thanks jman, i am happy this tutorial could help. I am just a shade tree mechanic, but i used to do a lot of long distance driving in my bus with no safety net. You learn quick when you are broke, broke down, and 1500+ miles from home! 😂

When I was in Germany and I had my 65. It ran quite well and I had bought a system that ( supposedly ) changed the ignition to electronic. I put in the system, it ran good ( for one run ). When I shut it down, it wouldn't restart. Went back to points.

thats pretty unusual these days. the petronix or compufire electronic ignition is reliable long term, but i do coach my clients in switching out to points if it does fail. Usually i build them a backup distributor they can just pop in there. I run a subaru motor in my bus now, but all my clients have petronix and nobody has had a failure yet.

What would be symptoms of bad points or bad condenser?

How do you know a bad distributor signs

a distributor can fail in a number of ways. the armature everything spins around can wear out the guides it sits in, and you have a lot of up and down play, which can wreck the contact on the distributor cap. no contact, no spark. it can wear out horizontally, in which case it impacts how much the points open. this will cause inconsistent spark and your motor will run poorly. your vacuum can sometimes gets a hole in the plenum and you don't have any vacuum advance, which will result in boggy acceleration. your points could close up because the screw isn't tight enough. the points have a little block that rides on the lobes of the spinning armature, if this isn't greased, it can wear down or break resulting in close points. your condenser can fail and leave you with no spark. finally, i have seen the base clamp loosen up and change the timing so much that the motor no longer runs. hope that helps. maintenance is good.

GM, Ford and Mopar replacement points are JUNK. Save your old working points if you replace them.
