vw crafter faulty aux belt tensioner replaced & alternator upgraded to 180amp
last week while out and about i notice a really bad smell and noise coming from the van, after some investigation I found the cause, a damaged auxiliary belt and a faulty belt tensioner, but did a broken alternator do all this damage?

Mine was making a strange squeaking noise right after going in to VW for a cam belt/aux belt change. 4 months later the belt failed because the tensioner worked loose and sheared off due to not being tightened up correctly. Sometimes the main dealer garages are incompetent. Love your work, helped me out no end.

I have no faith in main dealers either mate bad experiences in the past with a previous van

What a coincidence! My aux belt tensioner has also gone causing slack belt (although it’s the Sprinter engine). Replaced now and new belt but still have a screech on tick over. Guessing it’s possible alternator clutch. It will be good to get it sorted for the new season. 😎👍

@@TheCraftyBlindersvanlife thanks mate. Belt tensioner replaced but the alternator one way pulley is seized. Next job, my mate has a puller which can do just the pulley so hopefully no need for the whole alternator to be replaced. Wish us luck 🍀

Oh Sam, glad you sorted it, my alternator pulley seized after my last drive from UK to Finland, I was so lucky it snapped whilst outside my old apartment rather than the long drive across Poland. Surprised your 2.0 having a smart alternator, mine has a normal one.

I am continuously amazed, how you stand up to the moody weather and awkward placement of the doodats on the Crafter engine design and manage to film all of that in such detail. Stuns me every time. My timing belt, waterpump, belts and such were a dealer service just prior to actually buying the van, so I probably have some grace period before I need to get into this stuff. And I do cheat, as I have all the Crafter factory repair manuals to check on the sequence of the neccessary tasks. That does in NO WAY replace a video such as this one for the hands-on experience. On my 2015 Crafter the tensioner pulley wheel broke up that in turn shredded the belt, that then got caught up around the crank Pulley and worked its way under the timing cover shredded rubber got between the crank toothed gear and the timing belt, in turn the valve timing was thrown out so rockers broken bent valves also camshafts had the lobes knocked out of presision, so needed new cams as well, luckily no piston damage. So if you hear a noise like spinning wire STOP ENGINE immediately!!!

Great video Sam... I could feel your pain! Kinda why I love my Sprinter (OM646 engine), it's so easy to work on in comparison to your Crafter. I'm after replacing the alternator clutch pulley which proved to be a lovely little job.

For a non aircom 2.0, what parts are relevant. 2 belts, tensioner. Is there one idler or two? Do idlers need changed?

Do you have the part name and number for the new 180A alternator? was the 140A also an upgrade? I replaced the tensioner last year this time. It was the same noise, also the power steering halted, so the tensioner was totalled. But the alternator seem to have been collecting sand and has a noise itself. Heard from others, that the belt throws sand and moisture into the alternator and it eventually kills it.

it's a tailgater tyre table @£165 save yourself some money and just google 4x4 tyre table on Amazon for £90 and I've even seen them on Tumu for £40

My Idler roller bolt came loose and then the roller nearly came off and the fan belt started to rub and burn.
