what is even more mind blowing: how is more diesel fuel burned to produce less emissions better than burning less fuel to begin with?
@PaleHearse
@PaleHearse 8 жыл бұрын
+canadacatalyst It sends unburnt fuel into the cat. The unburnt fuel raises the heat in the catalytic converter. Basically making it more efficient at trapping the particulates. The urea injector system does the same thing but in a slightly different way.

canadacatalyst Not only that, but the added back pressure, ect reducing power means you're going to give the engine more throttle, i.e. more fuel, at any given rpm to do the same work. Sad thing is, we went through all this government inference crap back in the 70s with gas engines and looking at modern diesels it's like we didn't learn a damned thing. I'm amazed modern diesels even run with all the bullshit between the turbo and the tail pipe, not even counting all the shit cobbled on the intake side. That's one of the reasons I'm sticking with my second gen Cummins. The only thing between the turbo and the tail pipe is the muffler, and even that is optional.

You guys are all missing the fact it is not the mileage that matters, it is the grams of particulate matter and milligrams of nox, exiting the exhaust, that they care about. So yes, you burn more fuel but you are left with less than 6 grams of soot (particular matter) per horsepower, per hour. that is honestly fucking remarkable. the emissions crap does work, and it works fucking well, just expensive and problematic another sidenote, I work on class 8 trucks. 10 years ago, if you were running a truck in the shop for longer than it takes to build air, half the shop would be yelling to get the hunk of shit outside. nowadays, trucks are often left idling inside the shop, and not one person pays any attention to it since the shop isn't half smoked out.

One thing I don’t understand is how when I got my truck (2005 f250 yes it’s a 6 liter) it got about 13 mpg with the cat muffler and egr, then I straight piped it, put a cold air intake, and bought an sct tuner, now I get 20 mpg, so that just really makes me think, is all the emissions control really worth it, why not instead of emissions control, manufacturers just have to meet fuel economy regulations like let’s say all new diesel need to get 22mpg, that sounds way more practical but also saves our environment while also saving our vehicles reliability

It not about fuel mileage it’s about NOx emissions among other gaseous emission begin pumped into the atmosphere. I’ve got an engine builder who claims that I could get nearly 25-30+MPGs out of my ‘12 f150 eco boost by deleting my cats and he could also give me 500+hp and torque at the same time with headers and bigger turbo but he admits that it’ll spit pollution like crazy.

@@gibsonwill18 Maybe he's not as pollution as he believes because whit no cleaning the pollution is bound to the big black particles who never reach the atmosphere! It is mostly a city problem when it is good for the plants in not-so-populated areas... The best cleaning would be to get bigger and heavier particles that just stayed a very short time in the air!

Thank you so much for bringing up "poor" countries like Burkina Faso. I do business with mainland China, and the pollution there is just unreal in comparison to Ontario or even London (which half the cars are "dirty" diesels). People in civilised countries have no idea just how dirty the air is for these places and just how clean the cars like the VW TDIs are in comparison. Once people live by an open sewer, or sit by a trash fire, slow down to 15 kph because you can't see from smog, and watch 20 and 30 year olds die of lung cancer or asphyxiation, then we'll talk about emissions, but until then I wish the intellectual idiots would stay out of our business and let the blue collar workers work. Modern diesel trucks produce tremendous power with very little emissions, which is a great thing. The issue is this has come at the expense of reliability and fuel economy. If you’re burning twice as much fuel in order to have systems in place that lower emissions, is it really better for the environment? I don’t see how it is.

A lot of people forget the emissions and pollution during production of cars. "Oh hey lets all buy super efficient new hybrids and save the planet" is probably the dumbest idea ever, according to some studies its appearantly up to 50% of a cars lifetime pollution that happens during production.. If we all kept our old cars going for as long as possible we'd probably do way more for the planet. They already "paid" their production emission cost.. I don't know if the canadian gouvernment is also pushing people into buying new cars? In germany we have a car tax (yearly payment if car is registered) that is designed to get old and inefficient cars off the road. The tax is calculated by engine displacement and emissions class, so the worse the emissions class (the older the car) the more tax you pay.. And of course the more displacement. Of course diesels without particle filter or other stuff have the worst emissions class there is together with gas engines without cat. Your 4BT Tahoe would cost a nice 1512€ per year, and a whopping 2288€ if it had a 5.9 in it instead. You'd need to drive a lot to save that amount of money in fuel..

Let me state, that my Jetta TDI has been a fantastic vehicle and because of the ridiculous EPA standards, we will no longer have these high performance, reliable, quiet, no smoke, 45 MPG vehicles again. Some are complaining, but who cares about the little bit of delay in receiving our much higher than value compensation. Great video and a fresh perspective on what Canadians think. I never quite understood the needed a 8 litre engine or bigger in a non heavy truck package. I have a 1.4 litre petrol engine on my car. Is it enough for me? No, but do I really need a 8 litre engine? No. And for my daily driving, do I really need more? Probably not. In Europe, personally, anything over 2 litre for petrol and 2.5 for diesel is just overkill, unless your towing or really want to do a track car or something special. My first car was diesel fuelled and one trend that I don't really like in modern diesels is decreasing displacement. On petrol cars, like the 1 litre EcoBoost, I don't have a problem with it, I even enjoy it quite a lot but on diesel cars, it just makes engines behave in ways that are not really natural. Diesels are supposed to be torquey and easy to to drive and the new diesel engines feel to me like the old turbocharged engines of the 80, laggy, unpredictable and really not that easy to drive contrary to the old school one like I drove. For example the Nissan 1.6 dci 130hp engine is powerful and has plenty of torque but the response is delayed, the pedal response is sluggish and it feels weird to drive. When you get to higher RPMs it it goes really fast but it feels more like a petrol engine than a diesel one.

I watched this when it you published it Rich. I have owned many VWs and was ASE master when I worked for a shop. The Gov't dictating to engine/vehicle manufacturers is total scam. Your a GM guy, remember the "low friction approach"? Which was to boost fuel economy, well it was basically low tension piston rings which led to massive oil consumption in gasoline engines. Now Honda and other manufacturers have followed suit. We end up with cars with 100,000 miles consuming several sump quantities of oil between oil changes. A quart/800 miles is average for a Honda... now this is better for the environment? Most of VW's cheating had to do with NOx reduction, EGR is murder on any engine, diesel EGR is even worse due to particulates. Lower fuel efficiency means cleaner exhaust. My cars from the 80s got better economy than a hybrid of today....

All I know is this.........My 2.0 TDi Amarok uses HALF the fuel that my Holden 3.6 V6 petrol did. VW have got their diesels running pretty sweet and are doing everyone a favor. Some ridiculous test of emissions doesnt help anyone. Anyway there are better ways to fix NOx and soot. A high efficiency (98% at 2 micron) celluslose filter thats removes the invisible water kills NOx dead. Soot can be fixed with LPG injection that burns everything completely in the engine ( maybe HHO gas injection?). Both these measures benefit fuel consumption dramatically compared to all the DPF/EGR etc crap.

I'm from OZ. I have a late 08 Golf. While under Warrentie, the DPF failed. VW wanted $$$$ claiming Consumable item. Govt. would do nothing as VW is too big to take on. So I cheated? and removed DPF. Re-tuned the car and what a difference. Now I have more power but interestingly better Fuel economy. More important, now the car does not blow smoke, where before with the DPF, all I saw in the rear vision mirror (mild to hard acceleration), was Black Sooty smoke. So in my case, less much less pollution, and Visible Pollution at that. In perspective, the car is now more efficient with less particulate escaping the exhaust. This has to be a good thing. But as the car is already made. replacing DPF would cause some pollution for manufacture re placement parts and supply (as well as the waist of precious metals). So here we save $$$ and pollution. Better economy. Again we save. Less fuel = less pollution. Less fuel = less pollution in supplying, transport and processing. And so it goes on. If we compare to earlier VW's (or any other car). Say a MK1 Golf GTI. This took a 1600 motor to produce power and pollution. Latter models raise the engines to 2000 & 3200 Liter. Ballpark figures, these newer cars with bigger engines perform similar. Sometimes getting better fuel economy sometimes not? But usually putting out less pollution??? NOT IN MY BOOK. These bigger engines put out more pollution? but they also put out more Air in the exhaust. In other words they dilute the emission out of the tail pipe. (A bit like mixing a strong Cordial Drink OR a weak Drink with plenty of water). I would bet in most cases. If you measured the Pollution in actual partials and not "PPM" (Partials Per Million) or percentage. ......... I say the older cars put out less. It is just that exhaust measurements by definition are more concentrated. Where latter cars have a Diluted emissions (just by using larger engines). Actual Pollutants is what we should be measuring and not percentages. Then think of the wasted resources and pollution in manufacturing not only new cars, but all this extra new technology.

Amen Flithy Rich! My boss has '12 Ram with a 6.7 Cummins and a 6 speed. He says it's has plenty of power but no fuel economy due to emissions. Like he says, it makes it thirsty, but clean, and nothing like his old 94 12 valve. I don't own a diesel pickup (yet), but have run diesels all my life from pickups to semis to tractors to combines and there is a reason they all went away from gas engines. Maybe the old 361 in the old 806 isn't the most efficient engine, but it's reliable and a power hound. Than again my brother's '11 ram with the 6.7l Cummins stock had no power and no fuel economy (literally 10 mpg). We fixed the power and and somewhat fixed the fuel economy (though we're still not happy at 12 mpg), but we had to gut all the emissions crap in the exhaust and throw EFI Live on it. At least it can safely get out of its own way now, much less when your dragging a loaded trailer. Where not out here to blow smoke and make noise, we just want enough power to do what we need to do.

I really wonder how clean diesel engines would be if we deleted all the exhaust emissions control systems (EGR, DPF, SCR), focused on making the engines as efficient as possible and tuning them not to run excessively rich. I bet we could come close to meeting current emissions standards, but getting way better fuel economy. The emission controls systems on gas engines have done their jobs really well, they've reduced emissions without causing additional problems to the engine and its operation. Diesel engine emission systems seem to have started on the wrong path, and with each subsequent emission system just being installed to offset the side-effects of the previous one. EGR reduced NOx, but EGR increased PM. DPF was invented to reduce the PM caused by EGR, but due to the extra fuel needed in general to overcome the backpressure and maintain the power, more NOx is created. So now, SCR was put in place to reduce that extra NOx. In this case, we should delete EGR and DPF, tune to reduce PM, see how high NOx is, and then maybe keep SCR to reduce NOx.

its kinda right. the software knew when the car was on a dyno (front tires turning, rear tires not). the ecu would then go into a different map to clean up the exhaust, which also resulted in less power. bosch was involved in making this special ecu as well.

Yes! The environmental impact of having to produce, and refine more fuel to make up for the increased consumption that comes from the knocking down from 90mpg to 45mpg after adding the emissions systems is worse than letting it run a little dirtier while burning half the fuel. The real reason is this is done is because rather than the cost being passed on to the oil companies, when demand for their product drops as a result of dramatically increased efficiency unless they double the cost of their product -- Yea, in terms of heavy vehicles they'd stay on diesel because of the energy density, but that kind of price hike would drive light vehicle owners to petrol overnight --, this way it is passed onto the consumer, who now has to buy double the fuel, without the consumer really noticing. Using double the fuel will have a greater environmental impact, even if the emissions are reduced by more than half. This is about profit, not the environment.

Your ramblings bring up some good points. I agree that blowing smoke or rolling coal or whatever you want to call it is giving diesels a bad name. Even before strict emissions diesel trucks were not smoking like the diesels of the 1960s. I'm guessing more precise injection technology made them cleaner and more efficient. Now with the EGR and DPF diesels are less efficient and therefore using more fuel and making more pollution in the long run. I also wonder how much pollution it causes to manufacture new vehicles. If we crush 100,000 VW diesels in running condition they have to be replaced and the refining of metals and plastics as well as the energy of manufacturing new vehicles probably outweighs the minor savings of pollution by getting these cars off the road. Yes VW broke the law and should be fined but for the environment probably the best thing would be for these cars to be used until they wear out. As for the $8 billion, how much is going to lawyers???

This reminds me of the 1977 or 79 ford mustang with the 4 banger engine. It had so much smog crap all controlled by vacuum pots with a spiders web of wires and vacuum lines. These things started going bad shortly after the cars were made. When that smog control stuff started failing it caused more emissions then if the car had been properly tuned. As a kid I rebuilt that engine and dutifully hooked up and replaced most of the emissions stuff that was bad and that car still wouldn't run right or pass any emissions. Finally I just threw all that emissions stuff in the garbage and tuned it up like I would any lawnmower or older engine. Finally it ran right and to my surprise passed emissions. Ironically with no smog control at all.

There were others that got worse too but they were backups for primaries, the 78 GMC got honorable mention even though it was a backup for the 57 just for being so awful. The 77 GMC worked because I only ran full loads and used the Couriers for 1-3 piece deliveries.

Here's an interesting point of view. The USA and Canada have absolutely enormous reserves of natural gas. Reserves so vast and cheap that they burn off the excess rather than pay to store it. If the US and Canada decided that a certain number of new vehicles (start at ~10% the first year) from each manufacturer had to be natural gas and stepped that up 2% each year until you hit 50% new spark ignition vehicles, you'd remove a whole lot more greenhouse gases from automotive use than dicking around with crippling automotive diesels.

In Ontario, to work at heights over 10' you are required to take a training course which costs around $100 when you are done. There is a little training course for every little safety issue. If I want to build a house, I will make sure I don't fall off by being a smart guy. If you feel unsecure, don't climb. Just make a tie-off and use it, there's no reason I need to be told to do this... It is a complete MONEY-GRAB and a waste of my time. I don't get unemployment because I am self-employed, I'm not spending my winter savings on training courses. i'll work under the table instead.

The only place the VW actually failed the test by producing excess oxides of nitrogen (the "up to 40% more" mentioned) was during the passing of tractor trailers going up a fairly steep grade, basically taking a fully loaded (max gross weight of passengers and cargo) VW with the the air conditioner on, flooring it at 45 mph (dropping it into second gear on the transmission) and winding it out until you complete the pass. This test was done going up the passes to Truckee and Tehachapi because the California EPA, DOT and CARB agents couldn't make the VW's fail the test (emissions grams per mile) during normal driving (or even during fairly aggressive driving). The VW's in question actually passed during the freeway on-ramp test because the only way they could get it to fail was to not require the on-ramp emissions to be averaged with the emissions from the rest of the mile driven. Simply stated, unless the only driving you do is aggressively driving up mountain passes, those VW's would, in fact, produce less pollution than most other diesel cars and use less fuel (which reduces CO2 emissions).

I enjoy your videos and you do some cool stuff but there is so much you don’t know about exhaust emissions requirements and why VW cheated. Why did VW cheat? - Management demanded they meet the emission requirements without using a DEF + SCR because it would cost less ($300/car). They used a lean Nox trap system located after the DPF. When the DPF is regenerated the much hotter exhaust degrades the Nox trap system to a point where it isn’t effective enough. They reduced how much the trap degrades by greatly reducing the DPF regens needed. Vehicles are required to meet the emission standards for the defined useful life of the vehicle. How did VW reduce the number of required regens? - They were able to detect that the car was not running on the EPA test but on the road and they advanced the injection timing, turned off EGR and stopped regening the lean Nox trap. The injection timing advance and turning off the EGR reduced the amount of soot coming out of the engine and increased the Nox which allowed the DPF to balance the amount of shoot and not plug. With less regens the life of the lean Nox was extended. Why should they be fined and jailed? - They broke the law. They had a cheaper system than the competitors who used DEF and SCR. The competitors systems performed properly over the useful life of the car and their’s did not. In use emission tests are a joke.

Deboss Garage: Love all the videos. Been looking into getting an 02 duramax and I've learned alot about diesels from your videos and your common sense on this subject is refreshing. As for Volkswagen, good for them for cheating the emissions tests. If Canada shut down tommorow we would likely see only a 2% decrease in global emissions(like you mentioned). And what the global warming alarmists never tell us is how the increased c02 in the atmosphere is actually making the planet greener, literally. I agree 100% about rolling coal its probably putting a black eye on diesel guys whether it does harm or not.

I would love to see you do something with an electric car. 2014 Chevy Spark has 400 ft-lb of torque, and can purchased for less than 7K (way cheaper if wrecked). I want to make a hybrid like the Chevy Volt, so I can run all electric or Diesel and Electric. Also I believe hydrogen fuel cells are a great way to go combined with electric and a small battery, so you can still use regenerative braking (get back power & save brake pads) Look up the hydrogen Chevy Colorado if you haven't seen it yet.

DEBOSS GARAGE I'm not sure yet. I own a Nissan Leaf & towed a Volvo S60 with it and it did extremely well for a car, but it was only for a mile or 2 and trains use electric motors, so I think it should be great for towing. I just found out I can get a tow hitch for my car, and I'm just about to move, so I’ll see how it does towing a small trailer. I have a 99 Blazer with a manual, that I'll use for my big stuff like cars.

We "all" driving small diesels in Europe and this crap will be huge here. VW cars with that engines are amongst the more expensive ones just behind Bmw, etc.. That is pure greed. Someone needs to go to jail and VW has to pay but they need to stay alive. Btw. my car drunks 4.6l/100km, highway mostly.. The best would be to leave the cars as they are without that crap and pay fines. People are not losing more than re-sail value and that needs to be covered. Most of them payed lover taxes anyway to start with..
