VW Bus Stuck in a field since 1969! Will it budge?!?

Last driven to San Fransisco in 1969, and parked in a field since! will we be able to get this Bus home in one piece? watch and see as we buy and haul our next project home!
Hoping this will become a restoration series as I try and bring this 1961 Mango Splitty back to life!

I learned to drive in my parents’ Vauxhall Victor station wagon. I could parallel park it like a pro. That car went round the clock 4 - yes FOUR - times and the only repairs it ever had was the clutch (multiple times). My mother was a clutch rider of note. EDIT: I just remembered its registration number 55 years later - RSB 8736. (Southern Rhodesian registration)

I learned how to drive in 1981ish in a VW van of the late 70s. Plate 144 STA. It had a permanent camper poptop and was highly susceptible to catching side winds. I learned how to syncro shift just for the fun of it. We travelled across the USA in it in 77. It was called Miles Portly and had a turtle on the front tire cover.

I'm reminded of sitting in a barn and watching my grandfather restore an oak buffet. He would ask my opinion frequently. I am 12. I love restoration stories. I was 9 when this VW rolled off an assembly line and get so excited with your adventures Alex.

I love to do restoration of old Hoosier Cabinets, Sellers Cabinets, hutches, massive, solid wood kitchen tables, I’ve restored 4 vintage vanities from the 1940’s and all but 1 had the original mirror. I’ve completely restored a vintage sleigh bed w/matching wardrobe, chest of drawers, nightstands/end tables, etc. I love removing the layers of time and the “looks” that have come and gone with eras and their fads. I reupholster furniture as well. I am not a fan of kitchen 🪑 though. The old ones have such ornate detail work that it is time consuming and tedious work to get into those tiny nooks and crannies.

That Vauxhall Station Wagon is quite rare, especially in the UK, and it would be great if it could be salvaged. The ‘Splitty’ is lovely especially the colour.

I’ve always had a tendency to anthropomorphize things and I think that van looks very happy to know that it’s going to get a second chance to live. My friend recently bought a 60s era restored Volkswagen Beetle and it is amazing how much attention they get. It’s weird because when I was young they were still all over the place and there was even a mechanic’s shop that specialized in them we used to pass to go to the mall. Then they made the modern re-issues in the 90s but it’s even rare to see one of those now.

Congrats on the find and the extraction. I found a 58 years ago which later spent time under different ownership as a chicken coup then sold for 10 times what I paid for it(500). Glad your is in much better shape, best wishes for the resto

We always bring a shovel and dig little ramps in front of the tires of vehicle we try to recover. Really reduces the stress on the pulling straps and frame of the vehicle. Glad she popped loose!

My first car that I could buy new on my own was VW Beetle semi standard and a small sun roof that was cool, oh and the color was red. All you had to do was change the rear motor every 60 miles. I loved it. The Van that some friends had, brought back many good memories and sweet smells, haha. But we were good kids compared to todays. Just started watching your channel last week. Thought I'd share some experience: Next time you wanna do an extraction again, make sure to bring two bottle jacks and your favorite rust release. You could have raised the wheels out of the muck to get them unstuck there, and you would have found your front wheels to be locked and could have pre soaked and/or broke them free. Tips and tricks are good. May our Father bless and guide you and your family.

Most of the "old timers" would keep old equipment and vehicles in order to have a handy supply of things to "make do". In other words, they never knew when there would be a need for a part to repair another vehicle or equipment. And since, the farms were usually way out in the sticks - it would be too much of a nuisance to try and drive into town for a part. They could cobble together a repair and get back to work. Now, we can order something on line and have it delivered for a repair. This kind of thinking probably arose from the Depression when every one just had to work with what was available.

When you bought the Rolls Royce I left a comment to say I live very near Crewe where they are made. Now you are thinking about restoring a Vauxhall and I live 7 miles from the Vauxhall factory in Ellesmere Port. By the way my cousin's husband works at Ford in Canada. My Dad drove a tanker for Mobil and my ex husband worked at Shell(now Essar), finally my daughter in law works for Exxon Mobil in Texas. I am in the UK.🙂

Derrick from Vice Grip Garage taught me to never hook to the trailer ball. They are not the strongest point and if they break, you have a high speed and heavy projectile heading somewhere.
