This is exactly what I have to do on my '70 beetle. Thanks for this video. Even JBugs video isn't this thorough. I'm by myself with no help, so lifting the fan shroud up and removing the alternator and fan is where I'm at now in this process. I didn't know I had to remove the oil cooler duct stuff. Pulling the engine out is my last resort to remove the intake and heat riser. I'm going from single carb to dual.

The icing is caused by the Bernoulli principle in operation. When pressure decreases (and the velocity increases) in the Venturi of the carb, the temperature drops. You're right, it's exactly what happens in a fridge. Incidentally, what I did when removing the alternator on my beetle was I removed the pedestal studs from the case which allowed me to pull the pedestal out and remove the alternator. Easy until a stud breaks! Great video by the way! Lots of great info there.

Thanks! I'd seen a lot of videos on how to remove an alternator from a beetle but not many on how to do it with a bay. Currently drilling through the carbon deposits in the heat riser, I would say it hasn't been cleaned in a few decades!
