I'm about to replace the rear main seal - so my transmission has to separate from the engine to gain access. In my case, the vehicle also has 4-Motion AWD. The service manual states I need to remove the AWD bevel gear box and the driveshaft going towards the rear of the car and even the exhaust pipes. You think there is a way to separate the transmission from the engine without all that additional fuss?
@saneauto7 жыл бұрын
I know it sounds like a lot of extra, but no trans comes out without the driveshafts. And lots of them are easier to remove when you take the exhaust out. Be prepared there's a lot more to it. Keep everything well organized and labeled as you take it out.
@ACitizenOfOurWorld7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the reply. We already replaced the waterpump after it failed and did a preventative "we're not taking a chance on this one" timing chain tensioner replacement with VW's revised design. This will be our most involved service procedure.

Take some pictures with your camera phone of wire connectors, brackets etc. to help with the reinstall. You can put masking tape on wire connectors and write something on the tape to help with remembering where they plug in.

did you have to reprogram the TCM, or do you know if you swap trans do you have to reprogram?
@saneauto7 жыл бұрын
I have R&R quit a few transmissions in these and other vehicles that require programming. Some of them I have gotten away with not reprogramming. Others just would not work right without it. Its really a crap shoot and you could damage a good transmission. I will try this one on the lift when Im done without the programming first if it feels ok i will road test it and let you know. I may make a video after I publish my install video.
@ScoutsOut7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the response, if you do have to reprogram is there scan tool you know that will d it or do you take it to the dealer

Quick Question Is there a difference in the 09G Transmission vs HTU Transmission?
@saneauto3 жыл бұрын
Thank you for commenting. HTU is just the "door code" indicating that the vehicle is equipped with the 09G transaxle

I know this video has been posted for some time now but, my daughter's 03 has some issues where the trans will engage at about 2000 rpm's. Is it possible that the tps is giving errors causing the shift issues? Also, did you have to keep some power to the car for the security system?
@nuklhed15 жыл бұрын
TCM Sorry
@saneauto5 жыл бұрын
I doubt its electrical the clutches are probably burnt already. You wont have to maintain power to the car while replacing the transmission. If you want to maintain just enough power to be sure you dont lose your engine management programming and keep all your radio presets and trip meter clock etc. All you need is this cheap little tool. amzn.to/2Yoo2Le Its the same as the one I have and used for customer cars for over 20 years and mine still works.
@nuklhed15 жыл бұрын
@@saneauto You say clutches, I'm not sure if that's what was meant, ours is the 6 speed automatic. Thanks for replying!

I came across an 04 convertible Beetle with the 2.0 engine for sale for what appears to be a good price. The owner says her Ex. had the engine rebuilt in December, but ever since then, the automatic transmission doesn't engage (her words)??? She says it needs a transmission, a GGZ, and that the engine runs. Can you think of any reason, other than it needing a transmission that might explain that? Could the crank shaft be broken where the flex plate attaches? Just seems a little fishy to me. Maybe the linkage isn't connected?? Why would the trans go out at the same time that the engine is replaced? If I buy it, I would put a used trans in it if it needed one. Can I get the trans out of it without a lift? What's a fair R&R charge if I decide to hire it out? 16 hours? I've been working on engines since I was about 12 too, but never as a source of income. I'm 63. Lately I've been working on Diesel Light Towers, still learning, had never worked on diesels before.... Thanks, Paul
@saneauto6 жыл бұрын
Most likely they did something like: left the torque converter bolts out of the flex plate. Ive never seen a broken crank on one of these. Your right to suspect the linkage too. check the fluid and all wire connectors.
