VW Golf MK7.5 DQ381 7 Speed DSG Service

In today's video we have a Golf R Mk7.5 in for a 7 Speed DSG service, this car in particular has the 7 speed DQ381 DSG Gearbox. In this video, we change the DSG oil and the DSG oil filter. This one also came in for an uprated millers oil 5w40 nanodrive oil change and genuine oil filter (we didn't show engine service on video)

Manual states to set the level with the overflow pipe 2 turns out, once set screw back in and fit drain plug with new washer.

And I'm guessing you dropped the overflow plug by two turns and cycled through the gears to fully distribute the new oil off camara, right? 🤠

As another filling alternative, can I fill the transmission oil over the top of the oil filter opening with a funnel?

Hey JCR, great video, I have a Cupra 290 (2019) with the same drivetrain as this including the DQ381 and as you mentioned there is very little online about servicing the 7 speed, so this has been really helpful as I'm at 44k so it needs doing! Will defo be hiring a ramp for it though! Looking forward to future vids.

Basic setting is not needed, the transmission is continuously learning about the status of the clutches and solenoid valves while you are driving the car.

Thanks for video. Did you unscrew the overflow thingy for about two turns like it says in the vw manual. Aren’t you worried that your gearbox is a bit overfilled now? I’ve seen videos where they unscrew it and then wait until the excess oil kind of gushes out every 30 seconds. I’ve read that vw/skoda/seat has had underfilled dq381 gearboxes from the factory. Have you heard of this?

My golf DSG7 was broken at 130000km, I changed it then again it was broken at 207000km 😢. Knowing that I didn't make serive for the new gearbox since the first repair

Thanks for the sub! The gearbox took around 6.5 litres before getting up to temp and allowing the excess to drain and the engine takes around 5.7 litres

Good video. Just also add that when setting the level, the red plug needs to be finger tight and then unscrewed 2 full turns. Then run up to temp and let the excess drain. When it stops flowing, tighten the red plug back in and then fit the sump drain plug.

Does this method (or DQ381 gearbox) allow to empty gearbox completely or does some old oil remains in the unit? Was this design changed from previous/6-speed DSGs to be able to drain it completely without flush changing the oil?

It always has some fluid left in the mechatronics just as the old DQ500 and DQ250. It is not possible to drain fluid from the mechatronic unit unless you remove it from the transmission. If you would like to change the fluid completely(though nonsense), change the fluid twice.

I managed to find it in the end, I chewed the thread on mine a bit so I’ll get a new mech drain plug next time I do it. Out of curiosity are you able to comment on what condition the oil has been in on these model of DSG7 gearboxes when changed at 40k in comparison to the predecessor DSG6 at the same mileage.

We can't say scientifically, but in both models the oil looks significantly darker than the new oil we put back in. In terms of comparing the 6 to the 7, we can't tell enough difference to compare

The car manufacturer says the service of the DSG DQ381 is necessary on every 120 000km, but I will change mine on 85 000 next week.

DQ381 with G 055 529 A2 initial filled DCTF has an interval of 120,000 km, while DQ381 with G 052 182 A2 as initial filling should change oil at every 60,000 km, however you will never see the latter variants, they do not exist in your market.

I did my fluid change under the impression i had the 6spd box, knew my car was 7spd but didnt know that the procedure was different also didnt know that there even was a 6spd so when finding procedure i assumed they were showing me the 7spd. I never opened the 2nd plug you showed, only the bottom one. Drained. Filled 5.8-6ish L of fluid (little spillage ) and then got up to temp 38C. Let drain until bubble/drip. Am i running on too much oil? Is there any risk? Should i double back and redo my fluid change? Thanks for any advice.

As long as after you filled the oil up, you let it drain until it trickled out as you mentioned you will be fine as that keeps the level correct for the whole box. Worst case you may have a slight bit of old oil left (the oil that would of drained out of the mechatronic drain plug) mixing with the new oil but I'm sure it will be fine until next time you service the gearbox

The pre facelift clubsport car is the 6 speed (DQ250) and the TCR is a facelift so uses the 7 speed (DQ381 shown in this video)

I think it could be done on 4 axle stands as long as they give the car a decent height but would be much much easier on a ramp

DQ381 is in R, Gti, 2.0 tdi 110kw and GTD. In 1.5 tsi 110kw is DQ200

It is 80,000 miles for DQ381 with G 055 529 A2. However it is 40,000 miles for DL382 with the exact same transmission fluid.

thats too little. They cant "check it" there is no checking it. Once the nuts done up with the wrong about of oil. There is no checking. My advice is get it done properly or else its a 6k bill for a new one.
