VW bus reduction box straight axle swap

I remember back in the 70's my dad's partner at the VW shop was going to do a transmission swap after they closed the shop, we opened up the next morning and his bug was still on the rack, my dad looked at me and said " He forgot the transmission was out of a bus " ..... when Ray came in he was hanging his head down and laughed, he said it has 4 gears in reverse and one forward gear !

What was that about flipped ring gear ? I though, you could take 68 beetle transmission as it is, change the nose cone, get modified spring plates, modified rear drums for wide 5, and get down the road ?? And continue to do full modification by adding disc brakes with lowered front spindles ?

That is for the folks that want to use their bus transmission my friend! And yes you are absolutely right a 67-68 tranny or a type 3 will work with no issues.

i am building a mid engine rail with a 2.3 lima. flipping the ring gear in the transaxle will weaken it. how hard will it be to put bus reduction set up on an irs suspension? putting them on would make flipping the ring gear unneeded.

@@tobyfaas8070 for a reduction setup you will have to change the spring plates, not sure for irs! I’ve never worked with mid engine before.

Can you do a video on reversing the gear on a bus trany...I'm thinking of doing that to my 62 bus with 67 axles and vw thing rear drums...

can you expand on the brakes? i'm thinking of using my existing bus transaxle so i'll be flipping the ring gear and installing an old speed straight axle kit. i heard you need a type 3 or thing backing plates and brakes but is that only if i swap a bug trans in? can i use my bus brakes?

I’m going to use beetle disk brakes on my 66, I’m sure the bus brakes do not fit the beetle axle, but if you can make them fit more power to you. And yes type 3 brakes or thing brakes, these brakes are much bigger than regular beetle and will fit the axles.
