All these manufacturers going for infotainment control versus physical buttons is disgusting. If I use my mobile phone while driving I can potentially lose my driver's license, and rightfully so. But if I want to change the inside temperature I must look at the infotainment screen. What is the difference? Absolutely absurd, and so utterly disappointing, considering the combined experience of all the designers and executives at the top levels of car companies approving and pushing for this Absolutely obvious wrong direction.

Seriously. I thought the fad would end with Tesla sales slowing, but no.. I think manufacturers caught on that they can cut cost not manufacturing buttons and dials and instead use these cheaply available standard LCD screens. Until regulations come in to stop them they will continue making these built-in driver distraction units.

…I recently test drove the new Duster and although I definitely like Dacia a lot as they became the real Volkswagen for the normal people, It needs to be said that a Golf MK8 isn’t only a lot more expensive, it is also light years better in any aspect I can probably think of…. Quality, comfort, materials, craftsmanship, sound insulation, suspension, specs, equipment, etc… again, it’s expensive but once driving it, the price also shows!

picked up my 2nd mk8 Variant last week, preFL, 1.5 etsi 130hp dsg, had a 2022 1.0tsi manual (covid era, lead time for dsg was 12months+, manuals were on the lot), the etsi surprised me. I have 1.5tsi in karoq that is disengaging to neutral when you lift-off, and I thought e-tsi would do the same but will just help to keep the rolling speed longer, but it shuts of the engine and it keeps you rolling for surprisingly long distance. On parking lots it kept me at 18kmh for a full circle till I found a free spot, it is really like driving a hybrid, which has its negatives too of course, the brake pedal is completely different than on base TSI engines without the mhev, most of the time you feel like your brakes failed, you have to really press it all the way down, you also have to learn to brake earlier and generally switch your mindset to a hybrid driving, I don't know the capacity of the small battery, but it is shutting off the engine... a lot more often than I would expect it for a mhev, If they would come with this technology 15 years ago when they first started putting start-stop in cars, killing 12v batteries and starters, people would not mind it that much. But im glad you can put on coolant and oil temperature to be shown in display, so I generally keep the dsg in sport mode until the oil is at least at 80C, otherwise on short drive, even 30km, in summer, your engine may take a long time to cross 90C, and oil temperature generally in modern engines runs ideally at 95-100C, I like the eTSI, I don't like comparing manuals and automatic, I do tend to rev the engine much higher than automatic would, basically like if the dsg would be in sport mode all the time, but my average consumption on 1.0tsi 200nm 110hp manual was 5.7-6.1, on all-season tyres, on this 1.5 etsi 130hp 200Nm it's 5.1. I don't really care about the consumption, I reckon other drivers would get bigger differnce, but I like that now I don't mind start/stop to be left alone, that I produce less noise in the city, does not really make a difference in the cabin, below 90kmh you don't really know if the engine is running or not, I have to keep the rpm gauge on to actually know if the engine is shut off or not. It makes me want to buy a hybrid next time, which is weird for me to even think about it.

Super gorgeous rear lights with that shadowing effect. Would love a car with a "bad roads" feature; here in California are roads are pretty bad now; not as bad as Brasil but definitely way worse than 10 years ago. Thin tires are a recipe for a cracked rim. Sadly, we only get the Golf R and GTI in the USA, when the plain Golf would be a much more practical product. And of course we aren't allowed to have the economical Diesel version; after the scandal VW will never import a diesel again. And of course we aren't allowed to have the more reliable manual transmission version. If you want your car to go 500k miles, a manual transmission is the best way to go. And of course we don't get the Estate (wagon) version. the US gets screwed over and over by the foreign car companies who only send us their most expensive, largest, vehicles. So we just drool over Hilux and mini Asian trucks, and the practical cars that are so abundant in Europe. So we are left with 48k avg price SUV's.

From price, this mid trim competes with Tesla Model 3. Which one would you suggest?
I’ve owned a mark v, vi and vii Golf. They were excellent cars. Just bought a BMW 1 Series. The infotainment screen is small and controlled by touch or a selector wheel which is far better and safer to use on the move. I don’t like big screens that look like an afterthought. I agree that the new Golf is too expensive.

VW Golf 7 won the Car of the Year with a whopping 400+ points from the jury (highest ever points if I'm not wrong). I've Golf 7. It would be very interesting if you could compare Golf 7 versus Golf 8 Facelift. For example, comparing driving comfort, noise insulation, etc.

I just upgraded from mk7 1.4tsi to mk8 1.5tsi. The mk8 is much louder, both road noise and engine. Also, there is more vibration and a less settled ride. Steering is more responsive, though.

1.5 tsi mhev With dsg? 1.5 tsi with manual?
@e72344 ай бұрын
yes. The mild hybrid push system is build inside the gearbox. That is the reason that dsg gets mild hybrid but the manual does not. In the case of Ford Focus and Mazda the mild hybrid electric motor is attached to the crankshaft by pulleys so it always comes with it.

Once again asking VW to bring the Golf back to Canada. The Taos doesn't even come close, and not everyone can afford or wants to spend on a GTI! We're not the USA, we love hatchbacks and wagons still, albeit less than we used to. The Golf used to fill that spot for a practical car that's more than basic transport, but not quite into luxury or performance. Now there's just a void here. This Mk8 refresh, especially the hybrid looks like it would fill in nicely.

It is quite a step up in silence from the previous generation anyway. Comparing prefacelift.

VW and Audi do the best exterior lighting signature. This Golf however seems quite noisy. VW dont use double door seals on the front doors on the Golf and Polo.

Such fun to see a manual shift again. This is a highly evolved dinosaur which has about five years left till extinction as an ICE. It is hopeful that VW have managed more proper buttons for the UI/UX but I am not convinced about the software. The rest of the engineering and practicality looks great. At €44k it is not cheap.

The MK8.5 TSI and base models will probably be the last Golfs to offer a manual as the manual has been now axed from the gti and r (in europe). I got a used Mk7.5 GTI recently and I kid you not there were 80 automatics with under 50k kilometers and only 2 manuals on offer in my country. You would be surprised by how few manual performance orientated cars there are in Europe produced in the last 5 years.
@PaulMeier-cu3dsАй бұрын
@@Superbustr I suppose manual gearboxes are another casualty of the move to EVs. I cannot see anyone in the supply chain wanting to put money into developing them further. With EVs even paddles are usually for regen levels, so paddle shifts are on the way out too.

About 10-12 years ago, a BMW 335i with a twin-turbo 3-liter engine cost 41.850 euros, or 44.000 if you added the M-Sport package. A new Golf for that price is simply bad value. Gone are the days when customers got great value on their money.
@josefv-y8m4 ай бұрын
And a BMW of this Power is now at 100k today. If you add the Inflation year by year for the 12 Years, you will easily end at this price of the Golf...and you never got something like a Travel Assist, which I love.

At least in Finland it fell from top spot in registrations to below #20 with this generation. I don't know about everywhere else in Europe, but I doubt these relatively small updates can help it cover the ground the Golf has lost to all the other brands and models.

What is wrong with all car manufacturers these days 20 -30 years ago you can buy a golf or Corolla and use as family car , rear seats used to have as much room as Passat but now all hatchbacks are simply two + mini two That’s insanely stupid or purposely made to push buyers for more expensive suv type cars And these huge screens , unnecessary clutter
