Oh, I hope you get notifications of comments for your older videos! Thank you so much for this. It gave me the confidence and, more importantly, the knowledge to be able to do this on my 1996 Mexican. Sloppy, sloppy shifting, grinding when down-shifting from 3rd to 2nd because it was trying to go into reverse. It was not a good scene. I gathered the parts (shifter bushing with ring, grease, twine rope, cage with all hardware and bushings and set out to rectify the situation. Good thing I had watched your video b/c my twine rope broke and I had to "manually" feed it through. DON'T use twine. However, I was prepared for almost any situation due to your video. Except that the cooler hoses for the factory installed air conditioner go through the tunnel and out the front cover so pulling the shifter rod was a little tight. But success was had, all thanks to you!! Rock on bro! You are the best!

Just replaced the shift coupler and shift rod bushing on my 78 super beetle convertible. No play and vibration noise anymore. Very responsive shifting now. I got the parts from JBugs. Thanks for the video. Very helpful. I used the rope as you did and the shift rod was led back into position without hanging up. Great video and tip! Thanks

Great video, thanks for all of them you put out. I just replaced my bushing alone. My trans is out so I used your string idea but ran it to a pulley behind the car and pulled the string myself as I fed the shift rod through. Thank you again, keep them coming.

When I bought my Beetle I inspected the coupler and the bushings were still soft, sincethe shifter wasn't sloppy I thought the bushing was OK. While replacing the carpet I found that the bushing was worn out. So, I'm waiting for the parts. There's no wear on the yoke, but it has to be done sooner rather than later. Thanks for, yet again, a no nonsense video.

Thanks for showing your mistakes!!! I was hoping you would show the shifter install because my “finger” isn’t getting into the slot in the front of the shift rod (‘66) so the shifter rotates. I noticed your rod sits really high in the tunnel so I’m going to use a dental mirror to examine the bushing. I guess it could be the spring needs to be stretched…

Great informative video! 😁👍 I haven’t yet done one yet though, but I’m sure to do it as you instructed. Makes me wanna cut the top half of a tunnel on a rust up chassis I have. Just to show the complete insides. All the tubes as you showed. I’ve gotta cut it up for scrap anyways. I want the front beam mount to make a jig to narrow a beam in the future. So why not?🤔😃👌

@@SladesVWBeetle I'm changing the one on my '72 Super Beetle as I write. Mine has no access plate either. There's two bolt heads up front but there is no plate under them to remove. The entire front bulkhead is one large piece that goes all the way across the front and it looks as though I'd have to remove half the front underneath sheet metal to get that large panel off. The last foot of the rod towards the transmission is a little rough. I wish I could get it out to smooth it out.

Thank you! this is very informative, I will actually be working on this next month... I have a couple of questions if that's ok: 1. I read somewhere that it is possible to do all this without removing the shift rod since the super beetle has "enough room" up front, is this true/advisable? 2. There are mixed opinions on whether we should use safety wire on the shift rod, what's your advice? Thanks again!
@SladesVWBeetle
@SladesVWBeetle 3 жыл бұрын
Your very welcome! You don’t have to remove the shift rod completely, but you should. Here’s why! There’s a lot of build up on the rod from over the years. I prefer to wire wheel and put fresh grease on the rod, so it moves smoothly through the new bushing. It truly makes a big difference! What do you mean by safety wire?

For the shifter coupling, I use the original metal cage and make or cut out of the bushings pieces from thick rubber material from old sandals soles. I made the replacements for my 1971 Super Beetle five years ago and they are intact and work perfectly. Here my video showing how to make them: kzbin.info/www/bejne/hqCyZoCuf5Wema8

@@SladesVWBeetle I will take a photo of the material I used. The problem was that I went to the local auto parts and they did not have it and I need to drive that car right away. Looks like you have essential tremor which makes your hands shake. Ive had it since I was 20. Im 65 now. Try cbd gummies. I take 5-10 mg a day and am totally cured after taking meds for 40 years with no help. This isn’t a commercial and I dont sell it. When you buy it make sure you get “full spectrum” cbd if not its junk. You should see it clearing up after about 2 weeks. My wife also takes it from a nasty case of fungal meningitis because her nasty drugs to kill the meningitis gave her toxic nerve damage. She is now tremor free. Good luck & let me know how it works. You’ll thank me.

@@Willyamsii no, they will be different. On the 73 super beetle that I had, in the front, you have to loosen the bolts to the sway bar. And up inside, where the shift tube would come out, you will see 2- 10 mm bolts on the bulkhead. When you remove those. You will pull the front, part out, and down to the ground and then you will see the access hole. It’s so hard to describe on here because I can’t put photos on the comment section.
