VW Beetle Dash Pad Replacement: Episode #5

Wow! It's the final episode. Love how it turned out and I'm very happy. Despite the issue on the corner I pushed through and got it done. Sorry the videos are so long but I really wanted to cover everything and really educate those who are looking to do this task (of course I learned as I went along).

Hey thanks for these vids showing how to replace the dash. After watching, I was able to replace the dash in my 1970 beetle. Some previous owner had stuffed a later model super beetle dash into it!

Well with the help provided by your videos, I removed my old padded dash. I have a new pad on the way, but I must say I am going to try every way possible to refinish the metal dash before I go any further. If I cannot get the metal dash to look good enough for me, I will install the pad. Thanks for these videos.

Made my day here in the IOM, seeing all that graft paying off for you, you are a Champ. My Bug does not have the fancy black single piece plastic trunk back of instruments tidy, where do they come from please? All we got in UK was fancy piece of cardboard which is fraying!

What phone mount do you use? I like that positioning a lot. Great job with the dash too

Thanks! At 12:15 in the video I mention it. It's a Steelie Nite Ize. There are a bunch of different mounts from them but I just went with the original and made a little bracket to wedge between the dash and ashtray. I used that little bracket to stick the bearing to as opposed to sticking directly to the dash. Works great!! Very happy with it. I can pop it right off and make it all look stock in literally 2 second. Here's a link to their site and the one I used. Nice job! Is it possible to remove the speaker grills without taking anything else apart? I just want to paint them.

xrayiz67 doubt it but you wouldn’t need to take much apart. Some vent stuff in the trunk and a few other little things maybe to get access to everything you need. It’d be pretty simple. Don’t be scared. Go for it.

surlycrosscheck1 the back of the clips have dried putty over them , guessing they’ve never been removed.

xrayiz67 interesting. Never seen dried putty on the clips before. Hopefully they are still intact and that isn’t someone’s Mickey Mouse way of repairing broken clips. Maybe VW did that at some point but I can say for sure. Sorry. I say go for it anyway. I know I would.

Where did u get the Big VW logo between the speakers?

xrayiz67 I got it YEARS ago. It was sitting in the mud on the ground in a junk yard. It was pretty rough. Hung on my wall for 25 years until I figured it would work perfectly for my speak shelf I was making. Fixed it up and put it in place. Worked out well.

surlycrosscheck1 is it from a VW Bus? & do you like the front kick panel speakers? Do they get in the way much?

xrayiz67 yes. It was from an old bus. Lower speakers are great (not super high quality but help fill the car with sound). I force the rear JBL’s to do most work though. ;-)......and no, the lowers don’t get in the way.
