VW BUS - 395 Alabama Hills Lone Pine Overlanding Camping Freezing Weather & Amazing Arches

Part 3 of 3 - Hard to find a first-come Campsite in the late afternoon, Man I was bugged out.. Look at The Views Folks! Alabama Hills, I only was able to spend a couple days there. Definitely going to revisit Alabama Hills in the near future. I did a couple hikes and the one on the Mobius Arch Loop Trail was no disappointment. Let me know what you think.
The Cold! It played havoc on my video production. The intro audio was not happy and on the early morning hike, I went through three batteries in 15 minutes. I had to place them in front of the heater and recharge them when I got back.
By far my favorite outing yet. From the scenic view up Hwy 395 and the hike around Alabama Hills. Not much rough terrain is other than the washboard roads.
I did patronize the local shops in Lone Pine Ca. Sticker, Beanie, Hiking gloves, and a pack of AA batteries.

My buddy and I 4 wheeled all over Mojave and Death Valley. We'd sit around the fire with adult beverages and he tell stories about he and another friend bouncing around the desert in a VW van. He swore that van could go anywhere. I used to doubt him until I saw your videos! Keep rockin' it!

Larry, you should get yourself a 'gear-shift extension.' I installed one on my '61 panel, and it puts the shifter right at your right knee. Should have added it DECADES ago. Love your videos. I sure miss driving those trails in California back in the '80's.

I’ve owned a lot of VW Buses in my time and this is the only one that never had a shifter extension. I like it without. (Delong) 😊

My 7 year old and I watched this morning. He loved it! He was wondering how you can fit so much stuff inside your bus. lol. He said he wants to go with you someday so that he can climb on all the rocks. 🙂 Mt Whitney and the range looked beautiful! I always wanted to hike that mountain, but never got around to it. And now I have knee issues. 👎

I picked up a nice little 1969 Coleman 502 this week locally while out looking for a lantern. Pulled the generator out and cleaned up lots of sooty residue that was plugging it up, and actually got it to light up. The Coleman bug has bitten me. Looking forward to using it on the next camping outing.

We used to camp there twice a year. Over the years it got more and more visitors, then when the pandemic hit the city folk/non outdoor people came out and left trash and tore the place up. So the Bureau of Land Management had to reclassify areas to minimize the impact on the land. Unfortunately it left less places to camp. It is a beautiful area with a lot of history.

Well then it’s a good thing to limit the number of campsites. It was super clean, No trash at all. Every where I travel to I get a bag of trash. Not there🙂

This past November I rolled thru Alabama Hills and all the good camp spots were posted Day Use Only. Friggen Gov'ment! Glad I left California.

I am so slow on repairs I get one done, drive for a few months, then start a new project that takes her down for too long. I am lame that way. So how many miles do you think yah might have on that engine and trans? just curios. when the 70s done (back together and running, not restored) Mama and I want to do some of those trails in ur vids. Keep that sales flap flappin!!

Well, The engine came out of a $500. 1970 bug I bought 5 years ago. The trans was a core a friend gave me out of his 66 double cab. He lowered his bus. So mileage is unknown. As for the trails, some easy and some are hard. Monsoons last summer beat-up some of the trails so be careful. You'll both love the views!

Hey 👋 It must of been 8/10 miles. At the first spot I started to set up camp, only to find out that it wasn’t a spot for camping. Kept driving, I was truly lucky to get the site I found. There is camping outside of the park everywhere. Dry Camping - No amenities. So no real worries. Thank for watching 😊 I can’t wait to spend more time there.

they closed alot of ALabama hills due to all the knuckleheads who decided to trash the area during Covid. Ruined it for us veterans who have been coming here for 30 years.
