@SladesVWBeetle thank you. This video was helpful. I'm a first time beetle owner and it's time to do an oil change. From what I can see it looked as though it was pretty straightforward and after watching your video I see that it is. However, I'm glad you made this video because you never know when there may be one little detail about something that is not apparent that can be detrimental. What is your opinion on external oil filter system? I have also seen a, I guess you would call it an extended sump that bolts in the spot where the cover and filter screen are located. They are for the purpose of increasing your oil capacity. They claim that it helps the engine to run cooler. I have a 79 super beetle and I live in south Florida. Currently I have no issues with it running hot but I was curious if there would be any advantages to using these items.

@@jackblack9208 first of all thank you for taking out the time to leave a comment and watch the video. Honestly I like adding at least a 1.5 quart extra some oil pan as what I refer to it as. That little extra oil equals 4 quarts of oil which makes him run a little bit cooler. I also like the addition of an oil filter, of course it will keep the oil much cleaner.

The tips on ft lb torque was great and 2.6qt reassured me of what I was doing as a newbie. Only odd ball thing that occurred is one of the stud bolts kept falling off if I tightened it up beyond finger tight. I guess the bolt is stripped - it starts gets tight then bam, drops right off. Have tried different nuts and they all do it. I’m perplexed….but no leaks.

I burnt up my engine using full synthetic oil. I thought I was doing a good thing but found out that synthetic oil does not carry heat. So I will NEVER use it again in my VW. As for the shifters, I have an altered Scat Drag Fast shifter in Henry my 73 standard. I altered it so I could use an Ivory Hurst T Handle and a Hurst 2 finger pull handle for the reverse lock out. I looks COOL but I don't really like how it shifts. When I bought Bernadette my 73 Super, she came with an Empi clone of the old VW Hurst shifter. I really like the way it shifts. SMOOTH. I WOULD HOWEVER LIKE TO TRY ONE OF COOL RYDES CUSTOMS SHIFTERS. I'VE HEARD THAT THEY SHIFT REALLY NICE.

So which oil do you use? Weight and brand. Ok I'm sorry to bring the ill fated question in the open. I have empi, hurst, scat bugpack and gene berg shifters. The best with linkage and rev lockouts it seems the Hurst works best on my ghia and bugpack on my bug. Seems the others have a great deal of play.

I watched another video and the plug was 21 mm- does it vary? 1971 with a god given plug. My opinion on the plug presence. I have to buy it and have no way to measure what is there now. As they say, pray for me. I will have to crawl under the car but it sets higher than my Prius!
