A stuck open injector will flood the cylinder with fuel, thus washing the oil film from the cylinder walls and dropping compression drastically. Had this happen to a brand new Mitsubishi. Compression read 40psi on the affected cylinder. Changing out the bad injector, pulling the spark plug and letting the cylinder air out overnight, and pouring a few teaspoons of oil into the cylinder to help restore compression fixed the problem. After just a little run time the compression was back up to 180+ psi. Not sure this is your problem, but it may have been, especially since these can periodically have fuel injector failures.

I believe this is what occurred from looking at damage on cylinder 1; I broke the motor down, working on getting the video out now. The top cylinder ring embedded itself into the cylinder wall, wish I could have tried the oil trick to see if anything compression returned. I'm considering flow testing the injectors to see if it's stuck open but it's pretty apparent because when I pulled the spark plug it was wet on cylinder 1.

I’ve had my 2015 tsi 1.8t jetta for 2 years, bought it at 88km, now at 170 000km, and I’ve had not problems at all, the engines runs strong. I do oil change every 8000km tho with synthetic 5w20 or 5w30 (as recommended in the manual). And FYI, I drive it very very hard every day..

I, too, had purchased a CPE 2015 VW - a Passat - with about 31,000 miles on it and I had to nurse it back to health as my car was a rent-a-car prior with likely inappropriate care. Technically, the maintenance schedule by VW is way off - oil changes should be every 2,500 miles, with filter change at 1,250 mile intervals and a Motor Flush at 10,000 miles with LiquiMoly 2037. I also have walnut cleaning done every 40,000 miles as well of the intake valves in the head. Catalytic converter cleaner should be run every 10,000 miles and injector cleaner every 5,000 miles. The maintenance schedule I use is exceedingly aggressive, I use Mobil 1 0W40 and original VW filters and do my own oil change using an evacuation pump and long plastic tube to remove oil through the dipstick. I do oil change when the engine is cold and most all oil is just sitting at bottom of pan. The advantage to changing oil "cold" is that all gunky oil is at the bottom of the pan and not fully circulated throughout the engine as when driven to the Jiffy Lube, etc. The extra expense of doing frequent oil changes in between the 10,000 recommended oil change schedule is about $200 + another $13 for the motor flush. The walnut blasting is $700. Basically, every 40,000 miles my basic engine maintenance is about $1,400 more than it should be because the EA888 Gen 3 1.8L engine should not need so much TLC but that there is no other way - I learned about all this AFTER I bought a car with a GDI engine that had inherently designed weak ring seals with looser tolerances; now I'm married to it and have to make the best of it. With TLC, my 2015 Passat should last 300,000 miles or more costing me some $10,000 more than anticipated for the pleasure. Essentially, I spend 3.5 cents more per mile ($1,400/40,000 miles) than what the VW maintenance schedule outlines. I can deal with it, most people won't. Following the recommended VW engine maintenance schedule is way too risky.

I have a 2017 Passat r line also with a 3rd gen and I've started being more aggressive with maintenance as well since I'm approaching 110k miles and I wanna avoid any issues heading forward. I don't plan on selling my car since it is an r line so hopefully we can both get to like 300k. I have a 2016 VW Golf MK7 1.8t manual that is getting close to nine years old that has had zero failures so far while running a stage one tune too. No oil usage and even the stock clutch is holding the increased power. I bought the car new for $17,830 including tax and license, so if it blew up today I still made out very well.

This is why I say people should buy new cars. That new car depreciation bs, was cancel out when you had to install another engine @ 87k miles. You bought it with 36k miles? There is no telling what the people did or didn't do before you bought the car. You are blaming VW for making a bad engine.

VW has an engine design that consumes oil and tells consumers to wait 10k miles between oil change intervals while oil levels become dangerously low; this exacerbates the issue causing more oil consumption due to wear on the piston rings eventually ending in failure. Attribute that to bad design or poor manufacturer guidance, either case this can happen to anyone new or used with enough time.

2015 Golf TSI 1.8T MK7, VW recommends 10k oil change interval on a lot of their more recent vehicles which shouldn't be dangerous but is when coupled with oil consumption.

@@MarkMethods So your car was burning oil? People are suppose to check their oil between oil changes. I go 8k miles between oil changes in my 2016 F150 with the 2.7 twin turbo. I'm up to 76k miles. I don't add oil but I'm down 1 quart.

The oil consumption was low initially, nothing needed to be added between; something accelerated wear or catastrophic failure occurred and caused the piston ring to fail. I'd keep topping the oil off, that's quite a bit to lose between changes.

2017 Alltrack coming up on the end of my lease, 4 years and 40k miles in and I am happily letting it go back to VW. I had two tdis (the sportwagen with 6 speed was fun) but between dieselgate, the crappy attitude of VW USA toward my 39,000 mile sunroof leak (basically lying to me until I confronted them with what google reveals) and the issues with this engine I will not be a VW owner again. I'm buying a Subaru. Wish VW was a more ethical company.

This K's very sad, but in Europe we have a lot of problems with the smaller TSI engines, which you do not have in the US such as the 1.2 TSI and the 1.4 TSI twincharged engine. I have just payed +$2000 USD to fix the timing chain issues on our 1.4 TSI. It is unacceptable, but VW from this generation sinnott what it used to be

Mark Methods Yes, let's hope. The smaller versions are very cool. The 1.4 is a twincharger with turbo + kompressor. We also have a never small 1.2 TSI with only a turbo, but with a timing belt instead of chain

More than likely the engine in your Golf was very low on oil. These direct injection engines will dilute the oil and will cause wear on the piston rings thus oil consumption.

Judging by the initial oil levels I would agree; it did seem low, a dealership was the last to change the oil after warranty service. I had checked it after the service and it appeared fine, no drops of oil on my garage floor; more than likely internal consumption. Still need to pull it apart and get down to it but I think you're probably right.

@@MarkMethods These modern direct injection engines can't be used like port injection engines, they will eat oil between oil changes, a lot of oil! The oil level must be checked every time you fill up the gas tank. Moreover, there's no oil level sensor warning... There is however, a low pressure oil switch/sensor that will get triggered if the oil sumps doesn't pick up oil during cornering or accelerating hard.

Growing up we had a 7.3 ford diesel with similar problem. Warranty was 6mo past and engine blew. Dealer said tough shit. Fortunately my dad shopped around and found a dealer that offered to discount the powerplant change by $500. So that's something.

2017 golf tsi I have had that coolant hose burst out as well by the transmount. Transmount stock is making some good noise. 290+ hp this car will need new motor and transmounts. Other than that I’m impressed with this car honestly first VW I’ve owned and it packs a punch on acceleration, numbers on the dash go up pretty quick too.

You must've had a headache with this engine failure . I read somewhere on the internet that volkswagen is getting sued for engine failures caused by timing chain...if it's that the case might be worth to give it a try! I change the oil every 5-6k miles and now I'm hearing like a timing belt whistle, but I'm pretty sure EA888 have timing chains...anyway diesel engines are much more reliable

I had a 2010 TDI, wish I kept it; best car I've had to date (although my Prius is turning out to be pretty good too). I wish it had been the timing chain if that's the case, don't see any stuck injector lawsuits yet but I won't be surprised if they come up.

I currently own a 2015 Jetta 1.8 TSI, with 127,500km on it. I also experienced a total engine failure due to a timing chain pre tensioner failure at 82,000 km. Just 2000 km past the full 4 year , 80k bumper to bumper warranty I was driving on the hwy at the speed limit 110kph when all of s sudden the engine felt rough, like i was on gravel, then the check engine light started flashing, I pulled over as quick as I could, and heard bang, bang, bang, bang bang... it litterally through a connecting rod through the side of the engine... after a month long fight with VW, They gave me a new engine, Full long block and heads

Is this a EA888 Gen2 or Gen3 engine? I see that you are missing the intake fuel injection which is on my Audi CJSB engine. I am now at 63k miles and had no issues with that engine although I push this engine pretty hard on the German Autobahn with full throttle runs for the entire fule tank. I do regular 12k miles Oil changes and drive gentle until reaching 90°C(194°F) engine oil temp. I am also only using Performance fule to get the engine cleaning benefits and prevent misfiring when the engine gets hot on longer full-throttle runs.

I believe it's a gen3 and one of the early models; judging from the damage on cylinder 1 it looks like a stuck injector caused the top piston ring to fail.

Which would be the better engines from VW? 1.8T ( 2017+ VW Golf) or 2.0T (2016+ VW Golf GTi or R) or are the 1.4's any good? I'd like to buy one in the next year but want to go with whichever is most reliable.

I think if you have your heart set on any VW, plan on cutting the oil changes in half and checking often to make sure you aren't low on oil due to consumption.

Had the mechanic do a piston cleaning with B12 and that did the job for the pistons. I now change the oil every 5K. 2016 Golf 1.8T DSG with close to 199K on it.

@@MarkMethods yeah I just had a major oil leak coming from my valve covers, re sealed them both and the oil pan as well, replaced all gaskets, but I pulled the spark plug from cylinder 3 due to a excessive knock code on that cylinder and it’s burnt out, white residue and the white tip itself looks to have melted in a spot or gotten way to hot, hoping after replacing the spark plug and maintaining proper oil level that it’ll be okay but will keep u posted

I come across this video because I have the same motor in my 2015 Jetta. I just cleaned the intake valves which were bad but I know I need to clean the injectors, I can only imagine how bad theyare. I’m afraid this is what happened to yours as others stated or in your cause it could have failed and stayed wide open. My engine has has 181,398. Yea I know a lot of miles but knock on wood,all is great besides before the carbon cleaning I was getting cold start misfires

I have the same problem. My 2014 1.8t burn oil since 70k .1 liter every 700 miles. Is very bad car. I called the vw dealer .they said its a normal for vw to burn oil !!!

@@midcenturymodern9330 So-so. It might not be normal for an average VW, bud sadly it's more or less "normal" for an 1.8TSI (constructed by Audi, used all over the VW group). I own a Skoda with the same engine, I got it cheap and when I first took it to my favorite mechanic, first thing he said to me was that I should be prepared to buy a lot of oil. He was right.. Just do a search for "1.8 TSI oil consumption". These engines are well known for that problem.

I think mine is on the way out, excessive oil consumption at 92000 miles. I had a fresh oil change and in 1600 miles went through 2 quarts of oil, no leaks, and good compression. Mine is a 2014 1.8t Se and I change my oil every 5000 miles instead of the 10000 miles they say I can go. I have tried numerous oils and it's the same consumption. My car doesn't pour black smoke out the exhaust and no misfires, so I have no clue what is happening to my oil. Luckily it is almost paid off and I def won't be buying another, just hope it lasts another 8 months. I only drive this car on the weekends so about 2-250 miles a week tops.

got the same engine, just give it a thrash up the motorway or highway above 3000 rpm for a good hour or so drive it will reduce oil consumption it has on mine just gone past 87k only needs 250ml every 1000 mile now as appose to 500ml before. These engines need to be ran hard to get the linkages and cams lubed properly else they can get gunked up and cause excess consumption. I wouldnt recommend flushing this car as it can degrade seals and can cause major leaks etc.

For anyone else who has this issue, change the PCV valve. That causes oil consumption. These engines are not known for burning oil. Mine at 130k doesn’t burn or leak a drop between 4k changes.

I had the Epc light come on at 60k about three times but disappeared after turning it off and turning it back on. I’m at 90k miles now Idk If should be worried or not but it hasn’t come back up ever since 😳

Potentially the dealership who performed the oil change and work prior to failure. I'm not sure how difficult it would be to go directly after VW in the same capacity, it's possible but maybe a bit more difficult.

My 2018 VW Atlas failed ENGINE, service at dealership won't provide what is wrong with it ( only sparks and few misfires) and they want 20,000.Outside of warranty VW USA refuse to help at all.Anyone can suggest what should I do?

If the motor is still in the car you should be able to compression test the block; getting a used motor from a junkyard will save you a lot of money if that is what's needed. Used motors run about 2.5k shipped to your house. That quote of 20k is criminal, if you know anyone with an engine hoist and feel comfortable swapping the motor this is your lost cost effective route imo. How far out of warranty are you concerning time or mileage?

Will try to look at the old Engine,after they will remove it, possible manufacture defect ( sparks burned very bad - without any couse.When we were towing car from dealership service,one guy run to us at the last minute and gave us those burned ones,original and said he was the one who pulled them out. They replace 1.8 tsi with 1.4 tsi both with 160hp. I got that 1.4 tsi with 160ps not a single problem for 4 years. I wanted to avoid that bad series so i take 1.4 with 160

i used 1 liter of oil every week, arround 350-400 kilometers hahaha only highway kilometers... insane oil usage... its for engine overhaul/revision and dsg full service at the garage now... as part of the warranty i bought with it. garage owner wasnt happy but he said; ill take care of it, its my fault i didnt gave it a revision before selling it... wont cost me anything. but if u buy this engine, and u start noticing oil usage, better sell it as soon as possible cause fixing this will cost u like 2000euro 3000euro easy

I have 2015 Golf with this same engine and it have been very problematic. I've had oil leaks, coolant leaks, ATF leaks, water pump failure, a/c failure, transmission errors, busted engine mounts, premature shock absorber failure, random rough idles and an oil pressure issue that no one knows how to fix. All of this would be ok if the car had 200,000 miles, but it only has a little over 70,000.

Timing chains are designed to last the life of the motor typically; unless you're hearing chain slap it's something you shouldn't have to touch. Typically the guides/tensioner will fail before the chain itself. However if an overhaul is being done to the motor such as a new head gasket, it may be a good time to refresh the chain, tensioner, and guides since it's apart already.

This was when i brought in my golf for warranty because of the leaking thermostat housing...i cant believe this is not a recall. I had to use my extended warranty to fix this so they keep all the money now: if you dont have claims you get back 1500 from extended warranty that cost me 2200-2600 aprox CAD. Vw really let me down with the mk7, I think this will be my last vw ever. Windshield cracked on its own, visor plastic broke off when i put envolope into clip. So i need a new visor now. Third brake light leaking and dripping over rear window and leaving calcium build up. Brake rotors were warped at brand new 0 km. When i go over bumps sometimes I get a creaking sound. Like what a disaster. Too much fragile plastics on the engine, quality really went down. Manual transmission gears are way too long and clutch feels like crap...etc i wouldnt recomend buying one.
