How to replace a crank sensor on a TFSI engine, this one is attached to a Volkswagen Golf Mk5 GTi but will be the same process for all TFSI 2.0 engines in the same platform like Audi A3, TT, S3 or Skoda Octavia, Seat Leon Cupra / Cupra R
Fault:
speedo and rev counter sudden drop and reset
failure to start
Fault code:
P0321 - 008 (G28 Sensor) implausible signal

Jack and axle stand
flat head screwdriver
7, 8 and 10mm 1/4 inch sockets etc

Mine died while driving on the freeway now I have no crank at all it just electronically powers up , should I dabble into my cps as well ?

That does sound like a potential cps fault as thats what mine would do, power up but not crank

No idea if you’ll see this but have an issue on my mk5 its a fully built car running silly power i do race it as well the weekend i was driving it did a few hard pulls nothing new car ran perfectly since then cars been parked past 2/3days come out to drive it started fine drove ok until i come to go on boost starting juddering and also most like a miss fire backed off the pedal and it drove fine off boost i did plug it in and it did bring up a P0321 code would that be my crank sensor? I know have a crank position sensor and crank speed sensor on these

It could be, but my initial thoughts are a coil pack as my old 20v would do this as in drive fine until it was on boost. Clear the fault codes and drive it again and then re check codes? Do you have a management light illuminated

@@GreyGooseRestorationsengine light was on when the p0321 come on the car i plugged it in it ran one code before but I forgot what it was cleaned it off drove it again thats when the p0321 came on iv cleaned that off and continued to do it

Does it goes to limp mode/rpm cut down & won't accelerate when it occur?

No limp mode but it cuts revs and the rev counter drops to zero and a dead throttle, then it wakes up again and was fine for a while

Thats quite common to do that when its hot / had time for the heat to soak into the sensor, had the same on BMW X5 E53 3.0d, would only do it once warm

Everything was fine when it was 40°, by the time it was 65°, it started bugging out, timing and everything is fine considering I rebuilt the head. I bought a genuine one instead of a generic, hopefully that'll fix the problem during warmer days

Heat soaks into the electrical parts and its causes high resistance resulting in the faults

Recently got one with crank no start. Would it make much difference if someone had been using E10 fuel .not E 5 ?

I don't think so, i used my Mk5 on E10 since it changed over and for 30 off thousand miles with no adverse effects.

Before you changed your crankshaft sensor, did you have P0341 code, when trying to start the car? Asking cause my mk5 gti has the same issue and idk whether it's the crankshaft sensor, or if I just need a new starter.

Hi Thanks for the video , I just wanna ask is the crank sensor is same with speed sensor becsuee I have similar issue just the transmission shifting to the first speed when that happen and showing VSS speed sensor error when I check it , so I can’t find the speed sensor only I found the crank sensor same you and there is people or garage saying the VSS speed sensor in transmission valve body My car VW GTI 2009 2.0 turbo automatic transmission, thanks and waiting your kind reply

Fault code P0501

Speed sensor will be slightly different as the transmission will have a input and output speed sensor so its more that likely the fault is within the transmission

Had this problem with my Mk5 Golf 2.0 TDi automatic. Cost me over 200 quid. Apparently they had to remove the gearbox to get to it? 🤷‍♂

Thats suspicious, its awkward but not to the point of gearbox off depending where its located on the tdi

It could well be crank sensor then, its the heat soak from the engine into the aged sensor, soon as the ecu picks up any missed signal from the crank sensor it'll shut down

I bought cheap crank position sensor 15$ Amazon ....sensor lasted 4 months an started stalling again ...I recommend Bosch cheap one left me stranded

Bosch was my first choice but best one available was hella, would have been £172 but got 60% discount off that 😁 see how it goes, hella have been making electronic parts for years so im confident itll do the job

I have the same problem no Spark to plugs , would this cause no spark ?

Yes, the engine doesn't know where its at so will stop fuel and spark

Once warm and after a long good drive it wouldn't start again, heat soak causing the sensor fail, gave the sensor wiring a wiggle around and it would fire up and be fine for a few days.
