 Golf MK4 hatchback 1J1 automatic transmission. Is it 90A?

@AutoScholarwithMrB4 жыл бұрын
Some of these had one or two wire plugs. The one wire plug was on the 2.0 only I believe. The mounts may also be different but I can’t be too sure. Let me see what I can find. Very good question!

I own a VW Golf mk4 2.0 and it actually has a 2 wire plug. I also have an alternator from a 1.8T mk4 and that one has a 1 wire plug. Maybe useful info for someone out there.
