Update 3/10/2022
I do not recommend doing this mod. Read on. Thanks for looking.
I will be re-doing this video soon. 8/1/20.. While this will work good I have found that the internal resistor is a bit low and could be changed to 33 ohms. It is more work but I feel the change reduces the heat generated by the circuit. One could eliminate the package and put the diode and resistor external on the gauge with 1/4" male and female terminals on to attach to existing wiring and gauge. Use some protection to avoid shorting out.
Changing the Zener 5.1 volt 5 watt Zener diode to 7.5 volt 5 watt to compensate for the increased resistance of the non OEM gauges. OEM gauges are 18 ohm. After Market are 34 ohms.
When replacing the Zener calibration of the 34 ohm gauge will be needed otherwise the needle will peg. See the calibration videos.
After more work trying to get this design/modification to work I am recommending that this is not a good workable design.
See my videos about the buck regulators.
